The Chestnut Grille
Very nice setting. Food was good but not remarkable.
Waiter was nice & friendly but seemed too busy to pay attention. Eg, we had to ask repeatedly to get ice water & he never seemed to notice.
Chicken was dry and food felt like it was heated over
This place has lots of potential but the young staff desperately need better training and somebody needs to attend to marketing. Our server wasn’t familiar with any of the drinks and thus could not make informed recommendations. The menus on the table were not current and nobody has updated the website since 2018. You feel a bit dejected after being told for the 3rd time that something you ordered is not available anymore or the establishment has run out of the product:-/ I’d recommend using some other seasonings than salt and pepper for the lamb (perhaps garlic and rosemary). Presentation of the food needs work.
We were very surprised to be the only patrons on a Friday night. Seems like the place could use some entertainment to compete with establishments downtown! The young staff were friendly and sweet, though chatty in the kitchen which could be heard loud and clear in the dining area. Overall the place has great bones but it would really benefit from greater polish and professionalism to help it match the ambience of the Inn and truly bump things up a notch!
Great meal..one of the Best in the area
We ❤️Ed the steak tips and the salmon. The Pot de Creme for dessert is yummy
We will be returning soon
Great food at great prices/ a hidden gem of Blowing Rock NC
Chestnut Grille cancelled our reservation at the last moment and put us in the Tavern with an inferior menu and a kitchen that was not prepared. Very disappointed and aggravated. Will not recommend to any one.
Stayed at this hotel driving home from vacation. When we checked in the desk person said we better hurray and book reservations for the restaurant because it was almost full. We get there and only 3 other couples in restaurant. First couple got up and left because food was bad so we ordered something different. Ordered flank steak medium well. It literally came out in 5 minutes so we immediately knew something was off. The food looked and smelled to be sitting for hours in the back. We ordered a bottle of wine and waitress didn’t know how to open. I didn’t cause a scene and actually paid $115 for a dinner we boxed up and threw away going out the Doors. Went to Bob Timberlake and spent $300 on a fabulous meal. We also had gnats flying around our wine glasses and bottle. I would never recommend this place.
The food was terrible. The green beans were under cooked and tasteless. My cornbread mix at home was far better. The waitress totally botched our order. The wine menu is appalling. The hotel that houses this restaurant was old but nice. When I suggested to the waitress that I would stay in the hotel again but not eat in the restaurant she reminded me there are plenty of other restaurants in the town. I suggest not eating at this restaurant.
I had the vegan dish, the quinoa. It was good but a bit too spicy. I like spicy, but for someone who doesn't it wouldn't fair well. My husband's meat dosh was very good. And the staff and the whole experience was very nice.
We enjoyed our dinner. The Green Park Inn is a unique location and we enjoyed the ambiance of both the historic hotel and the Chestnut Grille. The food was good. The wait staff was friendly, but seemed a bit understaffed, except that there were very few diners there (most of the restaurant was empty). We were there on a Friday evening, and the restaurant was surprisingly non-crowded.
The food was great but the decor was horrible, the room was dingy, dark and quiet like a funeral home. No atmosphere at all. They could maintain the original architecture and still lighten all the colors and add louder music and better lighting.
The staff was super nice and the food was great!!
The seared filet tips were the best I’ve ever had, perfectly cooked with a great sauce. The chef definitely knows his business!
Manager was great. Waiter was great. One of the worst meals My family has had in a restaurant.
The food was either burned or cold. The cornbread was burned on the bottom and acted as if it wasn't cooked in the center.
Whether you stay at the historic inn or elsewhere, this restaurant is a must visit while in the Blowing Rock area. The service is exceptional, the food delicious and the wines are not going to be your usual finds. Portion sizes are generous. The food is freshly prepared. We started with a salad. The greens fresh with restaurant prepared dressing that enhanced each salad. I highly recommend the arugula salad. Salmon and Filet Tips were our main course choices. Both were prepared to our specifications and delicious. The salmon was on a bed of beluga lentils, which is a nice unexpected side dish. We finished with a house made key lime pie slice. The graham cracker crust was indeed made in house and the key lime was filling the right lite touch to the meal. I highly recommend The Chestnut Grille! Well done, team. We'll see you again when in the area.
good food, service and location. Menu limited, but sufficient
I must say I was a little disappointed. There were several drinks the full bar could not make that we ordered. There arent many menu choices to choose from as well. What we did order was good but not great and our entrees were not HOT also? Our reservation was 7:15 and there was hardly anyone there. I guess this place is good for the quest if thats all you have.
Excellent service, location, and food. Shrimp and Grits were delicious....prime rib to die for. My new favorite place at Blowing Rock, NC.
Amazing food, attentive staff, great ambiance. We had a wonderful quiet dinner with live piano music from the front entrance. We will make a trek back for sure!
The service was great. Our server was new and eager to please. The food was good. The atmosphere is inviting. I'd go back.
Food was well timed yet when it came out it was cold and the food did not have much flavor. I had a chicken dish and my boyfriend has filet tips. His filet tips were incredible but his risotto was undercooked and mac and cheese was also cold. The ambience is very interesting if you like history. It was very neat that the hotel was known for being haunted and this added to our experience.
