First time at this restaurant and looking forward to going back. We both had the fish and chips...some of the best ever!

Parking is hard to find. The hotel is very quaint and pretty, and inside it is lively, noisy, and energetic. There are upstairs and basement rooms and bars. We were in the basement. It is very cozy and romantic, apart from the noise. Food was good but not great, but a good value. I drink bourbon and they did not have much of a selection. The atmosphere really is wonderful though and I would go back in a heartbeat. It helps when you have a beautiful girl with you. )

Our server was nice. Food not so great. Big portions but was not seasoned well. My appetizer was completely bland, no salt. Mashed potatoes tasted like they came from a box.

The food was good, typical American fair. When we arrived, the host brought us downstairs to the pub area for our reservation. Thinking that we would get seated upstairs, we were told reservation and parties are downstairs. We we got down, we were told it would still be another 15 mins, even though we had reservations. It was crowded and hot. With so many people crammed into the lower level, they still had the fireplace on. The noise was through the roof. We actually got seated in a small room in the back where the fireplace was, and a 10 person party, that was as loud as they can be. At times, it was unbearable. The waiter was prompt, and polite and got our orders right, so no issues there.

Overall, I would try this place again, but ask to be seated upstairs in the main dining area next time. Maybe it would be a better experience.

Let me be clear:
1. The food was EXCELLENT.
2. Do NOT make a reservation -- this is a waste of time.

We arrived on time for our 8PM reservation, and were told that no tables were available. We waited for 45 minutes and finally got a table after some back-and-forth with the hostess. We didn't get our food until 9:45PM. To their credit, we asked them to pay for a round of drinks (there were 4 of us), which they did and amounted to taking $40 off of our bill.

Dined there on a recent Saturday night and basically had 4 appetizers, but no main courses.

We shared Garlic Shrimp and Scallop which were OK, but not very exciting nor big for the price.

My wife had a salad - also pretty uninspired and I had the French Onion soup which had virtually no taste at all.

Service was friendly and competent and the surroundings pleasant enough.

Maybe it is more of a burger and beer type of place.

Quaint atmosphere, the original hotel by the train station and you can sit on the enclosed porch which is enjoyable in the warmer weather.

The nacho appetizer and burgers are always reliably good. Make a reservation since it tends to be busy on Friday and Saturday.

Not bad for a basic pub. I had a cheeseburger which was cooked to my liking but the burger itself lacked any taste. Service was attentive and I will go again to try something else.

Very nice old historic landmark in a very nice town. Staff was excellent, restaurant/bar was clean. Nice ambiance. However, the appetizers we had (eggplant caprese and grilled shrimp were tough and over cooked. Thought the prices were a bit high given the quality of the food. The service was excellent and the staff was friendly and welcoming.

We hadn't been to this place in a while and we like the outdoor dining. It was our anniversary but we really were lax in planning ahead so we thought this might be a casual answer to our dilemma . We reserved on line and arrived promptly. We had no trouble being seated quickly. The food and drinks were good and we were able to be seated outside. Great celebration!

Went on July 4th. Not a good idea. One waitress was waiting on all the outside tables. Tried her best but task was impossible. Food was good and gladly we were not in a hurry. Usually things are better at other times. Always a good place for a casual meal and a glass of wine or beer.

Would've been a 5 star experience, but food took forever to come out. May have been some problems with the kitchen or Mother's Day holiday. But the food was good, service staff very friendly, and a historic and cozy feel to the restaurant.

Just stay away. Our experience was horrific. I brought my parents, wife and kids for Mothers' Day. They had nothing special in place for Mothers' Day (that's fine). We sat down at 4:45 and ordered drinks, appetizers and our main courses. 20 minutes later we had our drinks, and it was only 40 minutes after that when the appetizers arrived - after we had to check on them. When they did arrive, neither the calamari nor the french onion soup were actually finished cooking. The manager eventually brought us appetizer plates - 2 of them for the 6 of us.

When dinner finally showed up, it was ... not good. Fish and chips I got was greasy and mushy. Both my parents for the Penne with Friends. One had a bunch of broccoli and sausage; the other almost none. And both were swimming in oil. My son's pizza was burnt to a crisp.

After this mess of an experience, all of which we mentioned to them, they didn't take anything off the bill or give us anything to make up for the disaster of our Mothers' Day meal.
We won't be back, that's for damn sure.

I made a reservation for Mother's Day this year and was disappointed . The restaurant was understaffed . They had one waitress taking care of all the tables in one section including the outside tables (total of probably 12 tables at once ) . We felt ignored . The fried food tasted like the fryer oil hadn't been changed in months . Everything fried tasted like burnt oil . The history of the establishment was great , and I enjoyed our large table . Unfortunately do to the poor staffing and bad food we will not be returning . These problems can easily be solved, and I hope this review resonates with the owner .

Cute place in cranford. Lots of choices on their menu and their wine list was good as well. I liked the area it's in and the outdoor seating looks nice. Too bad it wasn't warm enough outside for that. Would definitely go back.
