The Desert Oasis / The Artichoke Grill Ratings and Reviews
What a hassle finding the restaurant on the rather large and spread out campus of Scottsdale Community College. It caused us to be late for our 6PM reservation, but we then waited till 6:30 to be seated. Physically a very pleasant and luxurious looking ambient with black tablecloths and white dishes and tons of silverware placed all about the service plate. A small basket of fresh warm breads and tiny plate of mini-swirls of soft butter were placed on our table by our student chef-server Taye. She smiled all the time and appeared to be having fun.
We began our 5 course dinner with a surprise palate cleanser that was a single bite of cheese/toast/tomato, so small it was difficult to taste! . Our salmon appetizer was delicious albeit small making me wish it were 3 or 4 times larger, a theme for the rest of our meal. Delicious soup, tepid, not hot, followed, then by our salad which was tasty I think, but certainly needed to be much larger.
My main dish was Veal Marsala, about a 2 1/2 inch piece of veal, some mushrooms and perhaps polenta with a nice sauce, again tasting great but needing to be enlarged at least 3 times! My wife had the Beef Wellington, similar in size to my veal dish, great tasting and leaving you wishing for more. The deserts were large. We chose the chef's Choice, a chocolate cake filled with strawberry compote with a chocolate dipped strawberry on the side. It was obviously done by an amateur, the chocolate on top too thick to cut through, too much filling and the dipped strawberry was over ripe and mushy! The chocolate had a really good taste and the filling was too tart. I noticed that all of the desserts were rather large. I guess that way you can go home pleasantly stuffed.
We enjoyed the diversity of the menu selections, many of which if larger would have made this quite a memorable meal. It is worth coming to support the school and students and enjoy the luxury of a fancy 5 course dinner.
Really enjoyed lunch with two friends, the servers were really good and getting excellent training. The food was superior, and the chefs did a wonderful job. The menu could have explained the items a little more so I knew more what to expect but the taste was above expectations. We are booked for supper next week and looking forward to our second visit.
SCC has the best culinary arts program in the District. To be able to sample their dishes as they go through their rotations is a privilege. The dinners they put out are nothing short of amazing. It's a great night out and wonderful to see the fine work of these student chefs.
This was my third visit, but the experience was a refreshing as my first. I give this organization so much kudos for appreciating fine dining without making it an uncomfortable, pretentious affair.
Regular people can appreciate fine dining, so no need to put on airs. let the food, the service, the integrity of the organization speak for itself ... and that's what Desert Oasis has perfected.
I am proud of SCC's Culinary school
We are regulars at the Artichoke Grill and are never disappointed. The selection can satisfy most people, the service people are delightful, helpful, and efficient. The food is always good, the presentation always unique and well done. The display and description of the desserts is always pleasant and interesting. We applaud all the students, and the manager who oversees the whole operation.
We recommend the Artichoke grill to all our friends who usually become instant fans.
I dined here recently for a special occasion and was pleasantly surprised at the quality of the food, the exceptional service and the lovely dining room. Keep in mind this is a student run restaurant when you assess for yourself what they offer. I assure you that your expectations will be met and surpassed by the variety of menu items that change nightly, the plating and flavors. One of the best things about the meal was the parade of desserts in which the pastry/bakery students come out and and show off their creations while describing it in mouth watering terms. I highly recommend you try the Desert Oasis and support these students.
I go to SCC and have a friend who is currently in the culinary program. So, we get there at our 6 o'clock reservation and were seated immediately by a nice lady. She was checking on everything and giving tips to our server Colin on different aspects of serving. I'm a server with 25 years experience so I must say that Colin was a little shakey with a tray, but he was very efficient, personable and had a nice sense of humor. He referred to us as Ma'am and Sir and brought everything out in a timely manner. The food was fantastic. No complaints there. Plating was beautiful and the dessert display at the end was good. The only thing I would ask is for the servers explain the dishes . I realize the menu explains what you're having but they all came with sauces that weren't explained. The atmosphere was quiet and the dining room was decorated nice. Beware that this is on a reservation so they do not serve booze but they have a nice selection of drinks. We paid around 50 bucks for a 5 course meal. Totally worth it.
Foursome met for lunch and each enjoyed their selections and shared with each other. The wait service was excellent as he shared with us his reason for being in the culinary industry and why he enjoyed the specific part of the menu he was working on that session.
What a great place to have an elegant dinner. The food is great and the ambiance is very nice. It is quiet and they do not rush you through your dining experience. This place is hard to beat for a 5-course dinner, flavorful food, quality of service, and overall dining experience. I highly recommended, especially for an anniversary or a first date.
