Welcome to The Common. Conveniently located at the Marriott Inn and Conference Center at University of Maryland University College, this convivial gathering place is the ideal location to gather with guests for a special occasion! Bring friends or colleagues to dine with us!
View Private Dining DetailsThe food was good quality, and the servers were lovely. The restaurant was nearly empty, and yet it took a very long time to get our lunch. So long that the servers kept apologizing.
There was a dead mouse outside the entrance way. I told the host as I came in; 45 minutes later when I pasted the host again, and asked if they saw it - they said yet; upon leaving 2 hours after arrival, the dead mouse was still outside the entrance way; hostess was excellent; food was good
Sadly was very disappointed. While the menu is limited as i expected, the quality and presentation should have made up for, however, It fell short! If you are a wine drinker with dinner, be warned, they admittedly do not store wine appropriately, as a result two bottles of Swanson Cab were wasted as they had both turned. Third bottle of whatever it was also questionable.
The Commons Restaurant is a good place to go for a quick bite and a drink both before and after campus events. The service is mostly friendly (better in the morning & at lunch). They also have a fantastic breakfast buffet. The two major drawbacks are that the seating & table height is disproportionate. In almost every seat (except for the bar) you feel like your a small child or sitting on the floor because the chairs don't match the table height. Also, the staff at night seem a bit overwhelmed and are a little rude when the get busy.
The Common was nice for a leisurely family get-together for Sunday brunch with our son who attends UMD. It is a bit pricey and menu options are limited.
The food, setting and experience was great overall. However, the waiter not so much as he lacked personality.
The crab cake entree was very pricey but delicious. My daughter ordered the scallops and shrimp with risotto and she said the seafood was over cooked. She’s not one to complain and send food back, but she should have since the price tag was $32! I’m always disappointed when I can’t get a Diet Coke; this is a Pepsi restaurant. The others at our table seemed happy with their choices.
We were staying at the attached hotel and with the snow, and terrible traffic, we had to cancel our dinner reservations in DC and decided to give this location a try. What a gem!! Said provided outstanding service and the food was very good!! We weren’t sure what to expect but the steaks were cooked and seasoned to perfection and the prices very reasonable. Not sure if we’ll be back that way but I will certainly recommend The Common to anyone!
This was terrible. It took 20 minutes for someone to acknowledge our presence and give us water which was never refilled the entire time. Everyone was waiting for their food. At every table. The waitress was overwhelmed, said the kitchen was backed up. As we were ready to walk out the food arrived. We had flagged down the manager after 45 minutes and still no food. She apologized and gave a discount off the bill. We have always noticed how poorly run this restaurant was but overlooked it because we were with friends or had the one older waitress who is the only competent person there. We probably won’t be back.
Very convenient location to go for a meal before a Maryland game but the staff is not geared towards a pre-game dinner crowd. Even with reservations we had to wait 15 minutes for our table and then waited over 30 minutes for us all to get our first drink order. We let the waitress know we were going to the Maryland Bball game (which they were unaware of) and noted we needed to order and get out quickly (we had over an hour and a half but wanted to make sure as service was slow) Salads came 30 minutes later and orders were wrong. Entrees (minus 1) came out 30 minutes after that so we had to rush to eat. Numerous drink orders were not received or arrived just as we were leaving. This location has the advantage of location we actually can get to the game sooner if we dine elsewhere.
What happened?! This used to be a fun and reasonably priced restaurant to go to before basketball games. The service has gone way down, prices have gone up and our favorite item was taken off the menu! Sorry, but we will not be going back unless drastic improvements are made!
We live in the neighborhood and frequent the Common often —todays lunch was especially outstanding. Chicken Noodle soup tasted homemade, hearty and very flavorful. It tasted so good (fighting a cold) that I took some to “go”. The house garden salad was fresher than ever and very tasty as well. The staff (both manager and servers) were very attentive and pleasant. We love going to the Common for breakfast, lunch, happy hour and/or dinner.
Food was superb from the fancier (crab cakes and salmon) to the more everyday (club sandwich and soup). Nice wine list and beer on draft.
Easy breakfast when staying at the Marriott but staff seemed confused about reservations and where to seat people. Decent standard breakfast buffet fare. Coffee burnt and bitter. Pastries dense and not delicious. Chef making eggs did an awesome omelette.
Breakfast. Good buffet choices but the coffee wa ultra strong and bitter for me.
We had a nice dinner with excellent service by our favorite server, Hirute!
Saeed was a great server. There was a table near with 25 plus people. He did great under the circumstances
I enjoyed this restaurant. I was a little sadden by the molded bread but other than that everything was good.
We enjoyed a fun birthday lunch here. Service was great and our food was very tasty. It was a lovely occasion.
A reasonable lunch with good service. The crab cakes and burgers were good.
