The Captain's Table Ratings and Reviews
The Captain’s Table is located at the Fisherman’s Wharf in Punta Gorda. The only negative thing I can say is that there was difficulty in finding parking. On the evening that we were there, there was the first night of the mall’s Holiday Lights Festival. We had to fight the crowds to get to the Captains Table. What we hoped would be a relaxing evening was quite stressful.
Three out of the four dinners were excellent. The Fruta Di Mare was not what was expected. On the disappointing side.
Myself and eight other friends went to the Captains Table after we heard of the big change to the overall ambiance of the bar and dining area. That was certainly the case! Everything is cleaner and more convenient to diners and barflys. The construction removed all the odd steps and different levels in the place and it is indeed a nice place to look at with great views of the water. Sadly, that was the best part of the visit. We should have been tipped off by the half empty restaurant on a Friday night. We've been there many times and it was always packed, especially on Fridays when the offered the seafood buffet.
Sad point # 1. The seafood buffet has been discontinued. It was great but the menu changed and out goes the seafood buffet.
Sad point # 2. It took over an hour after we were seated to get our food. There's no way it should have taken that long with the number of actual customers that had in the place. They're going to be in big trouble when (and if) the place is full when the snow birds come back.
Sad point # 3. It appeared there were only 2 or maybe three waiters for all the tables. Granted, half the tables were empty but there's a lot of space to cover. There should have been more wait staff. Again, watch out for the disaster in the making come January and the season.
Sad point # 4. I ordered a New York strip and it was so tough I could barely cut it. It had so much gristle in it it was barely chewable. Others complained of cold mashed potatoes which I can never understand. The plates must have been sitting out in the kitchen for pickup way too long. When the manager was told, he said he would bring more over to the table. Why would we want more cold potatoes?
Sad point # 5. It took almost a half an hour to get our checks. We couldn't wait to get out of there.
Be forewarned, this is not you parents Captain's Table. You will be disappointed.
I have been going there for 17 years, and it was always one of my favorite places. I will never go back. They partially remodeled it and did nothing but make things worse. From the girls who greeted us with a bad attitude, to lousy service, to kitchen mistakes to a menu which did not include one single entrée or appetizer that I would order - it was a horrible evening. The following evening - Laishley Crab House (the same owners) - everything was great.
I was disturbed by our handling at the front desk. We had a reservation for four at 6:00 PM. We arrived a few minutes early. At first the hostess wanted to seat us in the bar. I said that would not be satisfactory and I would like a regular table close to the window so we could enjoy the view. She then tried to put us in one of your high top tables in the back section of the dining room. I again told her that this was not satisfactory. She then conferred with what looked like a manager and he put us in what was probably the most desirable table in the room. It was a great dinner and a great view. My only contention was that I had made the reservation over 24 hours in advance and that should have seated us with a little priority over walk-ins. I hate to have a good experience tainted with the action of a hostess who was unsure as to what she could do. Thank you for reading this, we have been dining in your restaurant since 1983 when it was Nightingale's and have seldom had a complaint. The new layout and entrance are a great improvement.
We really like the new look over the original one. I always order their outstanding and generous Lobster Grill Cheese sandwich. Cole Slaw dies taste homemade. My husband enjoyed the Grouper sandwich. Although it was too chilly to sit outside in this visit, we had a great view of beautiful Charlotte Harbor. One of our go to spots on our trips down.
Food was good, service not so good. Wine was very slow in coming. Arrived after we had half eaten our appetizers. This seems to be an ongoing problem with this restaurant, they need to review their system. I think the bar tender gets into the act and if he is busy, the servers have to wait for him to finish. Also, our server seemed to have tables all over the place, it was hard to track her down if we needed something.
