The Cellar: Tapas, Beer, Wine
Great food, nice people, we really enjoyed it! Would be a great date spot!
food is very good, but they do not honor reservation times, and do not seem to be at all concerned when they are 30 minutes late for at least 5 different groups the night we were there. To be that late for a 630 reservation for 4 just means you are seating too many folks early in the evening.
Great menu with a variety of cold and hot small plates. Go with friends so you can try a variety. Nice wine and beer list. Make a reservation, as the place was packed by 6:15pm
My wife and I made a reservation at The Cellar for Valentines Day. We completely understand that this is one of the busiest dining days of the year so we expected it to be busy. We got there right at our reservation time of 8:30. They had a table open and ready for us which was good. But after that there was not many positive things to say. This review is solely based on the environment of the restaurant as we did not stay longer than a few minutes as we knew this was not going to work for us. The biggest issue we had with the establishment was the way it was set up. The tables are unbelievably close together as if they wanted to cram as many guests as possible with lack of concern for the comfort of the guest. It is nearly impossible to walk in between tables without rubbing up on another guest. The person sitting to my left was literally closer to me than my wife was. With this being Valentine’s Day we wanted to be able to interact with each other and there is no way we could have carried a private conversation knowing the proximity of our neighboring diners. So we decided to leave before even ordering a drink. We are disappointed because we really were excited to eat there as the menu had a good selection to choose from. Maybe we will try again on a day that is not as busy but advise for the restaurant would definitely be to reconsider how they currently have the layout of their tables.
Food quality and presentation was above expectations while the wait staff seemed to lag a bit. I’m not complaining though,it was indeed V-Day.
Nice take on Spanish tapas. I especially like that there are lots of vegetarian choices. The grilled vegetables are savory and done to perfection. Their take on gambas al ajillo with the whole roasted garlic on the side is exceptional. The wine list, while small, has some nice choices. Eager to go back!
Very good food. The menu has changed from our initial visit a few years ago. The prices have gone up from what we had experienced in the past. For over $60 we didn't get what we had in the past.
My daughters birthday.
What should have been a short 7 minute drive to the Cellar from our home turned into an almost hour-long ordeal due to a wreck on the interstate. There were several people waiting to be seated, luckily I had made reservations which were honored even though we were an hour late! Long and short of it, fantastic service, tasty tapas, and great atmosphere. We will be back!
We ordered four tapas and a bottle of house wine. All were excellent. Definitely recommend the fried avocados.
Top notch service and food is wonderful with the exception of the Naan bread which was rubbery, flavorless and not adequate for dunking in all of the wonderful sauces the dishes were prepared in. Desserts hit the spot! Will definitely return!
Terrible food. If you want tapas go to Mas Tapas. Worst dinner in along time. Nothing good there !
Such a wonderful night! The service was top level and the food was insanely delicious. I think we tried everything on the menu and were never disappointed. The churros are a must!
The food was excellent, a quasi-fusion between modern ideas and traditional tapas. The fired Avocado and the lamb chops really stood out; the lamb came with a risotto that added up to almost a full meal in themselves. The portions were substantial and the quality exceptional. Beware, though, the place is not inexpensive....but very much worth it to splurge.
Great food! Wonderful atmosphere.
Had a really nice experience. Great food and atmosphere. Pricy for ABQ, but perfect for a special occasion. Happily spent three hours there picking at the wonderful food and drinking wine.
We had heard many good things about this Spanish style Tapas Restaurant. Upon entering we were glad we made reservations because every table was full. It was a very quaint establishment with lots of atmosphere. Unfortunately, it took 15 minutes and me stopping a staff member walking by before we could place a drink order. From their the service was sporadic. Water glasses were consistently empty. Our first two orders we quite good. The roasted pepper soup and asparagus, but unfortunately the paella was not worth the wait. Upon receiving it the food was cold and fish over cooked. Furthermore, they put chorizo in the dish, but we did not order it. Overall it was a disappointment. For the price and hype I would have expected much better service and quality.
Plus: Great food! GREAT server! Always!!
Minus: Chaotic! Hostess was pointing at our table to another couple who were waiting to be seated. From that moment on that couple and the hostess kept looking at our table. It was uncomfortable, unprofessional. Table next to us wasn’t being served for a while. Tables were being shuffled everywhere to acomidate the large parties. Confusing, chaotic, at times unprofessional. I love this restaurant, however, they need better coordination, and need to understand professionalism in the midst of a busy night. There was a man working in a white shirt that was rude to the hostess at times. He seemed to be a supervisor of some sort. He was uptight and needed to think that his customers could see and hear how he treated others.
