Service and attention to detail outstanding.
One of the best places in the city of Louisville that have a wonderful dining experience!
It was our first time at the English Grill and it was outstanding. The room, the maître d', our server and the food from a wonderful chef made for a fantastic birthday dinner. It is just a great experience!
Wonderful food and drinks. Our server had fun and informative historical ditties about The Brown Hotel and that made our evening very enjoyable!
Outstanding, food, service, and ambiance!
They pay very close attention to details and make sure you are completely satisfied with everything. Their timing on dishes was on point! Highly recommended!
Very nice, old but fancy atmosphere. The food and drinks were great. I highly recommend for a celebration or just a nice date night out. I also recommend getting reservations. When a show is going on, it tends to get crowded.
The staff were amazing! The brown entree I ordered was burnt around the edges. Ambience was great!
Had great service but food was just ok. A little pricey for the quality of food. Was not crowded but took awhile for food to be served.
We had a 5:45p reservation and were planning to attend a show next door at 7:30p. Our food arrived at 7:20p. We spent a fortune for a 10 min meal and much stress plus we were late for the show. The food was delicious but the service in the kitchen sorely lacking. VERY disappointing. Won’t be back. There were 10 of us.
My wife and I have been needing a nice dinner out.
Kelly who served us made us feel so relaxed and took wonderful care of us. He worked with the magnificent chef who prepared everything for my wife completely dairy free! The meal was outstanding and meant the world to us!
Elegant restaurant. Service was absolutely excellent. The Brown Sandwich was excellent and my filet was cooked to perfection. The tables were spaced so you didn't feel like you were eating with your neighboring tables! It's the little things that make it special: no cell phones, coat check, dress code that make it a special evening.
A wonderful experience with a wait staff that not only were on top of everything, but also offered stories of the past from the hotel to the bar; and famous people that stayed and played there. Totally love this place. Also, great antiques!!!
The service was truly outstanding!
Food was well prepared and reasonably priced. Our entire group was very satisfied with the quality. The highlight of the evening was our server, Rob. Rob was a wealth of knowledge regarding the English Grill, the Brown Hotel and the surrounding area. Rob was very attentive and would request his service again.
My husband and I decided to go to the English Grill for our anniversary. OpenTable suggested it was romantic. It was very nice we love historical places so we enjoyed the decor and wood work but I would not describe the ambiance as romantic. The lighting felt very bright and several tables around us were loud. Beyond the lack of romance the food was fabulous! The services was good but could have been a little more attentive.
It was our first visit to the English Grill. Everyone was wonderful from the manager to the person refilling the water glasses. Our waiter, Kelly, was excellent and we enjoyed having him serve us. The food was delicious and presented beautifully. It was a late Valentine's celebration for us so we were given a Chocolate Dessert that was set aflame at our table. It was great. We will be back to this lovely place.
We had a wonderful experience here. I was pleasantly surprised at the value considering this is a 5 diamond restaurant. Entrees for 2 people and 3 adult beverages made it $50/piece. The duck and the salmon were cooked perfectly and all of the flavors were amazing. The service was excellent, we never needed for anything. We will be back.
Really good food, special menu for Valentine's day, fun and delicious! The ice sculpture and champagne/"love potion" was a sweet touch. Yasir is the best waiter! (hope I am spelling his name correctly)
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our dinner date. The ambiance and staff were delightful and our meals were absolutely delicious. We will most definitely returning.
Enjoyed our Valentine's dinner at the English Grill. The food was excellent, and the wait staff was attentive.
Everything was exceptional for this special occasion.
It’s hard to review this because we never ended up eating here. I made these reservations online several weeks ago for me and my boyfriend on Valentine’s Day. Needless to say I picked the restaurant because it looked classy from the images and the menu items I saw. I truly had my heart set on their roast duck and creme brûlée for dessert. I live in Washington, DC and flew here to Louisville so that we could have a romantic week/end together.
Anyway, we went through the restaurant website that redirected us to OpenTable to make our reservations. When we got there we were super excited to order and begin our first V-Day together. And then I glanced down at my plate and saw a neatly folded, decorated card and no signs of a full menu. I knew what it meant before I even opened it, and to my utter disappointment, I was confirmed in my assumption: a pre fixe menu (basically, they only have one option. You don’t get to pick your meal - they have picked it for you and do not allow any alterations or substitutions. You’re stuck with whatever the chef came up with for that night). My heart literally dropped. It wouldn’t have come as such a blow if we’d known this in advance. But the restaurant had been advertising their FULL MENU everywhere!! There was no ad or notice warning patrons that there would be a fixed menu that night as is customary when serving pre fixe for obvious reasons). My boyfriend was prepared for the cost of dining at this particular restaurant, but he also wasn’t willing to pay $100/plate for food we barely wanted - certainly nothing I had had my heart set on for weeks. Ugh, it was so disappointing it was crushing. Evening totally ruined. Our reservations were for 9:45pm, so by the time we realized this discrepancy and began looking for an alternative, almost everything else within reach was closing or not accepting walk-ins.
