My husband and I were looking forward to our dinner at The Cottage, a restaurant we had heard great things about—especially given its James Beard recognition. With the only available reservation at 6pm, we were eager to experience the menu, which appeared inventive and full of promise.
We were seated promptly upon arrival and warmly greeted by our server. Cocktails arrived in a timely fashion; the mojito spritz was refreshing and well-balanced.
We began with the white miso grilled octopus and the hiramasa crudo with pickled strawberries. While the portion of octopus was generous, it arrived cold and lacked any distinct flavor of miso or togarashi, making it feel disconnected from the description. In contrast, the hiramasa crudo was the highlight of the evening—delicate slices of fish elevated by a bright and flavorful leche de tigre, strawberry umeboshi, and pickled green strawberries. It was summery, elegant, and thoughtfully composed, albeit quite small. Unfortunately, the meal took a turn from there. Our entrées were brought out immediately after our appetizers were cleared, which gave the meal an overly rushed and impersonal feel. My husband’s pasta with duck confit and fava beans was underwhelming—light on the confit and lacking depth or seasoning. My own dish, the Peking duck breast with smoked honey, sour cherries, Napa cabbage, and vanilla oil, was equally disappointing. The duck was tough, served room temperature, and had unrendered skin. Neither the smoked honey nor vanilla oil came through, and the small shreds of cabbage were singed and unseasoned, making them unpleasant to eat. The sour c herries added a nice bright contrast, but couldn’t save the dish as a whole.
Overall, the evening fell short of expectations—not just in terms of food execution, but in pacing and experience. What should have been a memorable meal at a distinguished restaurant instead felt hurried and unrefined. We hope this was an off night, but sadly, it did not reflect the caliber.

Duck main course was good; local bass was excellent
Dacquoise was fabulous.
Excellent waitstaff. Moderately high noise level once restaurant filled.

So disappointed. We were charges $2 when asked for more aperal spritz in drink. Chips with lobster roll were so salty they were inedible. The food portions were so small when charged over $50 for halibut.
