Living in ABQ, you accept a lack of fine dining. I love unpretentious food and don't need fru-fru. But on occasion, an event needs an up-scale meal (and its attendant prices). Usually, we hop up the road to Santa Fe. Still, some place closer would be welcome. I had hopes for the Crown Room. Well, except for the prices, it isn't upscale and there were many problems.
Any true steakhouse will train its waiters to advise customers how to order doneness. When I said I wanted a "warm red center" the waiter had no idea what that meant. He suggested "medium." No. Medium is pink. So, I took the chance that, like a Ruth's Cris, medium rare would work. Sorta. The steak was a huge cut NY strip 2.5 inches thick. The center was darkish pink, (a bit overdone for me, but ok) and there was not too much gray rim, suggesting the steak was oven-finished (good). It tasted fine, not great, a bit over-seasoned. Texture didn't suggest prime. Worth $40? Uh...
The "creamed spinach" was a puddle of liquidy béchamel in which swam sad strands of spinach, a ridiculous inversion of ingredients.(see photo)
My companion ordered a sous vide lobster tail. It came out a piece of mush that she had to return. The second attempt was better, with a nicely firm tail that was lacking much flavor.
Dessert was Bananas Foster, presented table-side. It's hard to mess up a dish of butter, sugar, bananas, rum. Still, the chef did not adequately reduce the liquid. Instead of a silky syrup, it was the consistency of broth. There was a dessert tray with a variety of items, but amazingly, the waiter couldn't tell us what they all were. "I didn't have a chance to find out what that one was." (I should point out on a Saturday at 7:30 PM we were the only customers in the place - not sure what took up his time.)
Staff was friendly, accommodating, and meant well, but seemed out of their league with a lack of experience, training, or front-house management. May have been a fluke bad night, but no plan to return.
Enjoyed the Crown Room and will definitely go back.
We typically go on one “nice” date a month, so when we go, we like to take our time. The server seemed awfully annoyed that we wanted to have a cocktail before ordering, not order our dinner until our appetizer/bread was gone, and then finish the rest of our wine leisurely after our meal. It was very frustrating and we won’t be back. We did however, enjoy the friendly bartender.
Service was poor, very poor. The drinks were the highlight.
Two folks in our party sent their steaks back twice and they still could not cook them correctly. Food served cold.
The staff was very professional , friendly and attentive.
The food was very well prepared.
For Valentine’s Day the restaurant had a set five course menu. Four of the courses were amazing however the first course was a bit overdone. A simple pear salad would’ve been a much better option. Having said this, the restaurant and the executive chef especially accommodating as we had a couple of children dining with us. The price for the 5 courses was very reasonable and we all enjoyed ourselves.
Food was upscale and finely presented. Ambient spaciousness and non-crowding perfect for romantic conversation and quiet meal. Service at the table was rushed despite my asking the server to give my partner more time to eat slowly. At high-end prices, diners ought to be able to tarry over meal courses, NOT be hurried.
This was our 3rd meal at "Open Table"/Crown Room. I would recommend this venue BUT WITH QUALIFICATIONS.
My assessment: overpriced for what you get.
We had an excellent Valentine's dinner. The food was great, the wait staff were great, and the atmosphere was great.
We will definitely be back.
The staff was amazing. They were very attentive to our needs and even put a rush on our dessert so we could make it to the theatre on time. My husbands ribeye was perfect thanks to the advice of our waiter on how to get it cooked. I, however, was very disappointed with my whole meal. The shrimp cocktail was warm and chewy; the lobster was rubber with a strange garnish; the au gratin potatoes were dry and cold; and the bananas foster was runny. But overall we enjoyed the atmosphere and the quiet. Thank you.
Chef came out to actually check on us and make sure the food was what we wanted and expected. AWESOME. Waiter was very professional and accommodating! Secret hidden treasure for sure !!!!!
Everything was exceptional! Went for my husband's 30th birthday and the entire staff was great! Tristan, our chef, came out and said hi and checked on us throughout the meal. Just a great venue and the food was outstanding! Great service all night and my husband was very impressed and happy with our surprise date.
