A Dutch/Belgian inspired brasserie serving wonderful slow cooked food ( no microwaves in the building!) and a carefully selected selection of over 30 Belgian Beers. The District Ratings and Reviews
We were excited to try District, a new restaurant for us. Our reserved table was ready on time, but as we sat down there were many disappointments. The tables are very close together allowing for little privacy for conversation. We were told promptly that none of the imported beers were available (one of the reasons we wanted to try the restaurant in the first place). Our appies were great, but for our mains both of us had chicken that was dry, old, and inedible. We sent the chicken back. They did remove this from our bill. With one beer each, two appies, and two salads with no protein our bill was $70. Certainly not a good value for the qualities and availability on the menu.
We went for Sunday brunch and sat on the patio, in their newly expanded open air dining space. It was nice to be outside but the stools and table were cheap and uncomfortable.
Our table ordered breakfast bowls all around - big mistake!!
The breakfast bowls were described as a hearty breakfast mix with variety of components. But they were mainly a large quantity of fried potato mini-squares, that looked and tasted like the frozen hash browns you buy can buy at the supermarket. The additional components were less than a tablespoon! We left most of our dishes uneaten, as the potato was bland and a bit greasy. Not sure there is enough ketchup in the world to fix that situation, not that were offered any condiments anyway.
Not going back!
The District makes the North shore a worthy destination by itself. Although this visit had no standout menu items, it has featured great things like milk enriched sausages on a flatbread crust pizza. However, with quality food and efficient friendly service it more that earned the Sea Bus trip.
My husband and I tried the District twice recently, first in mid-July and then again this past weekend.
Our first visit we shared the crab fritters, red curry mussels and the beef short rib. The crab fritters were very tasty, however, not a hint of crab in them, nor do they taste like crab. Think the name is deceiving, but again they were deep fried goodness with a tarragon (tarter sauce) kind of flavour, and not expensive. The mussels took a very long time and we noticed others that had been seated after us were being served their second courses. We asked the waitress to check, we never found out the reason for the delay, however they reduced our bill by 20% to make up for the wait. The red curry mussels with patat friet & grilled bread were delicious! Nothing negative to say about the mussels and the fries served with, PERFECT. However, if you prefer bread with your mussels (my husband does), ask for bread instead of the fries. The short rib dish was disappointing. The short rib was delicious, but the potato gnocchi was terrible. It was hard and chewy, should be fluffy, and melt in your mouth.
We decided to give the district a second try, and this time we had the crab cake, brussel sprouts and the cod burger. The crab cake was nice and served with two tasty sauces spread on the plate. In case you are sharing, note this is one cake. The deep fried Brussel sprouts were a real let down. Unfortunately they were not hot at all, not crispy at all and burnt. We could not eat them. Last, was the cod burger, which was very good. The fish was cooked perfectly and was a good portion for the bun. I had it with fries, which again for me were perfect. I like my fries extra crispy, the District makes the best fries!
The inside of the restaurant could use a good cleaning and maybe some repairs to the seating. I understand the rustic look, but there is rustic and then there is grimy. If you want to sit on the patio, ask for a table with chairs, not stools for more comfort.
The experience was overall good but the service was quite slow considering we got there in plenty of time for the awesome happy hour and were only just getting the order in when the waitress finally came back to us. If you get the mussels go for the red curry over the french.
6 of us with reservations went there for mothers day. 3 of us ordered the same dish - after quite a few minutes we were told there is only one left - so 2 of us had to reorder. Then we ordered a bottle of wine - came back again to tell us not available sold last bottle. So we requested the other Sav Blanc and oh guess what? Out of that too........I have been to this restaurant at least 5 or 6 times and I would say 5 of the 6 times they RAN OUT of food or beverage. Very disappointing -
Great food! Great atmosphere!
Though my husband ordered his drink, for the server to come back about 10 minutes later, to tell him they didn't have it. And then again later on in the night, he ordered another drink to find that they didn't have that either.
