Crown Room Ratings and Reviews
This place is THE PLACE to go for a quite romantic night out with the hubby(: We went on a Thursday night and had the entire place to ourselves, talk about impeccable service! Our server, Naan, made us feel completely at home and relaxed enough to fill the dinning room with our conversation. Carl, the bartender mixed our drinks just perfectly and I would definitely recommend the peach Julep if you enjoy a fun spin on a good classic.
The overall atmosphere was completely luxurious with plush chairs and fresh flowers on every table. Our favorite item of the night had to be the palate cleanser composed of tart raspberry sorbet and sparkling wine, simply delicious. Also mushroom, cognac Demi glacé that comes with the filet mignons is absolutely delicious and I would definitely recommend requesting extra on the side! The highlight of the night was getting to meet the chef who was a complete delight and even let us get a picture with him!
We will definitely be returning on our next visit to Albuquerque, New Mexico!
Heard this was a great "up-scale" place with great steaks through a friend of a family member. Was a little worried about the location (near Central and Louisiana at the Casino) but decided to try it anyhow. Even though the website says "reservations recommended" there was virtually no one there when we arrived @ 7PM on a Saturday night. Yikes! The service was very good, but since there were no other tables to wait on, it should have been. Our waiter was very friendly and tried very hard to make our dinner pleasant. Food was mediocre (everything was just warm when served) and not inexpensive. The location is worrisome, there were lots of questionable people hanging around outside (we got "panhandled" on the way out to the car), so I would not go back even if the food had been outstanding and the place packed. Too bad, I feel for the wait staff as they are dying with few customers and tips.
The restaurant was completely empty except for us and one other table who left halfway through our meal so we were alone in the restaurant on a Saturday night. The food was presented beautifully but was extremely salty. The steaks were of medium quality. We could hear everything from the kitchen- not sure why we were seated at a tiny 2 top when every table was open? Too bad because the atmosphere is lovely.
Go to the casino at the Downs, valet then walk in the front door , bear right immediately then straight back passing the cafeteria. Once onside the room I was impressed with the elegant decor, the lighting and the background music via recordings of standards. The drinks are innovative, But the fruity mojito was a bit too sweet formy wife. I had a "classic" old fashioned made with some bing cherries. Excellent
The duck relleno was unique. Great flavor. Having been here before we knew everything was good, but in my opinion the 10oz bacon wrapped filet with a mushroom sauce is THE BEST. I had the baked potato which has rock salt on the skin. Everything was prepared perfectly.
We had a wonderful dinner. It was quiet, the staff was attentive and the Chef came out to say Hello. Everyone's food was delicious. I had a Brown Sugar, Banana Cocktail that was amazing and they ended our evening by giving a rose to both my mom and myself. My only other comment would be to add a small sign with the name of the restaurant outside so people know that it's by the casino and not by the grandstand.
This was a first visit. We decided to have Easter brunch with a small group of friends and family. We were disappointed overall. Had to smell the smoke from the casino on the way to the restaurant. The restaurant itself was a small dark room. Three of our party had to switch chairs as most of them were too low for the table. These were heavy chairs so my husband got a workout before dinner. I noticed other customers switching chairs with other tables as well. The brunch was a fixed price -- $40 per person and included a 4 course brunch. All were pleased with the meal presentation. I ordered the chicken and waffle plate -- waffles were not warm and somewhat soft. Fried chicken had obviously been prepared and left sitting in the kitchen -- lukewarm and soggy. Service was a bit slow but friendly. My husband had the steak and eggs and enjoyed his meal as did the other three people in my party. We all agreed that we would not return, primarily because of a lack of ambience, average food and high price.
You know it was an interesting little room...gave you the feeling of intimacy and that you were in for something special. Our waitress was phenomenal. But really the meal and the drinks were so overpriced. Really this is New Mexico! You don't need to rip off your own neighbors. we had friends who asked us about our special Easter Brunch. I was so excited to surprise my husband. I even hinted this could be a Mother's day venue. My comments were it was extremely overrated and very average. Glad we ate there once but would never pay that price again to have to fool around and move chairs around so that I wasn't sitting in a pit of a chair and neither was my husband who is 6'3". It was pretty ridiculous. We almost left as soon as we were seated since no one approached our table for quite a while. Thanks.
During Easter Brunch the coffee kept cooling down too fast; don't know if it didn't start out hot enough or if the room temp was too cool, or both? It might have been the room temp because the main entree which should have been hot; I like my breakfast hot off the stove, it cooled off to quick also. Maybe it started out cold coming out of the kitchen. If you are trying to cool off the staff, be aware it is also cooling the food. Tristan was friendly and made the rounds in the dining room, very nice touch to meet the chef. I would have preferred less to no pink mousse on my chicken and waffle plate. I encourage the creative menu, just find a way to deliver the food hot. Thank you.
