We returned to The Commodore after having written a negative review of them on Yelp. The manager contacted me and wanted us to give them another try so he sent us a $100 gift card. Our last review was mostly positive about the food, it was the service that had been a problem. Last Friday, March 13th, we went back to give the restaurant another try. As far as we know, they didn't know that we had complained in the past and were going to use the gift card from them.

This time, our server, Jossette, was very friendly, prompt and helpful. She was also very patient and knowledgable, giving us descriptions of the items on the menu. For entrees, our group ordered the Lamb Chops, the Mushroom Stroganoff with chicken and the Pan-Seared Chicken and each of the entrees was well seasoned and delicious! For dessert, we ordered the chocolate bavarian cream and the Bourbon Pecan Semi Freddo and both were wonderful! After a slight (but quickly cleared up) issue with the gift card machine, we were given our desserts on the house. We were very impressed with our visit this time and can't wait to go back.

The bistro steak was tender and very flavorful. The beets sidedish with blue cheese and pepitos was wonderful. Service and ambience were great. Will be back. Anxious to try the new pot pies.

This a really fun place for a special night out. The historic and art deco feeling of the old Commodore is very nice and food is very good if not outstanding by any means. The great thing here was our waiter (either Nick or Nate..can't remember) who was easily one of the best waitstaff I have ever encountered and actually made the evening far more special.

This was a great value for restaurant week. I am used to the prix fixe menus at other restaurants during this week, with smaller portions. The Commodore presented full portion sizes. Everything was wonderful.

We went for the restaurant week menu. It was almost perfect The tomato soup was beyond spicy. Lots of cayenne. It made me break out in a sweat. Should have been warned about that!! The 2 desserts we tried were nothing special. Our server Nick was excellent; professional, knowledgeable, and enjoyable.

Our server, Nick, was by far the best I’ve had in a long time.
Thoughtfulness, respect & an energetic personality was what he brought to the table. The evening was a delight because he made the whole experience enjoyable. Otherwise it would have been just a plain fancy restaurant.
Thanks so much :)

Outstanding service, great drinks. The seating area was cold and the food was very mediocre for the price. Our steak was overcooked and our salmon was oversalted. Dessert was unimpressive as well - looked and tasted like it was pulled out of the fridge where it’s been sitting for a few days. Our waiter Nick was amazing though and the drinks were well crafted.

The atmosphere and service are great. However, the food leaves a lot to he desired. We started out with the cheese plate and crab cakes. Those were both good. Then our table had the falafel, two steaks, creamy tomato soup, and I had the mushroom stroganoff. The falafel was dry. The steaks were cooked okay but the sides (twice baked potato and squash) were mediocre. My stroganoff was so salty I couldn't eat much of it. The salt overpowered any other flavors it had. (They did take that off our tab.)

Our drinks were good. Our server was very nice. It's a beautiful atmosphere. But for a total check of around $245 (without tip), I expect much more from the food. I would recommend going for drinks and apps only, unfortunately.

A bit of a miss on the food tonight. The relish tray we started with was quite good but the entrees were in need of seasoning and boring.

The food was adequate for the money. Our waitress kind of annoyed me. We had a bottle of wine on the table and every time I looked away, she was filling my glass. I found myself a bit shnockered by the end of the meal - I'd rather control my own alcohol intake. Overall I'd give this place a "meh" rating, and we go out for dinner to different places frequently = it usually doesn't take all that much to make us happy.

This was probably by far one of the WORST dining experiences ever! We arrived at 8:15 for our 8:15 reservation and wasn't seated until 9pm. Three of us ordered the Chef's hot chocolate that is on the menu and we were given some lame excuse that it's the old bartenders recipe and the current bartender doesn't have the ingredients. Well...take it off the menu. For the prices this joint charges I think they can afford to reprint one page on the menu. Then we asked for espresso martinis and we got another excuse that the building was too old for an espresso machine. Are you serious! Buy a Nespresso or something. Give me a break! The bartender made a coffee martini and it was basically 75% heavy cream and coffee. No decorations in the martini glass nothing. Boring boring boring. We ate our meal ahead of time because the prices are absolutely ridiculous and ordered a few apps. The french fries were nothing special. Steak fries with no seasoning. Not a fan. Everything else including the brussels sprouts and beets apps were ok. The group liked the sliders. Overall I would NEVER recommend this place in fact I will go out of my way to make sure anyone I know doesn't waste their money or time here. The ambiance is geared more towards a gray haired crowd so if you are looking for a stuffy and BORING dinner then here is your place!

