Great location, excellent food in a beautiful and understated setting
2nd time there. My wife liked the specialty cocktails so we returned.
First of all, our waiter (John?) was excellent. The rest of the staff was gracious. It seemed like we had to wait an inordinate amount of time for cocktails … and then the wine. It came as we were finishing our meal. I don’t think it was our waiter’s fault: my wife saw him return to the bar multiple times to check & our drinks weren’t ready. And it wasn’t even crowded.
I had the spare rib. Tasty but tiny. I wound up having a snack when I got home. The dessert menu seemed uninteresting. How about a piece of cake?
Don’t get me wrong. I had a good time & enjoyed the experience, but you probably could’ve sold a couple more drinks if your bartender was on the ball.
Very good food. We would have like to have eaten in front of the chef but didn’t know it was an option until it was too late to move.
Otherwise it was an excellent restaurant and the food was extraordinary. Good value cause even though on the more expensive side of restaurants the entrees were very good large size.
Always a treat to dine at the commissary. Lovely service and excellent menu. Will be back!
Delicious dinner of octopus. Even if the thought creeps you out, you should try it.
The food was not anything extra special, but when it was all said and done the four of us ladies decided that the 'Plates to Share' was a rip-off.
Perfect. Chef and Tessa have a great thing going at The Commissary. Canary Islands octopus is must order. Service is always excellent reflecting good hires and training. Cocktails are sublime.
We went to celebrate a special occasion and were treated exceptionally well by a highly professional and friendly staff. The food, wine and cocktails were excellent.
When all you talk about during dinner is how amazing the food is, from presentation to flavor, and nothing else matters at that moment , not even work or family or personal drama, you know the place is the real deal and you feel like you have reached a state of nirvana. That’s how it felt like being at The Commissary for two hours. Thank you for a fabulous and unforgettable culinary experience.
Great. The new chef if a winner
We went to the Commissary to celebrate a friends birthday. They provided menus with a special notation printed on top stating this was a celebratory birthday meal for "Fred,"-a really classy touch. The service was excellent, all four meals outstandingly prepared and presented. This was the second time we visited the Commissary-both were outstanding. And, the location in the middle of the Presidio is special.
Went here for a belated Valentine's day celebration and it was just perfect for such an occasion. The best meal we've had in long time. The things we enjoyed the most were the cocktails, the atmosphere, the cheese fritters, and the chocolate souffle. We also very much enjoyed the whole red snapper and the asparagus and cauliflower tlacoyo. Finally by sitting at the bar area near the kitchen we were able to see all the ins and outs of how the food was being prepared, and it was very interesting to watch. I am already looking forward to our next visit.
We were able to sit at the counter in the kitchen. What a wonderful experience!! My husband had the potato crusted sea bass. He said it was pretty much perfect. I had the short ribs and they were terrific. The sauce was incredible. To finish we shared the chocolate souffle. A great way to end such a delicious meal. Service is excellent.
Fish was a bit dry-touch over cooked
Bread and goat mousse: -wish bread was lighter and more got mousse
Buratta was great.
Dessert station at observation bar has chef spray Non-stick oil at diner.
Churro dessert was amazing.
Waiter mixed up our teas when we re-ordered otherwise service was top notch . Very pleasant staff and observation kitchen is really fun.
Noise level was good given we were sitting at the bar.
They called two days in advance to see what we were celebrating. When we arrived, the menu was customized for the occasion, making it really special. The birthday boy even received dessert. Thank you!
The service sucked but we really enjoyed the food. The fried cheese balls with truffle honey, the papas bravas, and the octopus were amazing. The chocolate pasta was too heavy - almost doughy and the short ribs were a bit tough - a steak would have tasted better if one wanted beef. The service was very slow. We were there almost an hour before the waiter took our order and that was only after we complained. I will return again but the service is much better at the chef’s counter where I’ve sat before.
Prix Fixe Valentines menu. All of the courses amazing - but veal course was stone cold when it was presented and pasta course just lukewarm.
Timing on courses extremely off. We waited 20 for two chocolate dipped strawberries.
The Commissary is one of our favorite restaurants. Tonight service and plating was just lackadaisical and uninspired.
We want to love this place, and have had pretty good experiences here in the past. The setting is great, interior design beautiful modern/rustic, and the location on the Parade Ground in the Presidio can’t be beat. However, this was a birthday celebration and our meal was a fiasco. We waited 50 minutes before they brought our glass of wine and refilled our water glasses! We sat with a lonely white plate, no water, no wine, no bread. No waiter, and certainly not the Maitre d ever looked our way. The food was good, but quite modest. The only veggie option was a tiny portion of cauliflower. Tweezer food. This seems inexcusable for a high end restaurant in the Bay Area where there are so many creative, imaginative and filling vegetarian and even vegan dinner options. We would appreciate a response from The Commissary.
This was our 4th visit to the Commissary since it opened.
Although they gave us champagne on the house for our anniversary which was nice, the service is still as lacking as it was when they first opened. Chaotic service: too many different servers, had to ask 3 times for ice (from the same server) and no attempt to split a shared plate.
The food is only average especially given the prices. The menu is very limited-only 4 mains. The menu descriptions were almost unintelligible and I speak both Spanish and French.
