The Catch Ratings and Reviews
No more high end Newport Beach restaurants for us. The Catch has better food, better service, and ample parking if you don’t wish to valet. We had a very memorable Valentine’s Day dinner with impeccable service by Phillip. We were treated like royalty and served food fit for a king. Best restaurant in the OC for a special occasion. $$$$ but so worth it.
Had not been to The Catch in a long time and the night exceeded all expectations. My wife made reservations for a V-Day dinner out, which we hadn’t done in a few years due to all the craziness that typically accompanies the day when dining out. The crowd was manageable and service top notch. The Catch did have a special holiday menu but also, to our liking, had their standard menu too. The raw oysters were fresh and clean with great flavor, clam chowder thick and rich with a plenty of clams. A huge tasty wedge, seared ahi and the kimchi brussel sprouts were unbelievable!!! Thanks for a great night out - we’ll be back soon!
THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I HAVE BEEN TO THIS LOCATION SINCE IT WAS ON STATE COLLEGE. IT ABSOLUTELY DID NOT DISAPPOINT!!!!! MUCH BETTER THAN THE OLD LOCATION. FOOD WAS SUPERB!! I FREQUENT THE DEL FRISCO'S IN LAS VEGAS AND I HAVE TO SAY THAT THE CATCH REALLY OUT-DOES EVEN THAT RESTAURANT.
GREAT MEAL. GREAT STAFF. GREAT LOCATION. I CANNOT THINK OF A THING THAT COULD HAVE IMPROVED THIS EXPERIENCE!!!!!
My overall experience was great. My only concern was the limited availability of seating for customers who arrive early. My reservation along with about eight others was for 5:00 which was before the restaurant opened. Only two people were able to be seated in the lobby area. In addition, the manager had a meeting with the waiters just before five which caused the customers to have to wait to be seated a few minutes after five after having to stand waiting for 5:00.
Steaks are a la carte. They came with absolutely nothing on the plate with them. Therefore the presentation was very poor. They should have been dressed up to look better. My steak (16oz ribeye) was ordered as medium well. The inside was fine but the outside was burnt. My wife’s was an 8oz sirloin ordered as medium well also. It was over cooked, dry, and tough. The side dish we had was a fried rice which was good. We brought the remainders of both steaks home. My son says mine was “okay” but my wife’s was terrible.
Phil, our sever was very good and professional and the woman tending bar was very good.
For the prices it was not a very good experience . We had been here for drinks prior to an Angel game and The Catch does that well. Too many other good choice in the general area to return for dinner. By the way, our daughter and husband have been here for dinner and they too thought it was very average.
We had a reservation for 2 at 6:30 on a Friday night and tickets for a show at the Grove starting at 8. 90 minutes should be plenty. We let our server know this ahead of time. We ordered by 6:40 and by 7:35 we still didn't have our meal. I wasn't about to rush through a $45 steak so I called the manager over to explain. Although we didn't have to pay for the salad that actually showed up it practically ruined an otherwise nice evening. Thankfully Lewis Black was great. I will not be recommending The Catch to anyone.
I made the reservation on behalf of my daughter and her boyfriend Tyler for his Senior Winter Formal. They had an absolutely wonderful experience which morphed into the event of their evening, far surpassing the Formal. Their experience at The Catch was all they talked about when they came home.
Now her twin sister is chomping-at-the-bit to go to The Catch. Since my wife and I are both in the food service industry we get an extra thrill watching our daughters express their own appreciation for great food and great service in a fabulous environment.
I have been to the restaurant at least 6 times and always loved the overall experience. This time was a little disappointing. I ordered the dinner special which was the prime rib. The portion was a good size, but it was so tough, I could barely eat it. I also ordered the French onion soup which was barely warm. Had to send it back. Happy to say they made me a fresh one that was piping hot. Drinks, shrimp cocktail and halibut were all very good.
Adequate over priced entrees, limited wine list; had the feel of a sports bar disguised as a fine dining restaurant.
Service was very good; Caesar Salad prepared at table side was excellent and prepared by a very polite and attentive Salad chef.
Very loud ambient noise level inside.
Fabian was a great server and super friendly! I didn't care for the aioli sauce on the ahi, the taste was ok but the presentation was lacking. I think the ahi should have a ginger sesame. That's just my opinion. I know aioli is a thing with like ahi burgers but not great with an entree. Again, just my opinion. My yellowtail app was to die for! Omg!!! Also, the b sprouts & mashed pots were delish! I ordered a soufflé but it caved in when it came out of the oven, bummer. I'm chalking that one up as a blessing. Cheers!
Food was fine....service was lousy. Had to repeatedly ask for things because the waiter completely forgot and didn’t check in regularly. We ended up having to ask other staff to get him...multiple times. For the price of the food, the service should have been considerably better. Unlikely to return.
We have dined for lunch at The Catch many times. Unfortunately, this experience was not the greatest. One of our party ordered the seared ahi salad and he said the ahi was stringy and not sushi quality and the salad was drenched in dressing. Another person ordered the Catch Burger medium-well and it was definitely medium-rare. Both of these issues were brought to the attention of the waiter and we were surprised that no manager came by to address it and there was no adjustment made on the bill. We will, sadly, have to reconsider going there again.
We've been to The Catch several times but for 7:00 p.m. New Year's Eve dinner we brought some friends with us. Now they're hooked! Our server was very knowledgeable about the menu for the evening and was on top of everything that needed attention. See you again very soon.
We had 6:30 reservations, showed up early so had a drink at the bar. My wife ordered a Bloody Mary, the drink was fine, but the garnish was ridiculous. They garnish was what amounted to a stale mini donut stuffed with cold cheese and wrapped in burnt bacon. The garnish only served to delay the drink by 10 minutes as it was inedible. When the hostess came to seat us we asked if we could sit outside. The server took forever to greet us, when she finally came we ordered drinks. After 20 minutes of waiting I asked for a manager and 10 minutes later she showed with no drinks. Rather than apologized she educated us on the fact that we were sitting in a cocktail lounge area. She was condescending so much that she should have punctuated her lecture with “duh...”
The manager took our drink order (again) all the while trying to convince me to buy a $24 glass of Cabernet. She later arrived with the drinks completely forgetting what appetizers we ordered. However, she remembered to bring me a sample of $24 per glass Cab (about $4 worth). The sample tasted like a $24 per bottle Cab nothing special and certainly not $100+.At this point she assigned us a new cocktail server and we started all over, yet again. It was a real sh#t show! As food goes the Onion soup was like onion chili, the short rib was short rib ice cream, the Chilean Sea Bass was ok at best and certainly not $49 worth. Orange Hills Sea Bass is 10x better. Bottom line The Catch has “jumped the shark”!
We happened upon The Catch by looking online at luxury seafood restaurants. And oh what a treat. The food was fabulous! The atmosphere was elegant without being stuffy. Our waiter was charming and engaging and very knowledgeable about the menu. We had a wonderful evening and would highly recommend this restaurant.
