The Chop House - Ann Arbor Ratings and Reviews
This was an anniversary dinner and also restaurant week. We ordered restaurant week fixed menu choice. The salad was good, nothing special though. The steak was not a cut normally offered. It was done nicely, tender and flavorful, served with mashed potatoes and carrots. This main course was presented well, decent but not noteworthy. The dessert was quite nice and delicious. We had eaten here in years past and felt this was not up to what we remembered. Don't know if it was because we chose the restaurant week menu? Although we had gone with the restaurant week menu one time many years ago and my recollection is something finer. It also felt like they had crowded in more tables for the restaurant week crowd. (It was more crowded than usual and we had to wait about 20 minutes for our reserved table. The service was fabulous. I would not go back on restaurant week. I have a feeling the food is a step up from the regular menu and the crowd a step down.
Once more, we were rewarded with a wonderful birthday meal at the Chop House. From the perfectly dressed kale salad, house salad and lobster bisque to the tuna (huge portion beautifully seasoned and cooked) and the most amazing crab and lobster cakes we were pleased. Sides included lovely Brussels sprouts, sautéed mushrooms and spoon bread, with portions so large we’ll enjoy some for the next two meals. The Chop House tops this off with very professional unobtrusive staff ( oh, and don’t forget the tasty Zingerman’s breads); we have a favorite server now, Shawn, who is personable, knowledgeable and efficient. Favorite Ann Arbor restaurant.
We went for their restaurant week menu, which was excellent. It’s a very romantic setting, but it felt comfortable. Our server was attentive and fun. It is a very pricey establishment when it isn’t restaurant week, so it’s certainly a “special occasion” type of place, but they do make it feel special.
First time diners... Service was impeccable and our waitress, Anissa, was top notch! I had filet, and my husband had porterhouse. Both were cooked perfectly and very delicious. We got the au gratin potatoes and the mac and cheese. We felt the Mac and cheese was dry, and potatoes were a little bland, but the portions were huge. $160 bill cut in half because we dined on his birthday. I would gladly pay $80 again if I'm getting different sides, but would not pay $160.
The décor of Chop House is elegant and tasteful. My oysters on the half-shell were
fresh and succulent.
My entrée selection of Dover Sole was excellent. My Grandaughter selected scallops
as her main dish along with the Mac and Cheese side....she enjoyed,
We will return.......
Due to the weather people were slowly leaving, causing our seating to be half an hour after our reservation.
The service was the normal high quality, the food was high quality as normal, and the desserts were spectacular, as normal.
The price of entrees has continued to climb, with two entrees, a shrimp cocktail, and two sides roughly 180 dollars before the birthday discount.
Desserts are still reasonably priced, I highly recommend popping into Le Dulce Vita for desserts.
Aspects I enjoyed: a dimmer level of brightness inside with candlelight, friendly waiters who gave great recommendations, tablet menus with pictures of every dish, food that came out way faster than expected (20 ish minutes)
The food was very tasty and what you would expect for a fancy restaurant. Portions for most dishes seemed to be enough to make you full. The Porterhouse steak was cooked expertly and was delicious. Wine menu had many selections
Aspects that one might not enjoy: sides are ordered and charged separately (do not come with entrees), men's (maybe women's too) restroom must be accessed by walking through cigar lounge so you might get smoke smell on clothes
I have been to this restaurant many times but was very disappointed with my last visit. My reservation was made months in advance and I confirmed it with the restaurant several times before arriving on the 31st of December. Upon our arrival, we were put in the smoke smelling basement in a banquet room by ourselves. (I had requested to be in the front of the restaurant during my confirmations. I did not ever think that they would seat us in the basement.) I asked for the manager several times but she never took the time to come and speak with me. Our bill with tip was over $600 and the manager could not come to talk to me. Our server was very attentive and understanding... thank goodness. But I will not be spending my money at the Chop House again!
I have to say that the Cowboy steak was the best food experience I have ever had!! My kids and I come here every Christmas Eve, there were no openings this year however so we did get a reservation for New Year's Eve. There was an electrical issue which was very distracting. The Menu has changed which was disappointing.... But.....The food as always was beyond exceptional!
Definitely lived up to the stellar reviews. We had french onion soup, brussels sprouts, DELICIOUS steak and amazing bread pudding. Great food, excellent service (thank you Joe!) and a delightful 50% off on your birthday. Definitely worth the drive and will be returning!
When we are visiting family in AA from San Francisco, now Chicago, during the holidays or for family birthdays, we take our family to The Chop House as it is one of the nicest restaurants in AA. We do this knowing that the steaks are way overpriced for mediocre meat quality. They don't even have dry-aged meat... During this year's Christmas Eve, we went back. The lights in our section, near the kitchen was flickering most of the night. It kept going from bright to really dark and became very unpleasant after the first 10 mins or so. The waiter explained its because the building is old. Hmm... I would say this building is no older than any other building on Main St and that's not an excuse for an expensive restaurant to have flickering light issues. Anyway, this time, we finally agreed that we would prefer to drive somewhere further for better food and better value in the future.
Last year we had Christmas Eve dinner at the Chop House and it was amazing, so we decided to go again. This time our server was great, but we were not as pleased with the food for the high price. Additionally when I made the reservation, I requested a seat by the window but we could not get near the window since we had two adults and one child. The only open table near the window was for two seats. The high top by the other window on the bar side was open, but that ambiance isn't nearly as nice and it was next to the door which was not desirable because it was freezing outside. Overall our dinner experience was pleasant, but we will pick a different place for next year.
Food and Service outstanding, have dined here several times and have never disappointed. We were served desert in the La Dolce Vita area of the restaurant, while desert was very good the seating area could be buffed up a bit...Having a coat rack in the empty private room with hangars on floor, seat heights mismatched to serving table isn't what is expected for this caliber of a restaurant. Still highly recommend.
Excellent service, staff did not hover around the table but were watchful. We never had to wait to have our drinks refreshed. The appetizers were very well plated and delicious, I would highly recommend the foie gras. As always our main dishes were cooked perfectly. The add on availability to the steaks is a very nice touch and was a very welcome addition to the plate. The wine selection is not tremendous, but is well rounded. There are bottles and glasses that fit every taste and budget. Overall, an amazing way to spend a birthday dinner. This is our third time eating here and we have never been disappointed.
Once again the Chop House lives up to its reputation for fancy special occasion dining. Some time in the past couple of years they found a chef who knows how to prepare seafood, so as our dining habits have changed we can still anticipate a wonderful meal here. Because of its excellence the service personnel are high quality; accessible without being intrusive, engaging and knowledgeable. The menu, on an iPad, also enables you to see the dishes you are considering, as well as the ingredients. We enjoyed lobster bisque, tune, crab and lobster cakes, as well as an enormous baked potato. In past years, I’ve also enjoyed the venison, filet, and the wonderful chopped salad.
Great ambiance, amazing food, and great service. Only classic American fine dining establishment in Ann Arbor.
Great options for vegetarians and fish eaters. The sides are as delicious as the main courses and I highly recommend the Mac and cheese and Parmesan asparagus. For the main don’t miss out on the soft and delicate Dover sole- to die for
We went for out for my birthday and it was amazing! One of the best meals we had ever had. The food was superb and perfectly prepared and the service was fantastic. Even the cocktails and dessert (we got the Meyer lemon bar in the lounge) was just fantastic. We left full (with leftovers!) and very very happy. We will definitely be back!
