About The Commoner
The Commoner is anything but common. American classics with a touch of the unexpected are at the heart of this Downtown Pittsburgh restaurant. The vibrant design recalls Pittsburgh’s industrial past and complements a kitchen that excels at adding modern flourishes to classic comforts. We serve an authentic, locally-focused, ingredient-driven menu that showcases the massive wood-fired oven at the center of The Commoner’s exhibition kitchen. A robust selection of local beers and craft spirits completes the American tavern feel.
Steps away, Commoner Corner, a sidewalk-facing, smoked-meat carvery offers sit-down and grab-and-go breakfast and lunch to locals on the move. The Commoner is really carving a name for itself among Pittsburgh restaurants.

The Commoner Ratings and Reviews
Casual gastropub with nice ambience. Food is generally good. Not exceptional but certainly good. Some of the dishes are a bit ambitious but don’t quite hit the mark. I ordered the lamb stew which had a delicious, rich sauce but the lamb itself was a bit tough and definitely not stew-like. I’ve had the Commoner burger and Shepherds Pie in the past. Both quite tasty but not “amazing”. This time around we had a great waiter so our service tonight was quite good. Very attentive. Food came out of the kitchen at a reasonable pace which was welcomed because the restaurant was busy. Overall it’s a better than average pub with interesting food offerings and generally good service. A pleasant place if you’re in the mood for casual dining or “comfort food”.
We went to the Commoner in Hotel Monaco for Sunday brunch, but were unable to stay after just being seated, because a water pipe had burst in the hotel. The Commoner staff was a bit flustered by the episode, but was professional throughout as they escorted patrons out of the restaurant. We went down the street to the Terrace Room at the Omni William Penn Hotel, where the service and the meal were outstanding, in a truly beautiful setting.
Despite the good food, I would not go back due to the lackluster service. Our waiter seemed to forget we were his table and was rarely around. He also did a very poor job answering questions about the menu and literally read off to us the description that was on the menu. Our food was poorly timed and across the board the service detracted from our dining experience. Reading reviews, I am not alone in this opinion. Too bad because the place was nice inside (though a bit loud) and the menu creative.
The Good/very good:
Beef Cheeks - good
Octopus appetizer - wonderful!
Scotch egg - wonderful!
Wine - very nice
The dessert - green tea sorbet, and the pudding dessert cake. mmmm mmm
Service - wonderful!
The company at the table - Husband, and Mother. Awesome!!!
Beef tartar - bland, and fatty. Not appetizing at all. I finished it after spicing it up myself.
Had the cornish game hen - it came out raw and had to return it - did not want another. Waiter, and management were completely professional, and apologetic. Mistakes happen but still unexpected and ruins the appetite.
It was our 3rd time there this year before a Pens game. 1st/2nd time was very good. This last time - obviously put off by the raw poultry and even though mistakes are made and they obviously did not charge us for the raw poultry (and the manager did come by which was appropriate) but I feel at a restaurant such as this - they would step up to the plate and hit a home run by comping the entire meal. No biggie - just won't take a future chance on this restaurant as there are too many other establishments to visit in the area.
Issue #1-Stopped in for a quick bite with my 1 yr old granddaughter. Was seated at a bar "with a highchair."
Issue #2-Ordered her food first but yet mine arrived before hers. I couldn't eat at all because I had to hold her while I fed her.
Once the waiter realized the awkwardness she only returned once for the check to be signed.
The positive is that the food was wonderful.
We have been here several times and we always had a good experience. But this time service was not good at all! She brought the order for the main course messed up, and the sauce on the side although never asked for it. She was very late to take our order for the main course, waiting for us to finish eating our appetizers and after 20-30' did take our entrees order... The food is very good, tasty, good serving size, nice environment. Maybe it was just bad day for our waitress, or she was under training.
Excellent service with great meals. Very difficult to choose from some very interesting dishes. Cocktail was spot on, plenty of draft beer choices. We ordered the octopus app, lamb stew and wagyu burger. Large portions. Would definitely go back next time we visit Pittsburgh.
Server was terribly rude. We were celebrating a special occasion - when my mother asked for a cocktail - the server simply and rudely answered "no" with an awkward pause and then reported that they do not carry the alcohol she was requesting. The server do not even attempt to offer suitable drink replacement, and just stood there staring at my mother quietly. She really should not be working in the service industry. All of our questions were answered very abruptly... we left without ordering any dessert or after meal cocktail. The food was amazing (as usual) - we dine here often... well we did before this experience. I don't think we will be returning.
Please try the appetizers menu - a broad range of interesting eats like the boiled egg covered in batter and deep fried, or the duck wings. And don't miss the craft cocktails menu - with excellent Bourbon, Vodka and Gin based drinks. i had the Tommy Collins - excellent! Great facility and ambiance. Great service and she knew the details of the menu. Order the 2 bone pork chop!! A++
We stayed at the Hotel Monaco and had dinner at the Commoner downstairs. It took a while for us to get our drinks and appetizer - maybe 15 minutes for a drink, 30 for the appetizer. The fried cauliflower appetizer was great! The food was OK - no one raved. I had duck leg confit which was OK but it was surrounded by tasteless, spongy something. I don't know if the slow service was because of the kitchen, bar or our server.
