Great experience overall!! We enjoyed every bite. Best. Chowder. Ever. Lobster roll - amazing!! Great service and food!!
We are here on business from a land locked state so we wanted to try the seafood when we came to Charleston. We ordered some oysters and clam chowder - both were PERFECT! I had the shrimp and grits and my coworker got the catch of the day. Her meal was absolutely delicious - who knew sweet potatoes, Mahi, and strawberries could be so delicious together?! I had the shrimp and grits and honestly, I could not believe how much butter was on the damn thing oh my god. I swear there was like 4 sticks just on my plate. I don’t know if that’s a southern thing or what, but if you’re into keg standing butter that’s your dish. If not, I would steer clear.
We also absolutely LOVED our server. He was such a sweetie and made our experience absolutely delightful!
We found the seating to be very poorly laid out. At least three couples asked to be moved from the long banquette because it was unfriendly. We found the menu other uninspired. The wait staff was fine but my fried oyster plate was totally overcooked and dry as were the french fries. There are lots of good seafood places but this is not one of them. They really need to clean up their act!
Everything was so nice. The oysters were the best I have ever had.
Loved the food and the service was great! Oysters were very fresh.
Thought the food was going to be better and more plentiful. Very small and salty salmon cakes and a lot of juice but not enough grits in the shrimp and grits entree. A little disappointed as I had better expectations. On a positive note, the restaurant was beautifully decorated and enjoyed the ambiance.
Great food and atmosphere
Absolutely adorable restaurant on King Street. Lovely cocktail and wine list, and perfectly curated menu. Lobster roll was pretty good, but I'm honestly not a fan of scallions on my lobster roll. I loved the choice of sides, and ended up with the hush puppies, which were amazing.
We had a lovely experience. The first time I had dinner at the Darling, I ate at the bar. The food was fabulous but the bartenders were not attentive. I was glad I decided to give them a second chance. The food and service was excellent!
such an intimate space with an amazing atmosphere. thoroughly enjoyed our experience along with A+ seafood! our server was just adorable. very sweet place!
Food was great. Waiter was rude, condescending and ruined the experience for us.
Not seated in the main room so atmosphere was a little lacking.
I had a great view of where the wait staff were entering and leaving the kitchen.....which I hate!
Waitress was knowledgeable, but a little ‘robotic’.
Food was OK. Both dishes were slightly over salted.
Value? 4 scallops for around $35, when you include tax and service. Not exactly a bargain
Awesome dinner the food and service were great.
The Darling is a true gem. Delicious cocktails and tasty oysters. A must if you are visiting Charleston!
Really great oysters, with local flare. Albariño wine was spectacular. Service was impeccable. Would definitely go again.
We met in Charleston for a girls weekend and stopped into Darlings for dinner. We could not have been more happy with our meal! The oysters were delicious and the service was top notch!
Best oysters I ever had. Great drinks. Cool Restaurant
Good food. Not all the seating is great - the main dining area is much more lively and open. Oysters were fantastic !
Visiting Charleston on a March without restaurant reservations, we couldn't find tables at the restaurants we had thought we'd like to visit. But Darling's came up on a list of "similar" places, and they could take us. Lucky us.
Our server was helpful, friendly and informative.
We had oysters from the raw bar to start, which were fresh and delicious.
We like our spirits dry, and the cocktails, while interesting, turned out to be too sweet for our taste. So we asked for Hendricks Gin straight up with muddled mint garnished with sage leaves. Perfect with the oysters!
But it was the remarkable cooking that followed that made the meal memorable. My spouse had scallops that were beautifully seared and cooked perfectly, "the most well prepared I've had in years," she said. They were presented with lentils, sweet golden beets and wilted chard modestly sauced with a hollandaise. She loved the dish.
I ordered shrimp and grits, a ordinary dish that was elevated with crispy/charred Brussels sprouts, lardons, and slices of sautéed fennel. I declined the optional fried egg, but have wondered since what lovely extra richness it might have added to the beautifully cooked grits.
Eat at Darlings!
