The Chop House - Grand Rapids Ratings and Reviews
The Chop House is hands down our favorite place in Grand Rapids for a special occasion. Their attentive service makes you feel like you’re the only person in the restaurant and the food is exceptionally delicious. We will continue to make The Chop House our go-to place for celebrations.
Everything was good with one exception, my Beef Wellington was overcooked. I had asked for something towards "medium well" and the waitress said she wasn't sure the kitchen could do it. Nothing more was said and when my entree came out is was way past medium well to well done +. And I think they have microwaved it because the meat was scalding hot when it arrived. I should have sent it back but foolishly did not because it would have taken too long. Terrible waste of a $50 entree. They did offer us desert on the house but after the fact is never really compensation for something poorly done.
First Off, I want to say I've eaten at the chop house at least 10-15 times. Typically the food is excellent, the only reason I'm leaving this review is I called to talk to the manager 2 times and was left on hold so long I just gave up. I took my wife and 7 others for my wife's 50th birthday, like I said, typically its good so I thought she would enjoy this. I think I got an off night. The initial service started off slow and continued down the same path. The Sancerre white wine was served at room temp, normally I can deal with it and move on. I actually got up multiple times to walk across the room to pour the wine for my guests, again, I can deal with it. The seafood towers (chilled appetizers) were less than impressive, the lobster literally was like rubber and tasteless. I notice the majority of it went uneaten. The oysters were just ok and the crab cocktail was spilled all over the ice. We were done with this and our main orders were not even taken. I had the bone in filet as did my daughter, we both asked for medium, hers looked like I should have stabbed it to ensure it was dead, she didn't eat it, mine was cold, literally cold. I've never had a steak delivered to the table cold before. My wife could see I was visibly not happy and I didn't want to create an issue at the table so I let it go, it was her night, her celebration. I noticed others had pretty much the same sort of issues as I noticed a lot of food being pushed around the plates but not really consumed. On a positive note, the Caymus wine was excellent, I did have to get up and pour this for our guests as well. We finished up, I paid the bill and we went across the street to another (competitor) for an after-dinner drink. It was interesting as most of the crowd was interested in snacks (appetizers) at the bar, that pretty much told me everyone had the same experience. The general consensus, the restaurant had an off night, for over $1,300 you don't expect an off night.
I wanted to treat myself to a good steak for my birthday. I wasn't disappointed. I got the cowboy steak, yes it was priced high but it was worth it. They ate their steaks and it melts in your mouth. Amazing food. I'll be going back for sure before my birthday. If I'm lucky maybe even take a girl on a date there someday.
both steaks were well undercooked, and both sent back to kitchen.
service was great and took 1 steak off bill
steak was flavorless, no salt or pepper seasoned. employee came with a pepper grinder as if it was a salad.
Steak was grey, and not pleasing to the eye.
There were no juices coming from the steak.
The server told us the restaurant was trying to be unique in different ways. my advice, don't try and fix something that isn't broken. medium rare, means medium rare, not your own take on medium rare. if you tell me its going to be a red cool center, I still expect the outside of the steak to be hot.
I have had a lot of $50-$70 steaks In my life and this is not one of them. The saving grace was the service. TJ our server was fantastic, and the dining manager was apologetic.
Very fancy restaurant for special occasions. Don’t think you can spend less than 50 dollars on each person. The birthday special is a really good deal, would highly recommend going on your birthday. Beautiful place with top class performance. Our steaks were amazing.
The restaurant was nice however unlike the Ann Arbor location where Chop House and La Dulce Vita are separate (and the latter had two floors), in GR these are in the same restaurant with the desert place on the bottom floor. (Also the cozy couches and chairs have been replaced by tables to accommodate more customers downstairs). However that means that there is not a separate area for the cigar bar and when we walked in at about 9:00 p.m. just to grab a dessert and drinks the smoking had already started and we were not willing to sit downstairs due to the strong smoke. However, in sitting upstairs as close to the door as possible and as far away from the smoking as possible we could still smell the cigars and is not something I would recommend for dining or for dessert and drinks. Hostess was nice, our server/ bartender Catherine was EXCELLENT, competent, knowledgeable, and friendly. We enjoyed the Spanish coffee. Our vanilla bean creme brulee was still cold from the fridge and was thicker than creme brulees we have had before. Also it was very light on the vanilla flavor. The special gingerbread cake was the driest cake that I had ever had and is not something that I recommend ... only the sauce in the middle was worth noting. I'm not sure we will be back due to the smoke and low quality of food for the price. The staff were the shining note of our visit.
We have had great experiences at The Chop House GR in the past however this Christmas Eve was a huge disappointment. We made a reservation way back in August or September for Christmas Eve. When we arrived we were seated in the basement normally occupied by the Cigar Bar. The lingering cigar smell was not pleasant and the tables appeared to be brought in from a rental company and were very unstable. Our server was pleasant but the experience had already started in a bad way. The food was good but the ambiance was a put off. We should have asked to be reseated but we didn't. Our mistake. We may return for special occasions but we will insist on waiting for an appropriate table.
As we are in the Grand Rapids area for Christmas, we have Christmas Eve dinner with you and have for many years. It has ALWAYS been a highlight of our holiday. The entire experience is one we look forward to...the ambience, the attentive staff, and of course the MEAL!! Once again, accept our gratitude for a memorable evening!!
My boyfriend and I were very unsatisfied with the food we received. He ordered his beef Wellington to be cooked to 131 degrees and his request was no where near the mark. His steak came out blue and still cold in the middle he said. Also the pastry on the outside of his Wellington was not crispy. I also had requested that my venison be cooked medium well and it was clearly cooked to medium rare. The staff was polite and our waiter offered multiple times to give my boyfriend a new dish so he would be satisfied. The manger also came over to apologize more than once and see if he could help us. We were told by the waiter that the restaurant had a different scale they used to measure how done the meat was other than internal temperature. So if someone asked for a steak cooked medium the chef would cook it to what their standard for medium was. Medium for them was rare to most people. We were confused why no one told us this while we were giving our requests to how we liked our meat cooked.
Date night at the Chop House. Great experience here. Very nice atmosphere. Wait staff was awesome. Food was great. Price was high. I knew going there would be expensive. But $50 for one steak with no side dishes ncluded I thought was high priced. Probably not a return customer unless some else is paying the tab.
Excellent food, service, ambiance and wine selection. A particularly great value on the day of your birthday, where you receive 50% off the price of your food order for two (this percentage decreases with a larger group size). Alcohol is excluded from this discount but the selection is great!
We had an awesome waitress, a perfectly cooked steak and the dessert plate even had the words "Happy Birthday" written in chocolate for an added touch. We have been to the Chop House many times and it is the #1 place to eat on our list. We have visited other 4 star/5 star restaurants and Chop House is still on top!
Was initially concerned from a few negative reviews, but decided to go anyway, and I’m SO glad we did. The food was absolutely amazing. Everything was on point, including the service. Not too noisy, even at 7pm on Friday, but not too quiet that you worry about people hearing your conversation. We will be returning, guaranteed.
Unfortunately, cigar smoke was in the air and our server acknowledged and apologized for it upon greeting us (cigar lounge party downstairs). Food and service was very good but to endure the cigar stench tainted our evening. We understand that some people actually like the smell but for us, that dining experience costs way too much $$$ to go home with slight headaches and smelly clothes and hair. There are other great dining options where there is no risk of dining in cigar smoke—-we’ll stick with those in the future.