Ana, We are sorry for this experience and some of the reason's our staff gave you. It is true we do not have an espresso machine but it has nothing to do with the age of the building. We take pride in our cocktail program and would like to get you back for another try. Watch for a private message hoping we can make this happen. Thank You,

The most beautiful restaurant/bar in the Twin Cities..at least that I've been to...and the food is very good. We took friends from Edina who had never been to the Commodore and our only complaint was having to abandon the dining room, where our reservation was, for the bar. The noise level in the dr is way too high for comfortable conversation; bar was much better though still plenty energetic on the rating scale. Excellent scallops for me; don't remember what others ate.

Food was very tasty but expensive. It just seems that you could serve this same quality for less. The price point makes it a place wed visit only on special occassions.

The food was good, but not excellent. What should have been hot arrived tepid on cold plates. The restaurant does not offer espresso. The Fitzgerald cocktail was very good. I would return only for cocktails; not for a meal.

We had an amazing dinner experience with great food and wonderful service. I contacted the manager regarding an unpleasant experience with the hosts found in the hallway gossiping about our table being late, and that we could not transfer a bar tab to the table, though in his response he claimed that should have been an option. While we found the food memorable, and our server professional, I felt that the lack of management presence and training diluted the experience, and for that reason I found it lacking in value as well.

Have been wanting to try the Commodore for some time, and with a friend's birthday was the perfect occasion. Service was attentive without being intrusive - drinks and food were exceptional, and the overall atmosphere was perfect for a special occasion - plan on coming back for time at the (2) spacious, but comfortable bar areas.

We went here on a Tuesday night to celebrate my wife's birthday. There are a number of dining "rooms" but we were seated in the main one. Even though it was only 2/3 full, it was quite loud. Conversation was not easy but we managed. Patrons were a mixed bag age-wise and dress, too, with some men in jackets and others in jeans. The other dining rooms offered more in the way of "retro/F Scott Fitzgerald" vibe, but those rooms featured lower tables (e.g. not specifically dining but more like cocktails and bar food). We did have to wait a little while (between 5 and 10 minutes) before our server came by, but once she did, service was exemplary with well-paced courses and a mixture of attentiveness and warmth. She had to wait on a very large group (looked like 15 or so) so obviously her attention went to them a lot. But, as I said, once we got the ball rolling, all went smoothly. We each ordered a before dinner drink (a Vesper and a mojito) and they were fine - my wife liked her mojito more than I did my Vesper. We started with the lobster deviled eggs which were tasty but there wasn't much lobster flavor to them (but they were still very good). My wife had the sea scallops and they were done to perfection (and I cook scallops a lot so I know a good sear when I see one). I had the curried cauliflower and no, I am neither a vegan or vegetarian. But it sounded intriguing and I am thrilled I ordered it because it was fantastic. One of the most creative and delicious meals I have had out in years. We finished with the brown butter cake which was a nice ending. In conclusion, other than the noise level, The Commodore is a solid spot for special occasion dining (I use special occasion due to the pricing; our meal and tip came to about $160 - we each had a glass of wine with dinner, too). My only reservation is the noise level in the main dining room. If you don't need to sit at a normal dining table, consider one of the other rooms.

The noise level in the main dining room is high enough to make conversation difficult. Too many hard surfaces reflecting sounds. Management needs to evaluate the cheapest way to install noise absorbing panels to lower the background noise.

Great history with this place, back to my parents' wedding in the 40's, meeting our friend's wife to be in the 80's. Slow roasted salmon and tenderloin were fabulous. Love the lobster deviled eggs. Charming server, tho it seemed the kitchen got backed up around desert. Birthday desert was comped- a nice gesture. Definitely will return for cocktails, dinner when we can afford it!
