Welcome to The Dorset Arms, one of Sussex's best kept secrets..

The Dorset Arms Public House in Withyham is an 18th century alehouse situated in the outstandingly beautiful Sussex Weald. Part of the historic Buckhurst Estate, the pub is named after the Earls and Dukes of Dorset, one time heads of the Sackville family, and shares a heritage of family ownership now headed by their descendant, the present Earl De La Warr.

Showcasing the best of what Sussex has to offer, our Head Chef has fine-tuned the classics and combined them with modern British dishes to provide a diverse and exciting menu.

Really delicious grilled chicken & fries (me) and local sausages & mash (husband). The trio of small desserts was also lovely. It was a pity there weren’t more people in the pub enjoying a tasty lunch, but those that were there seemed very impressed with the food & friendly service.

Lovely evening at The Dorset Arms. Great food, nice ambience, attentive but relaxed service. Would definitely come back and recommend to friends and family. Only feedback (as someone who likes to know what food options there are in advance), would be to have your current menus on your website, or at least on social media. Thanks for a lovely evening!

Very good, as last month, friendly efficient service, excellent pint of Harvey’s. Wine list looks ok but haven’t tried it. Food was good but a little restricted in choice I felt. Would have awarded 5 stars completely but I had chosen online from the ‘Prix Fixé’ menu at home, only to learn when I got there (May 22) that it had been withdrawn in March!

Great service and amazing food. I had the pea, spinach and mint risotto which was lovely and my boyfriend had the burger which he said is one of the best burgers he's ever had! Only thing I would say is that it would be nice to have some music on as it's deathly quiet but other than that a great pub. And they serve Suntory whisky!

I stumbled across the Dorset Arms while in the area and what caught my eye straight away was the sight of oysters on the menu, not something you expect from a traditional pub tucked away in the middle of Sussex. Naturally, curiosity (and a love of good seafood) led me in. I was genuinely impressed. The Mersey oysters were outstanding, fresh, briny, and as good as any I’ve had. In fact, I usually swear by the oysters at Smiths in Wapping, which are hard to top, but these were right up there. To start, I had the Padron peppers, which were perfectly blistered with just the right touch of salt. For my main, the flat chicken really delivered, juicy, full of flavour, and nicely glazed. If I had to nitpick, the accompanying salad could have used a little more variety, maybe some cherry tomatoes or peppers for a pop of colour and texture. The wine list was a pleasant surprise too. I started with a white that paired beautifully with the oysters, then switched to a rosé that was dangerously easy to drink. The staff were polite, the atmosphere relaxed, and the food far exceeded expectations. If you are anywhere near the area, the Dorset Arms is absolutely worth a visit, especially if you’re an oyster lover. Highly recommended.

Had a wonderful meal with my father and son. Always lovely people serving. Crab cakes good and my father and son’s roast excellent. Love this old pub on the Ashdown forest.