The Crown Room features great food, a very good wine list, and was (for a Friday night) unexpectedly quiet. The Dining Room deserves more patronage. That would help the Servers to gain more experience, as we found that parts of the service experience could be improved.
Me and my Wife went for Valentines day for the first time and we're really amazed at how great the food was with such excellent service. I have recommended it to several friends in the last few days and will also be going back more often. Thanks for the entire experience
We had very high hopes for this place but this was the worst experience we have ever had at any restaurant. It took 15 minutes for us to be greeted by our server, my wife was asked what she would like to drink and she requested a drink menu, the sever left without asking me what I would like to drink. 10 minutes later the server returned and took our drink order. After sitting for 30 minutes we overheard some of the other tables talking about how terrible their service was and that their night was "ruined" keep in mind this was a valentine's day "special" that the restaurant had put on so many people were there just for that. It took about an hour for our food to come out which did not seem fresh at all, for a $110 meal we had expected so much more. Towards the end of our meal 4 tables started talking amongst themselves about how terrible their service had been, I overheard one of the tables being compensated for their meal because they were so unhappy. We are not ones to complain so we were just going to mark this experience as a loss and move on. We were presented with the bill and as I sat there pondering how I felt about paying so much for a terrible experience, a gentleman who looked to be the chief came up to us and apologized for our experience and said he would credit part of our meal. This was appreciated but isn't enough to persuade us to come back or recommend The Crown Room to anyone.
Major disappointment. I made reservations to celebrate Valentine's Day. The food was not hot not even the steaks. My husbands steak was over cooked ordered medium got well done. The chef came by and we made him aware and he said he would take care of it, but didn't. The service was sub par, we were told they had taken someone who works in the food court to be a server because they were going to be so busy for the holiday. It showed our server didn't even check on us didn't ask if everything was ok or if we needed anything. It was a major disappointment, I have never had an experience like this with an open table reservation.
BEWARE OF FRAUDULENT CREDIT CARD CHARGES! Numerous false charges made to my credit card from the DOWNS AT ALBUQUERQUE after eating here on 2/10/2017. Three separate charges made, none the correct amount. Appears waiter decided to increase his tip substantially (we gave 20%). Have disputed with credit card company - due to odd hours of this establishment have not had luck reaching anyone. Check your credit card statements if you ate here on 2/10/2017.
Food was good - Chef Tristan White did a nice job with the Valentines Day Menu - but due to these false charges, experience has now been ruined. Will likely never eat here again.
We celebrated an anniversary with family. The service was great - all questions answered and suggestions provided when requested. All selections from fish to steak were presented beautifully and cooked to perfection. We celebrated with flaming desserts prepared at the table. Fun to watch and delicious to share among the 6 of us. The wine suggested by our server went perfectly with all entrees. It was a fun time for all and we look forward to going back.
The ambiance was great. The staff was professional and very cordial. Unfortunately, they offered a special menu (4-Course Dinner) for News Year's Eve that did not provide an option for a vegetarian, and was very exotic. The menu was not published in any of their ads nor on Open Table. I also was unable to contact a live person prior to making the reservation. The staff was very understanding when we opted to leave prior to ordering.
Food was tasty . Wife had the salmon which was good and nicely presented. I had the Bison. I was cut to thin for Bison and although I had ordered it medium it came out well done. So it was over cooked. Had a lot of grisll. Flavor was good. Service left something to be desired. Seemed to me the waiter was under trained. All in all the place is good.
We went to the Crown Room to eat and catch the jazz duet that played this last Sunday. They have a four course Sunday brunch for $35 per person that was a value. The service was first rate. My only complaint is that the restaurant is accessed through the front of the Downs Casino and it's a smoke heavy hallway and the same for getting to the restroom.
We attended the Jack Daniels Whiskey tasting dinner. The food and the whiskey was well paired. We appreciated the attention we got from the chef, the Jack Daniels people and the band. The only downside to the dinner is that they did not have record at the Crown
Room of our reservation made thru Open Table. Since it was a special seating, we felt fortunate that they could still accommodate us. This glitch could have made a much looked forward to evening into a big disappointment!
A hidden gem!! Don't be put off by the casino location--you are isolated from the noise and don't have to walk through the casino floor to get to the restaurant. It's tucked into a dark corner with comfortable chairs and great music. Our drinks were outstanding, and the service was superb. We had the New Orleans shrimp linguini and petit filet and both were excellent--the filet was perfectly cooked. We also had the pork belly appetizer and bananas foster as it was a special occasion and the restaurant really took fantastic care of us. You would never know it was in a casino once the entrance door closes behind you. Everything was reasonably priced as well. I highly, highly recommend it.