Although the location is pleasant, I could not recommend this restaurant.
Same feeling about Arguello, Tracy des Jardin's other Presidio restaurant. Why does she have 2 restaurants in the Presidio? Shouldn't other owners get a chance???
We shared a small bite. I had an appetizer and a main course, and left the restaurant hungry and had to eat again. Our waiter seemed to be juggling too many tables, forgot details, and didn’t answer questions well. I dine out quite a bit, and can’t remember being this disappointed elsewhere. The ambiance was nice.
The kitchen seating at The Commissary is a valuable opportunity to be able to see how team functions. Chef has talented people and a creative approach that makes Latin food themes work in a higher volume but intimate atmosphere. Kelly our server is a pro and we enjoyed exemplary service from he and his shadow Nelson, (very good) . It is always a privilege to watch Tessa drive the service and we so enjoy being the beneficiaries of her expertise. The winter menu is full of surprise flavor and healthy choices. As good as it gets in SF.
Staff where amazing and the food was sublime.
The food is excellent and very creative. I do think it's a bit pricey, so the value is moderate.
Cocktails and food were great. Service was friendly but definitely on the slow side. Beautiful dining room with easy street parking!
We had a wonderful multi-generational dinner at The Commissary after some walking and sight-seeing in the Presidio and near Fort Point. Our waiter was a delightful young man. The wine selection was very nice, and we indulged in a bottle of Billecart-Salmon Champagne and two bottles of Radio-Coteau Pinot Noir. Appetizers, crab soup, and branzino were very good. We ordered a sorbet for dessert which was OK - very icy and redolent of strong liquor.
The building is classy and full of history. It's a very special place. We tethered our Golden Retriever to the porch and she patiently waited for us, with several diners giving her lots of love.
The only downside was the noise level. It was very loud and bustling and my father struggled to follow the conversation. I too was struggling at times.
The Commissary awed and amazed us in so many ways. We sat in the cozy Exhibition Kitchen area and were thrilled to get to see the kitchen in motion preparing all these delicious dishes. The service was gracious and not cloying. Love the atmosphere in the old Presidio building. All the dishes we tried were stupendous from the Seared Ahi to the Octopus. We also tried the Chocolate and Truffle Pasta was dreamy and the Pork Chop and Porchetta dish was sublime.
We can't wait to return to the commissary!
It worked well. The octopus appetizer was very tasty.
The sommelier was super nice and gracious.
Main dishes were delicious. Appetizers a bit less interesting.
Love the location and décor!
It was a perfect date at kitchen seating watching where the magic happens. Loved it
Welcoming, warm historic building in a National Park near the waterfront in the middle of San Francisco, with attentive service and delicious food with a Spanish bent. Don't miss the fresh, warm baked bread with the most delicious soft spreadable cheese and green olives. The list of temperanillo and albarino wines are terrific. House made grapefruit sorbet was the perfect refreshing finish.
Truly Beautiful and delicious food. Chef Rogelio is so creative, friendly, and was appreciative of us as customers! We sat at the bar which surrounds the open kitchen where you can watch all the food being prepared and cooked. Kitchen staff and wait staff were beyond attentive. I don’t think I’ve ever experienced customer service this superb. There is the added plus that the restaurant is in the Presidio which makes for a beautiful location and easy parking. I recommend sitting at the “front row” bar to watch the chef and his staff!
Went for a birthday dinner. The restaurant customized our menus with a birthday wish which was a wonderful, personal touch! We were impressed with every dish we tried. Delicious and beautifully presented. It was definitely a meal to remember!
Nice location in the Presidio, lovely interior, fabulous food, really nice staff, but too many interrupting check-ins while eating, got very loud like all SF restaurants so can’t recommend it for conversation/date, sit at Bar so you can talk, fun to watch food prepared
Horrible service, mediocre food at an expensive price.
Exceedingly interesting food creatively served. A good but slightly expensive wine list. A noise level which did not prevent conversation often intruded.
The very best attribute of The Commissary is the food was truly outstanding!!! Parking for the restaurant must be the easiest in San Francisco!!! We visited in the middle of the week and arrived for one of the earlier sittings and were seated promptly. The hostess and waiters were very pleasant. However, once our initial orders were taken there seemed to be long lapses of inattentiveness between the course servings. However, as mentioned before, every menu choice we selected was delicious!!!! The atmosphere was incongruous to the exquisite meals served. The large open dining room appeared casual, but the dishes were elegant. The only other comment to be made is we were a party of five. Three people were not drinking anything alcoholic, just four limeades. The other two diners had one beer and two glasses of wine. The total for all these drinks came to $61.
I can’t say enough about the staff and their efforts to make the every day diner such an experience that it’d be one to write home about and I believe this is such a one as to be the thing we are all looking for. It was our exception for making a late reservation and I appreciate their attempts to help make up for our purchase. TAking the money first is garbage
The food was good, but not nearly worth the price tag. Tiny portions and just not excellent enough to justify the price.
It was a 5-course pre-fixe menu for NYE. Every course was delectable. Gorgeous environment and spacious. There was even live music for the special evening. And the location in The Presidio makes it even more special!