Love that Candice recognized that we were back! She welcomed us and said “Welcome back!” That was warming!
Food was above par. Went for New Year’s Eve with some friends and everyone remarked on how amazing the food was. There was something for everyone. Only marks of improvement went to the noise level and the metal chairs were a bit uncomfortable.
I have been to The Cellar twice now. I really love the food, the ambiance, and the service. It is not in a super convenient location for me, but worth the little bit of travel!
It is a very small dining room so I highly recommend reservations and through Open Table it was easy to make them.
Excellent food, great service, nice atmosphere. blah blah blah
Best tapas in town, the waiter was incredibly thoughtful and we received the best service. The food and wine was just amazing.
Great service and even better food. A must go for any occasion.
The Cellar remains our favorite for special occasions and out of town guests
The food is AMAZING...but you definately pay for it. Service is always excellent. Chef will do custom orders for little ones...last time we were there a man at another table who just started singing an part of an opera which was beautiful and awesome! It added to the overall ambience of the place. Would highly recommend.
The food was fine., but A $15 price tag for an appetizer is kind of ridiculous. Customer service was great. Ambiance was nice. I just can’t get over the overpriced tapas. I had to go buy dinner after dinner.
Across the board, the tapas we tried and the wine we drank were all excellent. The tapas had a subtle NM fusion involved, combining the best of Spain and NM. We eat early (5:30-6:00pm, so the place was mostly empty. I suspect the noise level might increase the more people occupied the place. Service was excellent: the server was there when needed but did not hover. He really knew the menu and was able to help with selection and balance. We had four of us in our group, and we shared some of the tapas.
The Cellar was not cheap, even with sharing. Still, all four of us thought it worth every penney. We may not be able to eat there every week, but we will be back. It gives us hope for the "food scene" in ABQ.
Terrific service amazing food
If I lived in the neighborhood, this restaurant might be more important to me, but I don't, and the food was just fair. Recently back from a trip to Barcelona and Madrid, I perused their menu online, and went expecting to try a nice paella. Not offered. Ordered three tapas. Asparagus wrapped in serrano was good, though presented as a bundle of produce. The sautéed shrimp in garlic would have been good (so simple) had the shrimp not been of the generic, frozen, 24-30/lb variety and therefore significantly overcooked. The grilled baby lamb chops were delicious, but not especially Spanish. The ensalada Cellar with tangerines was, likewise, uninspired, and even pedestrian. I had to request bread, which took a half hour to be baked apparently, and wanted it served with manchego. The cheese was worse than bad. So, as a neighborhood place, finding something simple to eat might not be as big a challenge. Memories of our food in Spain, however, did not flood back.
Timing of output of food could have been better. Went with friends, all their food came out first. They finished eating then our food started coming out. Invited friends to enjoy a meal together but didn’t quite work out that way. Food is great and service is good too.
So we’ve lived in Albuquerque for about 25 years, and like most people, we continue to return to favorites. Going downtown for a show, my wife said let’s try something new. I am so glad we did. The food was fantastic and our service was great. I felt taken care of for the entire evening. There is no doubt we will be there again and again.
Great service and good food. Noise level high, conversation difficulty with elderly people very difficult.
Found this little gem on Yelp. It was fantastic! Will definitely be back with friends.
My family of 6 enjoyed the Cellar on a Saturday night. We dined early to beat the noise and enjoy conversation at our table. We were seated promptly, however the table reserved for 6 was not set up. The staff quickly scrambled and did meet our OpenTable reservation request. The ceviche, shrimp special, were just great. Other items including steak and stuffed mushrooms were also very tasty. The only item that I would not recommend is the tuna on crisps- bland and tasteless. Service was terrific!
Strengths of this restaurant are that our server was fantastic. The ambiance was also wonderful- a nice small dining room, open kitchen, romantic soft lighting- tons of aesthetic points there. At first glance, the menus seemed well-curated and creative but most of the dishes largely missed the mark. They were plated very well, but the flavors (and temperature on the lamb) didn't really work. That said, we had a late date-night reservation and it seemed a seasonal menu so we might give it another try in a different season.
Enjoyed a tasty dinner celebrating family birthdays. Excellent service and fun to share different dishes.
The Cellar is a family favorite that never disappoints!
We shared multile tapas between 4 people. Every single dish we ordered was impeccable.
Great Tapas! Good service and pleasant atmosphere. Love this place!
Overall amazing as usual. Even though they’re tapas, I wish the portions were a little bigger.