And during our dining experience something dripped from the ceiling onto my mom, and they didn't do anything to recover the situations in the moment.
The food was amazing, and that will make us returning customers. But it would have been nice to see some situational recovery for the things that went wrong during our first dining experience there.
There is definitely a good vibe in the district, there is good music playing and the whole place has a good buzz about it. The food was good there is a good cocktail, bear and wine list although it was very busy (Saturday night) and the service suffered a little. We didn't get a drink until our food arrived. Other than that it was a good experience all in all.
The food was very good but the service was not . We had to wait for our server to show up or call her everytime we need something. Also she did not mention they charge gratitude for the party of 6 and more so we ended up paying double tip for the bad service. It was our mistake that we did not check our bill carefully but it was so dark inside to see the bill.. I think their service diminishes their food quality.
The food was pretty good but the overall selection on the menu was pretty unhealthy. We try to eat more or less healthy and we were challenged by that menu. Other than that, the lighting sucks. Too bright. Small tables crammed in. We will probably not go back.
Dine Out Vancouver menu was great and loved the food. Space is cozy and our server was awesome. They tried to seat us at a very small table next to Saturday night DJ but were happy to accommodate our request for a different table. There was another server with her shoes on bar and was sitting and walking around with blistered bear feet - ewww! Visa machine did not work when we went to pay and it was indicated that this is a regular Saturday occurance. The kitchen was open which I liked and it seemed as though the chefs were have a good time. All in all we had a good time and hopefully the hiccups were a one time thing.
The staff was super accommodating to our group as we had a 16 month old with us. 🤗 Our server was Lukas I believe and he was wonderful. Funny. Witty. Awesome with our baby. Happy. Helpful. The food was good. I hadn't been there to eat in a while so the newer menu was great and with more options.
Seated in what seemed to be a private room but soon we shared it with a very loud group. Our server was horrible. Our cocktails were incorrect and had to be sent back (we asked for Moscow miles "but make them with bourbon"). The result was a 15 minute wait for the new ones to be brought. The food is good, but it too forever to get. We ordered a starter of olives and were told "the kitchen is very busy" so it would be a while. This might have been understandable had the very large, loud party at the adjacent table not received their food before us. A fair experience overall.
The District is The House of 'NO'. My friend and I went to the District for dinner. I had made an online Open Table reservation, which the server couldn't find in their computer when I arrived, though I had the confirmation email on my phone. The server led us to a table for 2 in the back of the restaurant squished beside 3 other couples. I asked for the table for 2 by the window instead as it was more private, and was told NO because that table was reserved for someone else who hadn't arrived yet. I told the waitress to give the squishy table to the next couple because we were there first, and we were seated. My friend and I decided on the mini-charcuterie plate which included 1 cheese, 1 meat and condiments. I asked the server what kind of cheese and meat came on the plate, and we were told it was bleu cheese. My friend and I dislike bleu cheese so we asked if we could have some cheddar or parmesan instead. We were told NO, the restaurant didn't have those cheeses and she walked away. When she came back I asked if cheddar came on the burger and was told yes. I asked if parmesan came on the pasta and was told yes. So I asked why we couldn't have cheddar or parmesan in place of blue cheese when clearly the restaurant did indeed have those items. Again, we were told NO. NO substitutions. We didn't end up ordering an appetizer. I ordered the steak and fries as my main course. When my steak arrived, I asked the server if I could have some horseradish on the side and was told NO, we don't have horseradish. A different server came by to fill up our water glasses and I asked him if the bar could make me a Caesar with horseradish and was told yes, that could be done. When our server came back I said that the restaurant did indeed have horseradish behind the bar and could I please have some. I was told NO, that is for the bar only. The District has ok food and atmosphere but the service is ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE.My friend and I will never return to the District for a meal.
Great food but too many items on the menu were not available, including food items from all categories and several Belgian beers (what they used to be known for). Also lacking a few basics... after dinner wines by the glass and mint tea were not available. The savoury food that was available was very good: nice, small and tasty mussels, great fries. Desserts, however, were only so-so.
