The Class Act
The Class Act is convenient to our home, and is one of the few places we can count on to be open on a weekend. It’s also close to the airport, and on this night my husband was returning from a business trip, so I met him at The Class Act for dinner. Service is always good — it is a learning/practice experience for students planning on going into the food industry, so the servers are always attentive. Our salads (house salad) were very flavorful, generously portioned, and the vinaigrette was tasty. The presentation would have been better if the salad was on a slightly larger plate — it was difficult to eat without losing a few leaves off the plate. My husband had the scallop entree — excellent. I had the lobster and house-made goat cheese ravioli dish; our server told me that the sauce was thin rather than thick, and that was true. The dish was rather more of a soup than an entree, which I did not expect. That being said, the raviolis were outstanding. The dessert (which was, I think, the best part of the meal) was a rhubarb “crisp,” but instead of a heavy pastry, the dessert was modestly sized and mostly rhubarb — it was absolutely delicious. The wine selection for dinner was lovely.
I observed to my dining companions, after the delightful amuse bouche, and refreshing salad, just as our well-presented entrees were given to us, that we were looking at $150 a plate in New York, at least.
The steaks were burnt and very tough not very flavorful. The desert was frozen. This experience did not live up to the hype.
Always a good go to with good food and service.
A very good restaurant. The food was great and service was good overall I would recommend as a business meal or date.
Awesome craft cocktails to start - prohibition era or inventive, the cocktail program here just rocks - we enjoyed a couple of Mezcal-Rita’s in the outdoor area before dinner. Ribeye was grilled perfectly medium rare, bit of a throwback with a relatively heavy mushroom demi- but it worked well in the end. Tad surprised that the scallops main wasn’t a bit more substantial - either a bit more size among the three included scallops, or a few more of them would have been perfect. I’m very rarely a “desert person”, however the pastry chef’s whipped tahini paired with the chocolate cake, ginger syrup and macaroons causes me to rethink that position. If more deserts in the world featured that whipped tahini I’d readily become a desert person!
We met to eat and talk together as a book club before attending the Out Loud! author presentation. We really enjoyed the ambiance of the Class Act so that we could actually talk to each other without having to shout over sports bars' televisions or bumping music! The food was superb, as always! We had quite a range of orders, from appetizers to full-blown meals with wine. The service is outstanding, with regular inquiries for additional service, but not too many.
We had a fun Sunday birthday celebration there. I recommend it highly! Our waiter, Chance, was great and made the experience even better!
Every aspect of our visit was perfect. The food was delicious and the staff was friendly, knowledgeable and efficient. I would highly recommend the restaurant to anyone who would like a relaxing day out.
Food was very overpriced for quality. Worst hummus I’ve ever eaten.
Excellent place to have a nice evening. Great food, great service. The party room was a little noisy next to us but what do you do?
All of our expectations were far surpassed. The service was prompt and courteous. The food was amazing. It was our anniversary, and to make the evening special our deserts were on the house. We left feeling very special - just what we had in mind for a very special occasion.
This was a reservation for supper for prom and 4 pm was what was available to still attend prom and have a dinner reservation so we took that time frame. No one stated that Because we arrived fifteen minutes early, we were required to have breakfast. Rather than telling us that or having us wait, we were seated, and provided brunch/ breakfast which was rather shocking. Being high schoolers we did not complain yet it was somewhat disappointing. The food was excellent. However, it was Certainly not the experience my parents had signed us up for or what we were expecting. We both wish we could have had this meal again about 5 am when we had caught our fourth or fifth wind after everything including the after prom party and did not want to go to sleep or feel tired!! Excellent everything; we just expected supper with a supper reservation that’s all! The food and service was fantastic as was the environment. This environment was perfect for my gorgeous date who was a knock out in her black dress with silver glitzy heels and a beautiful smile that lights up a room when she enters it. She is a great friend to have and I’d highly recommend taking your friends to Class Act too!
The food was good but would have expected higher grade for a Mothers Day weekend. (Steaks, fish choices, baked potato), so disappointed on that level. VERY disappointed in your parking situation. Mom and I are both on canes, I dropped mom off at the door and then I had to walk from the opposite end of the parking lot furthest from the door. You should have free valet parking offered. Your obviously set up for the young, due to parking and walking distance to restaurant. The pricing however is set up for the older crowd, which is okay. I will not recommend this restaurant because most of my friends are older and you are just not set up for that particular crowd. Too bad, because the older crowd is the crowd with the funds to afford what you offer. I would still offer steaks, ribs, fish, baked potato + for more options. The brunch thing after 1PM is not a good plan. Food did tasted good so kudos to the chef and our service was good so kudos to her as well.
