About The Emporium
Shortly after the construction of the Jefferson Street Bridge in 1912, Chris Anwonder built the first tavern to grace our building. During the era that followed industry and commerce built upon the banks of the river. Our building has a history that somewhat parallels the economic ups and downs of this area. It has been a porcelain works, tombstone factory, and sign company. Fifteen years prior to the October 1, 1980 opening of our restaurant, it was an empty warehouse. The reconstruction of our building uses artifacts collected from the area, and most of the restored oak pieces have been uniquely located to provide the atmosphere that is the Emporium. The grand staircase, the Deacon"s bench, and the oak doors used as paneling are all from an old church. The antique light fixtures, railings, spindles, and oak columns are authentic and add to the beautiful ambiance and dining experience.

We were seated by the window and there was a constant cold draft. We waited for about 10 minutes before another server brought us waters and another 5 minutes for our server. We ordered immediately. We were promised bread that never arrived. We had the Pumpkin Soup and Emporium salad... both were good. We both ordered meatloaf and it was satisfactory.
In summary I hope we did not catch them at their best.
When we arrived the table was wet [had not been cleaned or dried off] and unstable. Needed to have something put under the leg to stabilize. Food was only fair. Salmon was overcooked and the steak that one of us had was over seasoned. Frankly kind of disappointed. Have had good experiences before but certainly not this time. Probably will not go back. To many other nice places to eat.
The East Bank Emporium's glory days are long gone. The place looks tired and sad and much in need of an update. It appeared that the seats had new cushions but the chairs and tables both need refinishing. The server was nice but it was apparent that she had not been trained on the menu as she was unable to answer the questions we asked. The food was slightly above mediocre. My steak was overdone and one of my forks was dirty. My husband's fish had batter that was too thick making it crunchy on the outside and mushy on the inside and his fries had no seasoning. The iced tea had a "muddy" appearance indicating it was not fresh. It was depressing to be there as I remember how nice it used to be back when I was in college. My family will not return to this restaurant.
We eat there at least once a year for our office birthday celebration. We have been doing this for years. At least 3 members of our group always order the chicken salad pita. It is the reason we keep coming back. However, this year, one member of our group sent back her pita as inedible. She said it was mushy and tasted like paste. The other 3 group members who ordered the pita stated that it was also unusually mushy. The server removed the returned pita from our bill and offered to replace it with something else, but our member did not want anything else. We will be back, but were very disappointed in the meal.
The only bright spot of the meal was the Filet Mignon. Pretty much everything else was unsatisfactory to ordinary, starting with The embarrassingly short wine pour on the two glasses of Sonoma County, CA Cabernet Sauvignon that we ordered. Not only was the pour about 3 ounces, which we brought to the attention of our waiter, who failed to offer to do anything about it, but there was a fair amount of sediment at the bottom of the glass, which indicated any of several possible issues with wine and/or it's storage. Plus the green beans were tasteless and tough. I will not return.
Was a bad night for food at The Emporium...chef charred beyond recognition a Pittsburgh style filet...it was rare in the middle, which was good, but the char was so strong, that's all you could taste. Everyone's steaks were well-done and we ordered one of them medium and another one medium rare. There was NO pink in the medium rare. The coffee rubbed ribeye was okay, a little overdone but the person had ordered it with just a slight pink center. Waitress very friendly, and knowledgeable of some things, but not everything for sure. Garlic mashed potatoes tasted like anything but mashed potatoes. Tasted like boxed something with no savory potato flavor. Red pepper potatoes were awful as well. Waitress overheard us discussing the "mess" and offered to send steaks back but honestly, our get together with guests from Dallas TX we had not seen in a long time, stayed the focus of our dinner. It would have even more frustrating to sit and wait while they screwed things up a second time. That's the importance of getting it right the first time. I will say, the Brie appetizer was AMAZING and the green beans were pretty good. Meat and potatoes were really awful. We frequent the restaurant fairly often; but not sure when and if we will return. Longhorn food, where we went the following night, was delicious! Sad.
We dined at 5 PM on a Sunday. The view of the St Joseph River and waterfall was beautiful. Food was great! My husband ordered the Fish n Chips, which cost $13, and came with 2 very large fried loins, a cup of coleslaw, and fries. I ordered a cheeseburger for $11, and it came with a generous portion of fries. We ordered from the classic menu, but they have much more creative food choices on the dinner menu. They serve complimentary rolls, which are delicious. Our waitress was very sweet, and our food arrived within 10 minutes of placing our order. If you are restricted from using a few steps, then I would call ahead and check on their accessibility options as I did not see a ramp to get to the main level of seating, but that's not to say there isn't one, or perhaps dining elsewhere that didn't require the use of steps. On a busy day, there may be a parking issue here. They have limited street parking and a small lot for the restaurant and park that sits along the river. That area of the park has many events such as white water rafting, so I'd imagine parking would be limited if an event was going on (although there are a handful of spaces marked "Emporium Parking Only."
I was pleasantly surprised with everything about the Emporium! The staff was very personable and the food was absolutely incredible. I loved the overall feel of it as well. The menu is a bit high in price, but it is well worth it. I would argue that it is Downtown South Bend's best local restaurant. I will definitely be back soon!
We went for Lunch, our waitress was rarely seen. Our food was not good, the quiche was rock hard. French fries were cold, and when I paid with a gift card, there was no place to put a tip on it. So I went to ask them to take $6 off the gift card for the tip, they took the full $16 that was left on the card, but I didnt find out about that till the next time I went to use it. Very disappointing. Will never return.
This restaurant was easy to find, and the staff were very professional and helpful! There is seating near the river, though the evening I was there it was to cold for such an occasion. The interior wood was incredible and the omniance very inviting. Pricing was reasonable for the evening meal and the quality of food outstanding. Portion sizes adequate. I have recommended this fine establishment to those seeking a quality place to dine.