Great food. Very attentive service. Excellent cocktails.
Would not recommend it to anyone. While the food was very good. The service was lousy in a room with only about 25 people at 4 tables. The bar tender did not know how to make cocktails. The waiter brought 3 appetizers for 4 people.
Enuff said. Never Again
Food was excellent and the presentation was awesome.
The chef even came out and asked how everything was.
The Crown Room is beautiful and the service is exceptional. We had a special menu for New Years Eve. The food was not worth the price. The first course was sitting on the plate when we arrived and it had developed a crust on it while sitting there. The salad was very basic, spring mix and little flavor. The scallops were good but served with black beans, seemed like a weird combo to me. The steak was under cooked for me, lacked in flavor, tough and just not very good. Best course was dessert, yummy cheesecake. They were very kind to make sure everything was gluten free. But the food was not tasty enough for me to return.
Went for New Year's Eve and enjoyed the menu! Chef Tristan always stops by to check on your dining experience.
Very nice dining experience. The lobster cioppino was exceptional as was the rib eye. The chef may be the best in Albuquerque and the service is right there with him!
we read all the other reviews. Yes the location is in a transitional area and not a big fan of the cigarette smoke when you first enter the casino. There is valet parking and once you get to the restaurant, you receive nothing less than VIP treatment. The atmosphere, food and service is exceptional. The champagne sorbet between courses was very nice and the rose at the end of the dining experience for my wife made it even more memorable.
Third time there and always great service and nice atmosphere.
The Crown Room is a fine place to eat that has service reminiscent of the Old Petroleum Club. The staff and chef are open and friendly and work to please the customer. The food was tasty, and the sauce with the chateaubriand was excellent.
This place is THE PLACE to go for a quite romantic night out with the hubby(: We went on a Thursday night and had the entire place to ourselves, talk about impeccable service! Our server, Naan, made us feel completely at home and relaxed enough to fill the dinning room with our conversation. Carl, the bartender mixed our drinks just perfectly and I would definitely recommend the peach Julep if you enjoy a fun spin on a good classic.
The overall atmosphere was completely luxurious with plush chairs and fresh flowers on every table. Our favorite item of the night had to be the palate cleanser composed of tart raspberry sorbet and sparkling wine, simply delicious. Also mushroom, cognac Demi glacé that comes with the filet mignons is absolutely delicious and I would definitely recommend requesting extra on the side! The highlight of the night was getting to meet the chef who was a complete delight and even let us get a picture with him!
We will definitely be returning on our next visit to Albuquerque, New Mexico!
The Crown Room was lovely. We dined on a Sunday evening when other fine dining restaurants in Albuquerque were closed. Everything was wonderful.
Great place to have an intimate dinner. A pleasant surprise for a restaurant
located in a Casino. The food and service were excellent.
Heard this was a great "up-scale" place with great steaks through a friend of a family member. Was a little worried about the location (near Central and Louisiana at the Casino) but decided to try it anyhow. Even though the website says "reservations recommended" there was virtually no one there when we arrived @ 7PM on a Saturday night. Yikes! The service was very good, but since there were no other tables to wait on, it should have been. Our waiter was very friendly and tried very hard to make our dinner pleasant. Food was mediocre (everything was just warm when served) and not inexpensive. The location is worrisome, there were lots of questionable people hanging around outside (we got "panhandled" on the way out to the car), so I would not go back even if the food had been outstanding and the place packed. Too bad, I feel for the wait staff as they are dying with few customers and tips.
The restaurant was completely empty except for us and one other table who left halfway through our meal so we were alone in the restaurant on a Saturday night. The food was presented beautifully but was extremely salty. The steaks were of medium quality. We could hear everything from the kitchen- not sure why we were seated at a tiny 2 top when every table was open? Too bad because the atmosphere is lovely.