So glad we reserved our spot because the place was hopping, even on a Thursday night at 7! We ordered a great variety of food, but my favorites were the ceviche appetizer and the special catch of the day, snapper with potato purée and chimichurri. Don’t forget to try the cocktails. The Darling Fashioned should not be missed! Evan Williams Black Bourbon, bitters, charred cane syrup (not at all funky) and vanilla. Seriously delicious. And followed with a recent favorite, an expertly mixed aperol spritz. I’d go back in a skinny minute, although I’m not feeling so skinny at the moment. Deeply satisfying. PS our waiter Zaid deserves applause and/or a raise. Ask for him if you want a pleasant, knowledgeable and amiable waiter. I’d wait in line for a table with him.
Great meal as always! As Charleston natives we are very picky about our seafood in regards to freshness and quality and The Darling never disappoints. Can’t recommend enough.
We had a delightful experience! We started with a drink at the bar which was packed! Dinner in the dining room was awesome with great service and food. We had a hard time deciding what we wanted because it all looked so good! We will definitely recommend to friends and will return soon!
Great oysters! Great wait staff! We had a reservation which helped. Would definitely go back again.
As soon as we walked in we were greeted by friendly staff with smiles on their faces. The first thing i noticed was the oyster bar, which served top notch oysters. Our food was delicious, and so were our drinks. Would highly recommend the shrimp and grits!
Great selection of oysters both local to SC and imported accompanied with great selection of sauces. I ordered the fried clams which were delicious and very unique along with the lobster/king crab roll which was fresh and buttery. Moderate pricing for high quality food.
Amazing - love the Darling!
Extended Family get together was pleasant and never felt rushed. Food was delicious and our server was always avail when needed. Will be back again when in Charleston.
Awesome food! I will try to eat her every Charleston visit!
Went to The Darling twice while visiting Charleston. First for happy hour and the next night for a late dinner. Excellent service both times. Reservation is recommended. Don't miss the king crab parfait or the lobster roll! insanely good!
Fresh seafood and great service. Can’t wait to go back.
Cute place. Unfortunately had an awful waiter. $200 dinner bill for four people (two adults for oysters and sides- no entrees) and it was a birthday dinner- the waiter was rude and didn’t even acknowledge my daughters birthday. We stayed positive throughout the meal but was so disappointed to get in the car and hear our kids mention how rude he was. I was hoping they didn’t notice. Now I wish I could take his $45 tip back.
Service was great, raw bar was amazing, atmosphere was great as well would definitely recommend and go again
My first visit to the restaurant. Had a potential client with me. Bartender was fast and friendly.
Dinner table allowed perfect venue of being in a fun environment but allowed for privacy.
Food was perfect.
I will definitely be back with clients and friends!
It's a good looking atmosphere a little more swanky than most oyster bars I have been in. Didn't realize that it was all raw. Being from NC we are all about some steamed oysters. But I just might be a convert. My husband ordered just a few raw and cocktail shrimp (we ended up ordering more oysters). Our server recommended using their sauce ( type of vinegar) he did along with the cocktail sauce and horseradish. WOW that sauce really compliments the oyster. We will definitely be back to explore the menu more. My husband is hoping they will bottle that secret vinegar sauce!
Literally the worst service I’ve ever had! It took our waiter 15 minutes to greet us and he rarely checked in. In a town like Charleston, it’s so disappointing because there are so many great options. We will not be back!
Ceviche, was flavorful and balanced, shrimp and grits were saucy and delicious! Drinks were good. Service was phenomenal, Zayid (not sure of spelling) was attentive, knowledgeable, and funny. We had a great time all around!
The oysters were great. A couple of other items were good, but not our favorite- grilled octopus didn’t seem grilled and was dressed in a tahini sauce that needed more acid. Scallops were cooked perfectly, but the dish wasn’t extremely flavorful. Service was good.
We were in Charleston and were yearning for raw oysters. The happy hour is an affordable feast!
Reservation was set in advance, but they tried to seat us right next to the front door, where nobody else would sit. We elected to wait for a better table. When seated 15-20 mins late I was looking directly into the service area. Not good. Food was very good, however even for Charleston it was pricey. I have no problem with the high expense, but I expect the experience to be high as well. Also, men’s restroom was not kept clean (urinal puddles!), waste overflowing. I gather many people are taken by this restaurant. I’m not impressed, and will not return.
