In 1969, artistic craftsmen of Disneyland fame created a romantic rendezvous in the cellar of the old California Hotel. The Cellar is the perfect setting for an intimate and romantic evening of fine dining. Patrons will find themselves enjoying fine French cuisine while comfortably seated in soft velvet-backed chairs upholstered in rich mellow leather and surrounded by a dimly lit interior. Intimate and cozy, the dining room is elegant amid structured arches and cave-like walls, decorated with wine casks and silver lanterns. This has been one of my husband and my favorite places to go for special occasions - especially his birthday. This year we had our friends met us and we did not have as good of an experience and were embarrassed we had recommended to our friends to join us. We got there early and bar area and drinks were FABULOUS! When our friends arrived and we were seated, the menu changed and there are not as many meats anymore. The guys had fish which was very average. My friends dinner was delayed 10 minutes so three of us sat with covered food and we all waited and waited and waited. Crème Brule was very eggy. Ambiance is great but definitely going downhill since the last time we were there.
It was our 21st wedding anniversary and my wife had not been to the Cellar. I had years ago and often went there with clients. Our reservation was early at 6 PM and we were ushered to our table promptly. The light was very dim, our waitress had difficulty reading the menu items we had questions about. I loaned her a small flashlight. Twice they brought us someone else's drinks and ours were long delayed. The menu items listed on the Web were not offered at the restaurant. My wife is vegetarian and I picked the Cellar only after reviewing the on-line menu which offered nice pasta and vegetable dish and Caesar salad. Neither were available. The vegetarian offering, ratatouille, was prepared with egg plant to which my wife is very allergic. So she ordered onion soup (excellent), potatoes (excellent), and we had to negotiate a side of risotto (also excellent) as it is not normally offered as a side. Fortunately, the evening ended on a high with the Grand Marnier soufflé. But it is not an experience I will subject my wife to again! The Cellar is definitely not vegetarian friendly!
I had the best time both with our guests and because the food was absolutely delicious. The lobster bisque remains an outstanding must order food. The chateaubriand was done perfectly for my medium rare request. My happy find, being on a ketogenic diet, was the chocolate crepe with cream cheese filling and sliced strawberries on top. (It's too bad there wasn't a Sweetleaf stevia sweetner option though for my decaf.) The waiter was timely and attentive. My only negative is that it seemed to take a longer than expected amount of time to actually be served drinks from the bar as well as our entrees. No matter ... when the food did arrive, it was so very worth the wait. This visit actually moved The Cellar up in rank to #1 for my favorite restaurants.
It took over 90 minutes to get our food. Our waiter was fairly good and tried to make up for it by giving us a lobster bisque, but that really wasn’t enough. We got the chateaubriand and lobster thermidor. Neither were great. Water glasses sat empty for far too long. Ambiance was cheesy. We had high expectations from what we had read, but this fell far flat. We actually expected our meal to be significantly discounted considering how slow it was to received our food, but we were given a full bill (minus a lobster bisque that we had to share). Terrible. We will not be back and will never recommend. Don’t waste your money!
Drove 50 minutes to dine here for my fiancé's birthday and was very disappointed in the service. I confirmed the special occasion twice when making a reservation online and over the phone the day prior, yet upon arrival, never once did the host or waiter ask us if we were celebrating a special occasion. Once seated, we browsed the menu on Yelp for a good 5-10min before having to ask for a menu. The food was good but took longer than I would expect to prepare. The waiter seemed to frequently ask how our meal was but failed to notice my empty glass of water. Even the person he was training failed to notice. I would expect better service for this overpriced fine dinning experience. I would never drive that far to dine here again and regret choosing this place to celebrate her birthday.
Great classic style service which you don't find anymore. The entire staff is kind and professional. The food is wonderful, with a great variety and quality options. A really nice wine list with an amazing craft cocktail list. Best part yet, they have wine specials with huge discounts off the list price for different bottles each time.
This is a place we save for special occasions. Service and food were great. Manhattan and martini were excellent to start with. We had the chefs cut pork chop & the catch of the day fish (John Dory).
We were disappointed in the salad (bland tomatoes & mozzarella was tasteless). We also were disappointed in the bread and butter offered (only white).
The food was over priced, under seasoned, cold and the choices were limited. We were a party of four, with reservations for 7:30. By the time we ordered, (2) appetizers & (1) entrée were no longer available. I would never recommend anyone spending their hard earned money on the experience & food offered at the Cellar.
Drinks were amazing! Truffle butter in the lobster bisque and truffle mac n cheese was awesome! One of the steaks was ordered well done and was presented as medium after being cut into. The sea bass with sake beet purée was delicious. The chocolate soufflé had minimal flavoring but had a good texture.
This was our first time at the incredible Cellar. The ambiance is dark, romantic and vintage. The cocktails were incredible and our wine was excellent (and well-priced for a special occasion). Very good food and just a perfect place to spend our anniversary. I can't wait to go back!
The whole thing about the cellar was great. But our server Laura was the best. Her ability to explain all the dishes. To how they are prepared and what ingredients were in each dish. But most of all her personality and service was over the top. Not once did our wine glasses go empty. She was on top of everything. The food was out of this world. Very romantic place. If I would have a complaint about one thing. The lighting over the booths, a little too bright for my liking. But that won't keep us from coming back. 5 stars all the way around.
We had a very nice time. Our waiter was great and attentive. The food was very good. The only suggestion would be to extend the main course menu a little as the selections are somewhat limited. Again, the food that we did order was very good.
My friend had been coming here for 15 years and brought me. Had their specialty Chateaubriand - amazing, best ever. The restaurant was a bit hard to find from the address. It is through the courtyard, to the right, down the stairs. Some signage would be helpful.
Love this place, complete surprise when we walked in and the look of the place, great decor complimented by the staff. Started our night at the entry bar, bartender was a perfectionist on making drinks. Table was ready, moved there and service was great, food was awesome.
Overall - the server did an impeccable job. He carried this venue. The OpenTable description does not accurately reflect the quality and caliber of this place. It's very tired, musty, and rough; however, whatever shortcomings this venue has, the server over came them with a natural ease. I recommend that you GO here knowing that it's a casual venue, NOT an elegant experience. It's not French by any means. It's not cheap by any means. It cost the same as Mastro's Steakhouse without the fineness. What you do get here is GREAT service and good food in a dark subterranean 1960's style decor, which if you are an old schooler like me, it reminded me of old times. This place 30 years ago was The Bomb for this area, nothing better nearby.
According to the staff, there's a flying black pest that there's no way to get rid of, which seems implausible. My first impression was the rougher than expected crowd at the bar and the black flying pests, which gave me great pause. Again, let me repeat that the server who has been there for decades was so flawless in his presentation that he well surpassed the great anxiety that we developed initially. Well Surpassed! So long as he is working there, I will return with a well-adjusted mindset.