We loved the atmosphere but the food was mediocre the service slow. The resturant had lots of children but we couldnt get a kids menu or booster seat?
Free Parking, Food was good, Convenient. Some vegetarian options. The reason why I would return is the staff is honest. I only had one cocktail and left my American Express behind. I realized my oversight about 15min latter. The waitress turned the card in to loss prevention. I retrieved it had to sign some forms no big deal. My wife loved it she is very picky. Will go back, apparently they do a sunday brunch. May want to avoid on Saturdays during MD games given the location unless you are staying at the Marriott.
My friends and I have met here two years in a row. We enjoy being in a place that is not too loud and we can talk easily. The food is good and there are a range of options.
We had a very early dinner to celebrate my son's graduation, so were practically the only diners. Service was pleasant but not polished. Food was excellent, although the menu was a limited. Overall, we had a good experience and no big complaints, but there was nothing that really stood out. A solid restaurant for a family occasion.
Staff was excellent flexible and attention very polite and courteous special thanks to our waiter
Our party has two vegetarians and a vegan. Not a great menu selection for them - two salads and no main dishes were vegan. We made it clear to the server when ordering, yet the pasta ordered as vegan came out with cheese on it. The server didn't seem to understand the concept of vegetarian or vegan - they should be trained on such things. Everyone in our party of 4 thought the food was good.
The food was good, and service was excellent; ambient noise was quite acceptable. I set up my reservation using Open Table on the web. However, when I attempted to add two diners, the app did not respond, and I had to call to make the change.
Went for Mother's Day Brunch to make it easy for our UMD junior who was in the midst of finals. We usually avoid Mother's Day out w all noise, wait, etc. This was a fab idea, great food, not too crowded, easy free parking, nice service, yummy cocktails, try the French Martini!
As the appearance of some place special, but food and service were a big disappointment. We waited 5-10 minutes to be seated in a mostly empty restaurant, then more lags for subsequent service. $20 pasta entry was bland and served without any accompaniment (no bread, not a leaf of greens, etc). Codiner's salad was a disappointment as well.
I made reservations for brunch not realizing it stopped early, so we had lunch which was tasty.
Friendly atmosphere, excellent service, wonderful staff.
We are regulars at the Commons although not sure if this trend will continue as the prices have gotten way out of control for dinner. We invited a friend to join us and our bill for 4 dinners ( no beverages) was quite pricey. Food was good except my steak which was recommended by our server was not prepared medium rare and was way too salty
Had scheduled an 8pm dinner. Table wasn't ready, that was not a problem. While we were waiting, two ladies came from behind us, no reservation, and were seated after we were. After about ten minutes, with no waitstaff, no water, etc.. the waitstaff walked past our table to attend to the ladies who came in after us. Gave them water, answered questions about the menu, and took their order. We left, unoticed, and without regard. Once we got in the car and I opened the app to write my review, I got a notification that the restaurant had cancelled our reservation. Talking about insult on top of injury. We will not be dining there again.
Great everything! Service, food and value were all on point!
I found the restaurant by scanning OpenTable. At first, I was disappointed to discover it was inside a hotel restaurant. But when I tasted the crab soup, I got over myself land dove it. It was delicious! One of the best I've had. I ordered the salmon as my main course. I requested it blackened, which the cooks in the kitchen interpreted as over-well done. I was willing to eat the salmon-jerky. After all, I was the one who ordered a different type of preparation. But the waitress felt so bad about it, she brought me a new meal. I really appreciated that. My husband's meal looked great. I don't remember what it was. He said it was delicious and cleaned his plate. I would go there again.
Pleasant atmosphere, great service and delicious food! We plan on returning for sure.
We love coming to the Common! We always enjoy the food and atmosphere. Our favorite server is Hirute!! We ask for her every time we eat here. She is the definition of "service with a smile". Her enthusiasm for giving excellent service is refreshing and she is a good part of the reason we have such a wonderful dining experience.
You can never go wrong with the crab soup and the spinach salad at the common. I have never had a bad experience here. Great food, service and value.
My friends and I had a wonderful time because the food was very good and the ambience was wonderful.
We love this place and go often. The waitstaff is a bit uneven. Tonight our waiter, although pleasant, was slow, forgot things, and never brought the check. We finally left cash on the table and left. The waiter followed as my friend had left his phone. We had not left enough money to cover the bill and we had not planned to leave a tip. He said don't worry about it. Somehow when this place was (beautifully) remodeled, the management or wait service or whatever just simply changed. The food is very good, more creative than when it was the tiny garden cafe (or whatever it was called back then). But we go here before attending performances at The Clarice - so there's a time element. We now make reservations 2 hours before the performance, even though the venue is about 5 min away by car because you cannot count on the service bring quick or at all efficient.