Always a treat and a delight to eat at the Artichoke Grill. It's a great dining experience in the middle of the sometimes hectic pace of working at a college. The food that is served it great, and inexpensive; a great option to going off campus. The service is friendly and helpful.
The deserts are amazing too. It is an overall fun and enjoyable experience.
We enjoyed our lunch at the Artichoke Grill at SCC. Our hostess was kind to open the door as we arrived and gave us a few moments to admire the parade of desserts. My first thought was wow, I am excited. We sat at a charming table and then our waiter Ryan promptly took our drink order and of course brought us the best Tea in Phoenix. We ordered a house salad and soup to start and then a basket of fresh bread and butter came to accompany our first course. Here comes the entrees; we ordered a stuffed Chicken Breast wrapped in Bacon with house made Pasta and the perfect Hamburger. My daughters comment on her food was "This is the best I have ever had." Our dessert was the icing on the cake for the perfect lunch at this Hidden Gift in Scottsdale. I hope you will enjoy your lunch as much as we did!
I took my girlfriend and toddler for lunch on a Thursday. We were quickly seated and our server Cheyenne was prompt to our table. She was able to answer all of our questions and was very accommodating to our special requests of extra platesfor my little one. The dining area was beautiful and even though there was a large group if what appeared to be students the noise level was kept at a minimum.
I work at Scottsdale Community College so I was made aware of the Artichoke Grill upon hire. I have been there many times for lunch over my tenure there and it never disappoints. The food is unique, tasty and the service is great. If you want to try something a little different and not too pricey, give this place a go.
They were short staff and not as good an ambiance as other times. We have been there several times and really enjoyed the food and ambiance. Food was excellently presented and all very good. Server seemed a little unsure of what to do, etc., but overall we were pleased.
We found our dinner at The Desert Oasis to be excellent in all respects. Of special note was our waitress, Rebecca. She was very knowledgeable about the menu, very pleasant and paced our courses just right.
Each course was delicious and very well presented. I especially enjoyed the shrimp provencale. The shrimp were done perfectly, and shrimp are so easy to overcook or over spice.
I found the subtle decor and ambiance of the restaurant very appealing.
In all, the four of us found the dinner a complete delight and hope to return.
HAVE BEEN GOING TO THE GRILL FOR AT LEAST TEN YEARS!
THIS LAST TIME WAS VERY BAD.
THE MENU AT THE TABLE DID NT NOT MARCH THE ANNUAL FLYER,
I HAVE NEVER INCOUKNTED THIS BEFIRE.
MY ORDER WAS DROKPPED ON THE FLOOR AND THEY HAD NO
THE SECOND CHOICE WAS VERY BAD AS WELL!
MY GUEST BROUTH TO MY ATTENTION HOW BLACK THE
SERVERS NAIL WE.
I WAS TOTALLY EMBARRISED IN FRONT OF KEY CLIIENT!
every time we visit the restaurant the service is always the same great. The only complaint I
had the sea bass wasn't the right portion my wife got the normal portion but my granddaughter
and I got a real small portion I felt bad for her. It was really small and so was mine. The server
however was great and very attentive
An evening here is comparable to the $80 dinner in Scottsdale that our Son took us to for a special occasion. The servings are beautiful works of art. We have been going to SCC dinners since their early beginning in the class room, Never a bad selection. Try something different. Hope the kids that learn what fine dinning is about are able to get employment were the is equal desire of the management.
I had read all the reviews before I booked so I was ready to be amazed. Unfortunately, there is nothing to be amazed at.
The ambience is retirement home chic and is the best argument for a Food Network total makeover I've ever seen.
The food is edible and some is even presented artfully, but so many issues with wrong temperature food, courses arriving before last course dishes have been removed and lack of taste or flavor development that cannot be overlooked. All this happening directly under the watchful eye of the Culinary Director who was acting as Floor Manager on our evening!!
The bright spot was our server, Brodie, I believe, who was a fountain of knowledge, very professional and was able to answer any question put to him and even suggested a "tour of the kitchen" to which we politely declined.
Oh yes, in the best use of irony, as part of the decor, they have large posters of wine bottles and barrels on the DR wall. This in a restaurant that serves no alcohol at all.
Our group of women goes to the Culinary School at Scottsdale Community College every year. The food is unique and beautifully presented. We generally have excellent service; however, this year the pace was quite slow and we spent over two hours eating. We would have liked a little faster pace, especially for working gals who have to get up early the next day. We will come back, though, because we love the unusual selection of food and the lovely presentations.