One of the best meals we have had in Iowa!!
if you are in need a special meal go here. especially recommend the monthly Passport dinners.
Excellent food and friendly staff. Variety of items on menu.
Excellent food, good drinks menu, and nice environment. We’ll be back!
Food and service were excellent. Everyone in our group loved their food. Dessert was excellent as well!
The service was slow. The server did not smile or seem engaged with the guests. It took at least 15 minutes before we were able to order. We were in a private room and for a while I thought maybe the server was not going to return to our room. She did not refill water glasses when they were full. She did not offer to tell us the specials or soup of the day before prompted. She asked us if we wanted dessert before all guests were completed with their meal. She brought out the check before all guests completed their meal and before asked for the check. It was a formal lunch hosting 2 high-ranking visitors from China and I was disappointed with the service which is normally above standard. This was clearly below from the examples I just shared.
The food was of very good quality and everyone enjoyed the food they ordered. No complaints on food quality.
We decided to have breakfast on Sunday morning. The food, as always was excellent but the service was below standards. Our waitress gave us the impression she had better things to do than her job.
Wonderful concept to do passport theme meals around the globe! Creative and delicious, the class act never disappoints!
Excellent Food and Excellent Service and the Atmosphere was perfect!
We stopped by The Class Act on our way home from a trip to Minneapolis. The Class Act has an advantage for us over a lot of Cedar Rapids restaurants in that it is open 7 days a week, and it happens to be close to our home. We had not been in awhile, and we had the impression that the service and food have stepped up a notch. Service was wonderful — it is a learning experience for the servers, so one has to take that into account. The menu was not huge, but was ambitious, and every well executed. Wine list is very interesting and varied. Well worth a visit!
Delicious! Cocktails were excellent, the amuse bouche was delightful, every dish that was served was impeccable: the filet mignon, the scallops & the salmon. Absolutely worth going out of your way for.
Great food for restaurant week!!!
Great atmosphere. We had a private area for our get-together. Great service. Food may have taken a little longer than expected, but it was worth it. Friendly staff. We would do it again. And would highly recommend brunch.
They have a monthly country-themed Fixed-price menu that is always interesting.
The students have become the masters!
The food was amazing and server was attentive, knowledgeable, and personable!
We were extremely happy with the whole experience!
My husband and I enjoyed an excellent meal at the Class Act. It is like a hidden gem. We only live 20 minutes away and will come back often.
We had a small family 'reunion' in the restaurant and it was perfect for conversation. The food was excellent, the menu interesting, and the service was extraordinary.
The student made amuse bouche was AMAZING. I could have eaten a whole plate!
We've been fortunate enough to dine in many upscale restaurants. We rank the Class Act Restaurant as a hidden gem, with superior service, and delicious menu items. Our complete dining experience was outstanding, at cost-wise, a half-to-third of what we'd pay in a large city. We'll be back soon, and have absolutely no hesitation in recommending this restaurant!
I have never had a poor meal or service at the restaurant ,Hotel Kirkwood ,and the Banquet Facility's. All are top notch , as a matter of fact we book all of our meetings there also.
Kirkwood's Class Act Restaurant has always felt elegant but friendly for an afternoon gathering or a romantic dinner. The service is excellent and the menu although small has great variety.
The prices are good given the service and ambiance.
Our Valentine's dinner was exceptional. My wife had the quail and I had the ribeye, both done to perfection. Our server was very attentive, polite and professional. He was at our table often enough, but too often to be bothersome. I can't wait to go back.
The service was flawless and the food was both tasty and different
Terrific food and service. Totally excellent drinks, beer and wine. We had a group of eight in a semi-private section and we could talk normally and still be heard. Decor is modern but comfortable with lighting that was warm and inviting. All dinners came with a small appetizer and dessert. Menu was small but with a nice variety of appetizers, salads, entrees and desserts. Many items are made from local (Iowa) sources. Very nice dining experience. We will definitely be back.
The food was great and the atmosphere even better. We plan to make it a regular date night.
Delicious food, great atmosphere. Really enjoyable experience. Pricey, but i think it was worth it.