So they get one star for effectively ruining my first Valentine’s Day with my boyfriend with false advertisement.
This is the second time my wife and I have gone to the English Grill. The food was excellent as always, the chef never disappoints. Our only issue was Kelly our waiter who wasn't very attentive, my wife has a food allergy and Kelly never explained what was on the menu. At the end of the meal we were waiting to be offered coffee because I really enjoy their coffee but that didn't happen and we had to wait 20 minutes for Kelly to bring us our check. One of the highlights of the night, besides the food, was talking to Arnold. He was very personable and told us about some of the history of the establishment which was nice. We are unsure if we will return to the English Grill, the amount you pay for your meals you expect premium service.
Valentines Day dinner was a lovely experience. We LOVE the Lobby Bar but was able to plan ahead and get dinner reservations in the English Grill. Valet parking was backed up-the gentleman was not the most welcoming or gracious upon our departure....it was even a dry and reasonably mild night. We must have been a bit early and had to wait to be greated/seated in the restaurant. The restaurant is traditional, gorgeous and clean. The pre fixed menu was delicious. Portions huge and we couldn’t eat it all.... had to box it-even dessert-and that ruined the experience. Love Potion #9 was a delightful touch but I believe the staff was still training...our server was excellent. The pace was rather quick and again portions were huge. Great experience but not our favorite experience.
Our experience was exceptional! We had a fantastic time! The service was over the top! The food was out of this world great! There was four of us and we all loved everything!
Thanks so much!
I took my husband to The English Grill for his big birthday because I wanted a special dinner in an elegant restaurant with the best food and service in Louisville. I also wanted an iconically Louisville experience, since he was born there and we now live in Atlanta. It was beyond my expectations! The food and service and surroundings were perfect and he was so pleased! Thank you!!
An elegant restaurant inside a historic hotel. We enjoyed the extraordinary service, the ambiance and the delicious food.
Service was impeccable. The food was excellent. The majority of our group had the Hot Brown and loved it. The table side Caesar salad was not only delicious but it was a treat to watch the preparation. I had the pork rib chop and it was perfect, the bacon braised collard greens were delicious. For dessert, the chocolate strip tease and the blood orange sorbet, incredible! We had a fabulous birthday celebration for my best friend. Thank you English Grill!
Wonderful Birthday experience and excellent friendly staff with a beautiful ambiance and amazing food.
Waiter and server were great. Friendly people, great atmosphere and great food.
The Hotel is a Classic and lovely. Had a wonderful Manhattan at the Lobby Bar prior to dinner with
live piano music in the background. AWESOME!!!!
While the English Grill is a bit tired it is a beautiful background and unlike newer restaurant is quiet enough to have a conversation.
Our group had a diverse choice of entrees however the HOT BROWN is why I came here and was NOT disappointed!!!!!
Our server was excellent and has been at the Grill for many years.
This place should be on the HIT LIST for anyone visiting Louisville!
Excellent Hot Brown and Salmon!
Atmosphere and Service very good.
It was awesome. My daughter and my 7 year old granddaughter thought it was out of this world. First time for both.
A must place to go in Louisville..
I went to the Brown Hotel to try the legendary Hot Brown dish. The dish lives up to the legend; it was delicious. I was in Louisville for work, and a cold January, the dish was perfect. I was traveling by myself, and I appreciated how the staff would come by, talk to me, and tell my stories about the history of downtown Louisville. I really enjoyed my experience.
We stayed at the Brown Hotel for a night before going to a matinee show at the Performing Arts Center the next day. When thinking about dinner for the evening, we decided to eat at the English Cafe, the home of the famous Hot Brown. Everyone has told us that it was a must try, and why not get the original? The cost was reasonable for a four-star restaurant and the staff made the meal enjoyable with light conversation without being disruptive.
Great food. Our server, Kelly, was attentive and informative.
The English Grill is without doubt one of the best restaurants we have visited. From the moment you walk in to the moment you leave, the staff make you feel at home. The food is exquisite (including the desserts) and the drinks from the bar are top notch. This is the ideal place for a nice romantic dinner. Highly recommend.
One of my favorite dining experiences in Louisville.
Scallop special fabulous. Excellent wine list.
