The English Grill at Brown Hotel Ratings and Reviews
Went to the English Grill for a night on the town before Actors Theatre. I'd always wanted to try an authentic Hot Brown at (where else?) The Brown Hotel. The wait staff was truly professional and very helpful. The wine list and bourbon list are extensive, our waiter's recommendation of a sauvignon blanc wine to pair with the turkey hot brown was perfect. The farmer's salad was fresh and crisp, just the right size. The hot brown arrived in a huge ceramic dish, with giant bacon strips across the top. It was fantastic, the portion size is large so count on getting a to-go box. We did not sample the dessert menu but it had many choices. Not a cheap restaurant--2 entrees, 2 salads, 2 glasses of wine was $101 and we left a $22 tip. However...you get what you pay for in the best service, fantastic food with large portion sizes, and a very upscale experience. The staff is very polite and engaging, quite knowledgeable about events and things to do in downtown and also they offer free valet parking with dinner reservations. Overall a true 5-star experience, will definitely visit again. For those coming from out of town, the Hot Brown is the signature dish of the Louisville Metro area and it was invented right here...it's worth the drive!
For our 8th year in a row we had dinner at the English Grille and as usual it was an outstanding experience. The food, ambience and service for all wonderful and made it a great experience! The staff alone makes the meal worth it, they sure that everything is perfect for your dining experience.
The restaurant is great no matter when you visit but for a holiday it even surpasses its normal level of service.
Took son and grandson to the English Grill for Thanksgiving. The guys were pleased with the beef tenderloin and I was pleased with the turkey. Dressing was very tasty, but dry. I would have preferred to have had the salads, deserts presented at the table. Otherwise very good dinner.
We came here for thanksgiving and it was the best time ever. Will come back every year.
They treat you like you’re a celebrity....the food couldn’t be better. Apps were a buffet with everything from cracked crab and oysters on the half shell to mini hot browns. The Main was off menu....dessert an incredible buffet. Just delightful. Valet parking was a nice perk.
Kelly was outstanding at our table, he was very entertaining and knowledgeable. He was also very kind to my son, whose 5, which meant a great deal to me. Thanksgiving at The Brown, and The English Grill, is beautiful and unforgettable. It’s a very special place, especially during the holiday time of year.
We enjoyed an excellent meal at the English Grill. The service, by George, was terrific, and the food was very good, although my wife was not totally impressed by the Hot Brown. We found it especially nice that the restaurant kept our leftovers in their refrigerator while we attended a show at the Brown Theater. We'll be back.
We had a group of 8 and were set in a privat room across from the main dining room. The atmosphere was beautiful and we could hear the player piano out in the bar area which added to the elegant ambiance.
Menu options are limited & were different than the menu online (not an issue for our group). The wine list was extensive with the average price per bottle around $50. We tried all of the appetizers: the gnocchi was quite good, the others were fine, all were nice sized portions. The main courses were truly delicious! The steak & duck were my favorites. Desert was also delicious (the highlight was the warm and seasonally spiced bread pudding).
Our server was excellent and ever present in one area of the room or another. He was nearly invisible when not making sure glasses were never empty and plates were quietly removed as they were emptied. It was wonderful to never have to flag down a waiter.
This was my first time eating at the English Grill even though I lived in Kentuckiana for 24 years. My wife and I ate there for our anniversary before going to see a show at the Palace. George was our server and he was incredible. Harold brought food to the table and stopped by to check on us. They were both amazing people and had fantastic stories about the Brown, English Grill, Louisville, and life in general. The manager was very nice and wished us a happy anniversary on multiple occasions. The whole experience was terrific. We had the crab cake appetizer and they were delicious. Of course we both had the Hot Brown for our main course and it was nothing short of amazing. The most perfect comfort food imaginable. Our dessert was a chocolate mousse cake with a chocolate cup on top filled with rum that George lit on fire and the chocolate draped around the cake. One of the coolest things I've ever seen for a dessert. No doubt I would recommend both the English Grill and the Brown Hotel to friends. Everyone made it a wonderful anniversary weekend!!
When in Louisville, we always make this the highlight of our trip with friends. The service and food was spectacular. The wine list offered a variety of choices and prices. We started out with a Caesar Salad for the table of 6. Everyone raved about its taste. It incorporates a brown mustard sauce that adds a distinctive taste to the salad making it probably the best Caesar Salad the six of us said we ever tasted. The salmon was moist and melted in your mouth. Others had the halibut, scallops and The Hot Brown, an epicurean turkey delight (enough food for two hearty eaters). I can't even begin to describe the desert but I will try. It is a decadent chocolate that has a liquor in the center that is lit at the table causing the surrounding chocolate to melt into the center crater. If you are a chocolate lover, Don't miss this desert.
The English Grill Manager, J. Troy Ritchie remembered us from our previous visits and stopped by the table to assure everything was perfect. I can't forget our waitress who made this one of our most enjoyable dining experiences.
Excellent food and ambience. Located in the Brown Hotel, a wonderful classic hotel in downtown Louisville. II would have rated it excellent overall except the some of the wait staff later in the evening got very loud and was distracting as we discussed business.
We were greeted by Jennifer the hostess who showed us to our table. She was so kind and friendly. Our serve was Justine. She was absolutely amazing. We ordered cocktails (recommend the Ali's Smash) and for dinner had the Caesar Salad for two prepared at our table by the wonderful Kim Ellen. I don't think I will be able to have another Caesar salad unless it is prepared this way...to die for. I, of course, ordered the hot brown and my boyfriend ordered the salmon. These dishes we exceptional! Also really loved how all the staff came to check on everyone and helped each other out, even the manager was so helpful and tentative. We will definitely be back and maybe next time we will have enough room for dessert 😁
The English Grill did an excellent job Saturday night providing me with a perfect romantic setting for a romantic evening with my now Fiance. They helped out engagement go smoothly and provided extra commodities for the occasion. The food was excellent, the atmosphere was perfect, and the staff were incredible.
The signature dish of the English Grill is suppose to be the Hot Brown. So, I ordered it. A terrible decision on my part. It was the worst Hot Brown I have ever had. It appeared to have been seating under a heat lamp for way too long. The toast was totally mush. The Mornay sauce was not even recognizable. In addition to being burned from sitting under a heat lamp, it was the consistency of poorly prepared instant oatmeal. The bacon was also over-cooked probably due to the heat lamp treatment. The service was as poor as the food despite only three other tables with customers. The whole experience was extremely disappointing!!
The restaurant was not busy. It took over 20 minutes to get our drinks after we ordered them. The waitress, Karen, was not attentive. Our food took forever! We ordered two sides of fries. She brought three. The fries were the more expensive kind. I guess there is a few dollar difference if they put seasoning on the fries! When she brought the bill, I told her about the extra order of fries, which we didn't even eat. She said that she would take it off our tab, but didn't. I was done and wanted to leave, so I paid the $10 for the fries. The food was delicious. We all had Hot Browns. The restaurant and hotel were beautiful.
We went for our 25th anniversary celebration. They brought my meal out and completely forgot my husband's meal . The manager did come over but offered no solution except to prepare another meal for him. He didn't even offer an apology. It really was inexcusable. Our meal was excellent but the service was terrible especially for a $150.
