The service is spotty; however the food and prices are excellent. The trout was particularly outstanding - very fresh and crispy-skinned. Our friends also enjoyed the shrimp and grits and the vegetarian dish as well as the tomato stack appetizer. I've also had the strip steak here before, and everything is a great value. They just need to train their staff better, though they are pleasant.
Food was mediocre except for the grilled grouper. That was excellent. Waiter tried hard but seemed overwhelmed at times. He was a nice young man. Decor of restaurant was very very outdated. It needs a total remodeling. Food grade was high (97.5) which is good.
Don't waste your time and money. Poor service, bad ambiance, ok food = don't go back. We'd heard that the chef was good but we were not prepared for the really bad service and low level ambiance. The Chestnut Grille is simply a small white room with really old fashioned wall paper at the top, bad lighting, fake small candle on the table and bad acoustics. Our waitress was either very new & badly trained or just incompetent (sorry Karla); couldn't pour out our martinis out of a shaker without spilling it all over the table; didn't offer to pour our wine; never refilled our water; brought the entree before we were finished with appetizers; didn't replace used silverware that she took away with our appetizer plates....and on and on. The food was actually not bad but it just couldn't make up for all the rest.
Due to hosting a banquet that evening, the experience for those with individual reservations was terrible. They need to decide whether they are an event venue or a public restaurant - not try to do both. Length of wait was unacceptable for the number of tables being served. Food was mediocre.
Received a call from Jill the evening before, restaurant side closed 4 special event. She noted we could sit bar side with same menu. That was okay with us. Didn't seem to be any communication between Jill and bar staff. Bar staff was only serving bar menu. Restaurant manager (Laurie) got involved and put Jill to work to fulfill our needs. Jill got chef to make our requested dinners; my wife's dinner okay, my pork chop was small, thin and to well done.

Our last visit with friends was remarkably good. Sometimes the service here can be a bit unpolished (college kids?), but our server, Alex, was excellent. The trout dish and the vegetable dish with tempeh were both 9 out of 10 and the shrimp and grits perhaps a 7 or 8. If you are looking for quality food at very reasonable prices and a quiet night out, this is the place.
Very historic, but nothing else. Food OK, friends plated dishes were cold and had to send back. Wait staff friendly but not very experienced for a restaurant that wants to be upscale. We tried it (again) because of new chef. There are other places so much better in Blowing Rock.
We were there for the final performance of the Charles Ellis trio. Booked well in advance. By our 8pm reservation, the kitchen had already run out of over half the entrees even though they had know the restaurant was completely booked for over 2 weeks. We ended up ordering prime rib as neither of our preferred selections were available. Meat wa as tough as shoe leather. I ate about half. My husband didn't even eat that much. All they offered to do was reduce our meal price by 20%! I even left my phone number at the front desk of the hotel to have the manger contact me. Still haven't heard anything. Lots of wait staff issues both mornings at breakfast as well.
Was told due to lack of staff that evening that they had to cancel our reservation. I spoke to the manager and he said we could sit in bar and order off the full menu. When we got there, there were only SIX people in the entire restaurant.
We were a little wary as some reviews were not great, but took a chance because the more recent ones were favorable. We were able to eat outside on the patio, which was extremely charming and all seven tables were occupied. The food was fabulous! Our table had shrimp and grits, teriyaki salmon, crispy braised pork and a soup and salad. The pork was outstanding, really delicious and complimented by the side of creamy polenta we ordered. I would definitely recommend this restaurant for the food and I thought their prices were very reasonable. I can see how people would have issues with the indoor dining as it is dark and quite large, therefore would feel empty without significant diners but I think it could be quite inviting in winter with a fire.
We stayed at the Green Park Inn 32 years ago on our honeymoon. We decided to eat there while visiting the area to walk down "Memory Lane." The restaurant looked quite different but we loved the food and the service and we were not disappointed to have made the effort to be there again.
On our visit during the week, the restaurant was quiet ( which we liked ). They had an extensive wine list, the food was EXCELLENT, and the service also excellent. My wife asked a lot of questions about this Historic Inn. We were given detailed explanations and brochures.
Overall had an enjoyable evening.
We have dined at the Chestnut grille on every weekend visit we make to blowing rock since it opened. We return because the food is fantastic and reasonably priced for food of this quality.
The service is always wonderful. We are happy that the traffic has picked up as we know there are many great restaurants in the area for the number of high end diners. We are hoping it will be around a long long time as we will continue to eat here on every visit to blowing Rock which is about 3-4 per year!
The Chestnut Grille continues the tradition of serving great food in a setting that brings the hospitality and ambience of the early 20th century into the present. The Blue Ridge Mountain setting of the well preserved historic building provides a relaxing setting for dining and enjoyment of excellent food. The wait staff is attentive, approprately personable, and quite efficient. The menu offers a wide range of choices that our family always have found to be excellent. I always look forward to visiting the Grille when there is live jazz and traditional popular music playing in the adjacent foyer.
The food was tasty, but they need to improve the plating. Our waitress needed more training. I had to ask twice for a fork for dessert, and for a cup for my tea.
There was a nice band, but it was a little hard to hear each other.
I was disappointed until the check arrived. The food was under priced!
Restaurant not prepared for diners. They were very slow in bringing out food to buffet. Drinks were also very delayed. Had to wait quite awhile for both. Been there before and it was better. Kept having to ask people for water, silverware and other items. The food was just adequate. Never saw such disorganization in a buffet setting. They had shrimp, which was nice; but not cocktail sauce. One more thing, made this reservation through Open Table in advance. I called a few days before to verify my reservation. They said they had not received it. I received a call the next day saying that it had been located under some other papers. This is why I always verify reservations.
The dining room at the Green Park Inn is charming, in an old-fashioned way, which I found refreshing. The food choices were good, and the food was yummy. The server lacked a positive personality, but was accommodating. Other servers seems delightful. In a world of cookie cutter restaurants, The Chestnut Grille was a warm, charming welcome.
We dined on a very quiet Thursday night, sharing the entire restaurant with only 1-other couple! The food reviews we'd read encouraged us to eat here, and they were correct.
It was tapas night, so that was a bonus. Very unique offerings; a terrific fig sauce on a bit of grilled lamb was terrific. Main meals were braised short ribs, and trout, both of which were very good. I give the kitchen an A+. A mountain view would've made it complete, but the food was most memorable, all by itself.
