It's a shame that such a pretty pub is let down by super miserable staff, boarding on rude. The Sunday lunch was dry and disappointing.

My favourite pub. The food is always cooked to perfection, the menu has great twists on classics using local ingredients. The wine list is extensive with an array of quality wines and a great beer selection too. Interior is very tasteful and the garden is enclosed. A sun trap with space to relax. The staff are always very friendly, attentive and give great recommendations on the food! My family have been here and experienced the brunch, had a coffee, stopped off for a quick drink along with lunch and dinner. Couldn't recommend it more...you must try!

Very good Travelzoo offer. Nicely modernised pub/restaurant but with still keeping the old character of the building. Mentioned that the spinach stack starter was very nice but that both of us found it rather 'gritty'. Not sure what caused that and I had one particular large piece of grit or a small stone in mine, but nothing was said to us about it when I pointed it out when our plates were cleared. We were not told that the sea bass was a £2 supplement until it appeared on the bill. We knew about other supps but this should have been pointed out to us when ordering. Our offer description only mentioned the steak supp. Good that dogs are allowed in the bar area as it is just as nice as the main restaurant. Generally everything else was fine and enjoyed our lunch there.

We both had the Sunday roast 1 beef and 1 pork. It came with roast potatoes which were described as crispy. They were extremely hard! Not crispy at all!! Guessing they were already cooked but then put in the microwave to heat them up!!! We complained about them and to be fair the Manager didn't charge us for either meal just our drinks. We said we would be happy to pay for 1 meal but she insisted she would take both meals off the bill!!

Overall very good. To be picky service was a little slow but by no means a problem and would say a little pricey.

Meal out with friends who wanted to revisit, though myself and husband were reluctant as had eaten here couple lunchtimes in the past and I had also been with friends and had become steadily less pleased with the food.Bit fancy for a lunchtime for us and always left unsatisfied .Soups always lovely though. Anyway starters all round good and pudding-baileys creme brûlée-delicious and easily the best course. Can't fault the service either.Main course-wild mushroom mac n cheese-was lovely but very rich and didn't need the halloumi on the side.Big disappointment was that the dauphinois potatoes were undercooked and had anchovies in!..not expecting fishy potatoes with lamb. This wasn't mentioned on the menu.Funnily enough my husband wanted steak but that came with chips and the waitress said that the chef wouldn't like to be asked to swap chips for dauphinois potatoes as he designs the food combinations with care.So my husband opted for the lamb so that he could have the potatoes!Lamb well cooked but sauce overly salty.Friend politely complained to waitress. No apology or discount forthcoming.Shall definitely not be returning or recommending. And as for the chef having a Michelin star(according to the waitress)..?!..hmm possibly the best kept secret in Essex.Should stay that way.

Always book here when we are flying out of Stanstead, it is 5 minutes away and always delivers on the food, service, wine list ,ambience and is value for money. If you are flying from Stanstead and are on a stop over try it and like us you will find it sets you up for the Hols.

Unfortunately this place has gone downhill and we probably won't return. It's a shame as it used to be great. The dining room lacks any ambience - a table in the bar is much nicer. Staff delivered a bottle of wine to our table and left us to open and pour it ourselves. Some of the starters were tasty and the desserts were nice too but the mains were poor. The southern fried chicken had no flavour whatsoever and looked unappealing as three overcooked brown lumps arrived on a plate; possibly the worst dish I've seen in some time. We used to love it here a few years ago but standards have fallen and there are much better places to eat locally now that offer better value and quality.
