The Commoner is anything but common. American classics with a touch of the unexpected are at the heart of this Downtown Pittsburgh restaurant. The vibrant design recalls Pittsburgh’s industrial past and complements a kitchen that excels at adding modern flourishes to classic comforts. We serve an authentic, locally-focused, ingredient-driven menu that showcases the massive wood-fired oven at the center of The Commoner’s exhibition kitchen. A robust selection of local beers and craft spirits completes the American tavern feel.

Steps away, Commoner Corner, a sidewalk-facing, smoked-meat carvery offers sit-down and grab-and-go breakfast and lunch to locals on the move. The Commoner is really carving a name for itself among Pittsburgh restaurants.

We had a lovely dinner her on a Friday night. Really enjoyed the atmosphere of the restaurant and the service was friendly and attentive. My husband had the Scottish Salmon which was wonderful and I had the Vegetarian Tikka Masala, also very delicious. We shared a delicious sweet potato bisque and I had a cocktail from the bar while he enjoyed a draft microbrew. The crowd was all young professionals and the space is nicely decorated. We'll be back!

Good food, but overpriced drinks. $11 for 12 oz. beer?

Nice place, love the ambiance and the decor was spot on. Food was good not great, drinks and cocktails were great though and well made. Service was pretty slow and our waitress and hostesses were less then enthused to be working but not the worst service either.

The fried chicken sandwich is🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥. I’ve been to the restaurant twice while traveling on business and have had a wonderful lunch on both occasions.

We frequently have enjoyed The Commoner prior to Pen’s games. The food was terrific including the Scotch Eggs and fingerlings as appetizers. The lamb shank was delectable. It was so tender it fell from the bone. The drinks were great, as we have come to expect. Unfortunately, the service was the worst we have ever experienced. Our waitress, K*** , was inattentive and couldn’t explain certain menu items (and didn’t ask for help). We nearly missed the beginning of the hockey game despite 5:30 reservations. Her inattentive behavior disrupted an otherwise terrific meal. We will return as this appeared to be an exception rather than the rule based on our previous experience . If this turns out to be the “new” service level, we will have to find another pregame choice.

The pork chop was one of the best I've ever had, and the all around service was impeccable.

Celebrated Valentine's Day 2018 at The Commoner. We both had the Butter Salad and the Ribeye. Food was fantastic. Service was very quick. Server was able to fully explain the menu, which was a big help. Dessert was fantastic as well. We shared the Sticky Toffee Pudding which was in the top 3 desserts that I ever ate. I would definitely come back and recommend.

We made reservations over a week in advance. Despite this, we had to sit along the "chef's counter" that looks into the kitchen and the back storage room. It was bright, noisy, and distracting. The bar seating forces you to turn sideways to speak, which is fine for a bar, but not for dinner. It was uncomfortable and could be awkward if you're not familiar with your dinner date. It really tainted the experience.

Prices also seemed a bit high for a Pittsburgh market. The cocktails were creative but the quality didn't match the cost.

Our waitress, on the other hand, was kind, attentive, and clearly very competent.
