The Dorrance Ratings and Reviews
This was our second time to visit The Dorrance for dinner. Both times we first had a cocktail at the bar and then had dinner in the restaurant. The cocktails are first rate and the food is really good. The bartenders are very attentive and the overall service at the restaurant is quite good. But coupled with the opulent interior the whole atmosphere is very nice for either a special event or just a fun night out (which was us). My only criticism is that I wish the hostess was actually dressed to match the bartenders, waiters, and the overall interior environment instead of being in jeans.
The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and professional. Thank you Jim. The food was amazing. Creative and fresh with great nuances. Lots of little niceties that are missing in so many other dining establishments. The bar area was hopping. The surroundings are stately and elegant. A great tribute to a long forgotten throw back era. Parking is not a problem since there is a valet curbside. It is apparent that the owner takes great pride in her restaurant and staff. We look forward to returning.
We went here for Restaurant Week so were not ordering off their regular menu. The server was affable, the cocktails nicely made. My friend's soup and chicken dish were delicious, my salad was Ok. My main dish was not great- it was "Gnudi with Duck Carnitas": the gnudi were undercooked and tasted like flour, as were the veggies which were almost raw; you needed a magnfying glass to identify the specks of duck meat. The gingerbread cake barely had any ginger flavor (did they forget to add ginger?) though the scoop of chocolate sorbet was divine with a deep chocolate flavor. The restaurant itself is beautiful with the amazing ceilings and walls of the old 19th century bank that it used to be.
I had really hoped to be wowed by The Dorrance -- the location is so great and they have done such a great job with the interior. However, from the moment we walked in it was a little disappointing. Hostess literally walked away from us when we came in the front door without saying a word. When she finally came back we were seated by being led to the table and a pile of menus set down -- she then simply walked away again really without saying much -- it was quite strange. It was a really cold night and despite there being a coat rack by the hostess station no one made any attempt to take coats and we were left to inelegantly drape them on our chairs. Cocktails were the one bright spot -- lots of care and attention to the menu and bartender offered to create custom cocktails for us as well. We were there during Restaurant week so half of our party ate from the prie fix menu and the others from a la carte. Again -- about half the food was good. Unfortunately the more adventurous menu items seemed to be the least successful. One member of our party has many dietary restrictions and the chef did oblige and her food was clearly carefully prepared which was appreciated. Overall probably not one we would return to for a full dinner but might be a fun spot to grab drinks before eating else where.
It is hard to assess what a true dining experience at the Dorrance would be as my daughter and I were the only diners in the cavernous space which led to a strange, empty feeling. It was the evening after New Year's. The ambiance felt as if they were still cleaning up/clearing out after New Year's--tables moved, a candelabra on a side service table by bar. It was a strange ambiance. My daughter and I are metro New Yorkers and have sophisticated palates--however we found the menu too exotic for our tastes. Almost too over the top at every level. I'd like to try it another time.
We drove from NJ to celebrate an early Christmas with our son so we primarily chose The Dorrance for it's convenient location. What a gem this restaurant is! Beautiful ambiance and creative drinks. I loved the way the caesar salad was finished with homemade parmesan crisps. My husband's butternut squash soup was divine as was our son's cauliflower appetizer. For dinner, two of us smartly chose the fresh lobster tortellini, it was absolutely dreamy and I highly recommend it. Our son ordered the chicken cassoulet which was also outstanding. I will definitely return!
The food and ambiance were excellent.....this may be my new favorite restaurant. You could make this a special occasion or simply pull up a seat at the bar. I feel like it's difficult to find a place with a good bar and cocktails, but The Dorrance has it. We'll definitely be returning!