Went here with my girlfriend this past weekend as we were traveling through the area. Looked up the website and decided to give it a try. I do not recommend. When I walked in I noticed that quite a few guests had almost full plates in front of them with napkins over them. My girlfriend and I ordered the iron steak. Had zero taste or flavor. The butter that came with our meal had more flavor than the $22 steak I ordered. Would NOT recommend.
We shall return as soon as practical. Great place. Excellent food and service.
My friend and I really enjoyed the service we received here, but the food was forgettable. It would be OK for a quick bite on the run, but I would not recommend making this a destination restaurant for dinner. The breakfast food was better.
I have lived in the NC High Country for almost 15 years and this is the first time I have eaten at the restaurant in the Green Park Inn in Blowing Rock. I shouldn't have waited so long! Great food and great value, especially for Blowing Rock. I have probably been to almost every other restaurant in Blowing Rock and The Chestnut Grille ranks up there with the best. The rack of lamb and flat iron steak were both cooked perfectly to order and the accompanying vegetables were delicious. Friendly staff with attentive service. Good wine and cocktail list too. We feel that we've found a hidden gem and will be going back soon.
Salads were fresh and very good. Osso buco was good although it could have used more seasoning. The pasta was very good. Elk meatloaf tasted good but looked very unappetizing and was not hot when served. The corn bread was flat and dense and just not good. Deserts were okay but served room temperature. It would have been nice to have warm bread pudding. Service was very good.
For us they were all in. Working very hard. One of my favorite places.
It was horrible. The food was terrible. We waited for way too long to hear that the only nice wine on the menu was not available. The chef would not accommodate a simple request to switch pasta for veggies. The food was so bad that we did not eat it, paid and went to another restaurant. So bad!
The Chestnut Grille is located in the historic Green Park Inn and it offers a cozy, unique atmosphere. Over the course of a four day stay at the Inn, I ate at the Grille or from the menu [in the also classic Divide bar] three evenings. Although I attempted to not repeat an order, the brussel sprouts are so good that they must be an every time appetizer order. The mussels and trout are excellent choices for a main event and the beet salad is as good as any I've had.
I, of course, had made my reservation through Open Table. When we arrived, the hostess did not show us as having a reservation. Showed her my confirmation on my cell phone and she apologized stating we must have been overlooked. She immediately seated us at a small table for two at the back of the restaurant which felt like overflow seating. Service was good but seemed rushed. I had the rack of lamb which was served swimming in a plate of grits with chopped up brussel sprouts. Lamb had little flavor and I have had much better grits at a hole in the wall diner. Wife had the salmon which she said was good but can get the same at most restaurants. Beet salad and the pear salad were okay with the extras thrown on top being the highlight as the lettuces in both salads being very limp. What saved the meal was the bottle of Pazzano 2016 Pinot Noir and the fruit crisp dessert with granola and vanilla ice cream on top.
The hidden gem in the Blowing Rock dining world!
Delicious... Quinoa stir-fry and trout were both excellent!
All around it was a sub par experience. The service was below average switching servers in the middle of service. The second server was better. The food was bland and of poor quality. The ambiance was dated.
This is a reasonable place considering its location. The food was acceptable and the service inconsistent, but friendly and well intentioned.
My oysters with bacon and fresh tomatoes were very good. My wife enjoyed her broccoli appetizer. My steak was good as was her eggplant.
Pacing was off, wine served after the entrees. Again, servers were friendly and were trying hard, maybe a training issue.
Hat tip to Megan, our server,
We were staying at the Green Park Inn, where the Chestnut Grille is located, and took a chance based on the menu. Food was delicious. Service was excellent. Wine was good. We liked it so much that we went back the next night. Hope we are in Blowing Rock again soon and can go back to the Chestnut Grille.
they need to advertise or otherwise get the word out as the food is good by in large and there is no one there. The ambiance is too low key-- it could use a little brightening up. We set outside just to have something to look at - the patio is nice and should be utilized fully. We'll return and hope they read reviews
Fantastic restaurant and good value
We enjoyed our stay at Green Park Inn.The Chestnut Grill is in the Inn.The setting is quaint and friendly.
Our dinner was well prepared and the service was great. We also enjoyed two breakfast meals there. There is live music in the lobby area every Friday and Saturday evenings.A great stay!!
You go here because this is an historic venue. If you are expecting modern things, go elsewhere. But Green Park has very good food at reasonable prices in a genuinely historic setting. Flank steak particularly good!
I am amazed that locals haven't caught on to the talent now in the kitchen. My wife and I eat here frequently, especially on Sunday nights when we can enjoy good live music on the front porch. We usually order salads or the fried Brussels Sprouts which are excellent and inexpensive (4.50 for the manor salad).
The last two times we ordered the salmon and barramundi and both fish are delicious and well-prepared. They also have improved the training of their waitstaff, and if you desire fine food in a quiet atmosphere at a great price, this is the place.