Go to the casino at the Downs, valet then walk in the front door , bear right immediately then straight back passing the cafeteria. Once onside the room I was impressed with the elegant decor, the lighting and the background music via recordings of standards. The drinks are innovative, But the fruity mojito was a bit too sweet formy wife. I had a "classic" old fashioned made with some bing cherries. Excellent
The duck relleno was unique. Great flavor. Having been here before we knew everything was good, but in my opinion the 10oz bacon wrapped filet with a mushroom sauce is THE BEST. I had the baked potato which has rock salt on the skin. Everything was prepared perfectly.
We had a wonderful dinner. It was quiet, the staff was attentive and the Chef came out to say Hello. Everyone's food was delicious. I had a Brown Sugar, Banana Cocktail that was amazing and they ended our evening by giving a rose to both my mom and myself. My only other comment would be to add a small sign with the name of the restaurant outside so people know that it's by the casino and not by the grandstand.
We were extremely disappointed. The buffet type brunch that was served last Mother's Day is what we were expecting. Food was not very good. Why would anyone think a kid would find a green pancake appetizing
Great dinner, excellent steaks. Everything we had there was outstanding. Service was great as well.
Tory, out waiter was fantastic. The food was amazing.
This was a first visit. We decided to have Easter brunch with a small group of friends and family. We were disappointed overall. Had to smell the smoke from the casino on the way to the restaurant. The restaurant itself was a small dark room. Three of our party had to switch chairs as most of them were too low for the table. These were heavy chairs so my husband got a workout before dinner. I noticed other customers switching chairs with other tables as well. The brunch was a fixed price -- $40 per person and included a 4 course brunch. All were pleased with the meal presentation. I ordered the chicken and waffle plate -- waffles were not warm and somewhat soft. Fried chicken had obviously been prepared and left sitting in the kitchen -- lukewarm and soggy. Service was a bit slow but friendly. My husband had the steak and eggs and enjoyed his meal as did the other three people in my party. We all agreed that we would not return, primarily because of a lack of ambience, average food and high price.
You know it was an interesting little room...gave you the feeling of intimacy and that you were in for something special. Our waitress was phenomenal. But really the meal and the drinks were so overpriced. Really this is New Mexico! You don't need to rip off your own neighbors. we had friends who asked us about our special Easter Brunch. I was so excited to surprise my husband. I even hinted this could be a Mother's day venue. My comments were it was extremely overrated and very average. Glad we ate there once but would never pay that price again to have to fool around and move chairs around so that I wasn't sitting in a pit of a chair and neither was my husband who is 6'3". It was pretty ridiculous. We almost left as soon as we were seated since no one approached our table for quite a while. Thanks.
During Easter Brunch the coffee kept cooling down too fast; don't know if it didn't start out hot enough or if the room temp was too cool, or both? It might have been the room temp because the main entree which should have been hot; I like my breakfast hot off the stove, it cooled off to quick also. Maybe it started out cold coming out of the kitchen. If you are trying to cool off the staff, be aware it is also cooling the food. Tristan was friendly and made the rounds in the dining room, very nice touch to meet the chef. I would have preferred less to no pink mousse on my chicken and waffle plate. I encourage the creative menu, just find a way to deliver the food hot. Thank you.
We were 5 people, all the steaks and lamb was very good, except the rib eye steak. Had to send it back once but still could not eat it the second time. Cut of meat was inferior and not way over cooked. Other than that it was very good.
It was an amazing experience overall. If I could give it a 10 I would, all of the food was amazing a presented flawlessly. My friend and I had an amazing time and will definitely be back and recommending the crown room to all of my friends.
The Crown Room features great food, a very good wine list, and was (for a Friday night) unexpectedly quiet. The Dining Room deserves more patronage. That would help the Servers to gain more experience, as we found that parts of the service experience could be improved.
A true hidden gem! How did I not know about this restaurant before? Fantastic dinner, impeccable service, great decor!
From the hand crafted cocktails, appetizers, salads, soups & main entrees... All amazing!
I will definitely go again! Highly recommended!
The bread was cold, the red velvet cake was very dry it was like it was sitting there for a while. This was on Valentine's Day.... it felt rushed
Love love love this place. One of my top 3 favorite restaurants in Albuquerque. I just finished having the most tender steak ever