Revisited Captains Table for our anniversary. Our previous experiences were not at all good. This time we were delighted with our entire experience. The new décor is fresh and modern. The menu was great. It was hard to make a choice. Everything we ordered came cooked just right and just like the description on the menu. This will be one of our new go to places
I got the salmon, which was pretty dry and mediocre. My friend got a seafood platter and her fish was woefully undercooked. The bar was nice - would be okay to meet there for a drink and the view. Later in the evening raucous music from downstairs really ruined the atmosphere of a quiet evening and clashed terribly with the piano music. Gave it 3 stars for the bar and view; 2 stars for the food.
We were at the Captain's Table for a fundraising benefit in the very nice, new bar area, and then my husband and I had a quiet dinner afterwards. Margaret, our server, was fabulous, attentive, efficient, and friendly. The food was very good, and watching the sunset over the water made for a very nice evening.
We use to love the Captain’s Table. We were disappointed when they did away with the Friday Buffet. We have eaten there many times in the past. This time was a total disappointment. The menu was not as good as before. Didn’t have as many choices. The prices have went up and the food was not as good as it use to be. Service was ok. In our opinion, the food quality was not the same as before and we were paying more money for less satisfactory food. We have a 40 minute drive to Punta Gorda. We will not be making that trip to eat at Captain’s Table. Not worth the drive.
We had a wonderful fish dinner. The red snapper was just perfect. The salads they served were chilled and well prepared. The view from the deck was fantastic. The wine list was ok and hopefully will be added to in the future. Very attentive wait staff and a fair price for the area. The place has been totally remodeled and looks great.
New renovations are great. Bartender wasn’t familiar with old menu and couldn’t make a drink to save her life. Waiter Bobby was great and tried to save the meal best he could. Red snapper was oily and had a terrible taste. Can’t get the taste taste out of my mouth. The seafood platter was awesome however. Hopefully they can iron out the bugs and get back on track.
Server was excellent. There was no lobster available ,which is what we had come for. The grilled grouper was good ,but the fish and chips was more like Mrs Paul’s . The fries were good . Our server was attentive and courteous. The price was reasonable and the portions were generous.
visited after it reopened after remodeling. Poor renovation job. Removed the salad bar. Opened up entire area. Still has the greatest view, but......Wine prices are out of sight, $42 was the least expensive. Dinners are now Ala-Carte after removing the salad bar. Food portions are smaller as well. New chef. We've dined here since 1995. Nothing like the "former" Captains' Table. We used to dine here a lot. Not any more, I doubt that we'll be back.
Went for lunch.Very disappointed.Always went for the scallop salad which was really good. Now the wonderful coconut dressing on the salad was replaced with an Italian vinaigrette. Not very good.Brought a table of ten and was kind of sorry we went there because many had never been there.Everybody thought their lunch was average at best. The salad always brought me there but without it i doubt i will go back.I think in an effort to be cutting edge, Chefs ruin their best dishes. Some had a new fad , which is a burger with a mac and cheese bun.Not very good. Also, the lunch took almost an hour to get our food and it wasn't busy.
The food was awful! Had to send my sword fish back. Second piece was not much better. Salad bar left alot to be desired. The waiter was very nice & accommodating. It was my birthday. We will not be coming back again. Could have had better food for less money at McDonald's. I will not recommend this restaurant to any one.
We did not enjoy the food or service. Once seated we had to wait to get drinks and even during our meal we had to stop another waiter just to get our tea glasses refilled and even get our bill when done eating. They were not busy and we were not the only ones that were waiting on drink refills and food service. One couple at a table behind us even got up to leave before eating for they waited so long just for a waiter to even get something to drink. Maybe it was a bad day for this place or maybe it's a bad place to eat, I don't know but I do know I will never eat at this very high price place again!
The service was as outstanding as the food was a disappointment. The chicken was dry and the asparagus was so over cooked it was inetible. The bratworst was a complete failure. It did not even taste like bratworst!
On the other hand, the waiter was attentive and made us feel as though our enjoyment was paramount.
While we will return we will probably not pick a national holiday or the house's "special menu!"
Food was excellent t he only issue was my husband had small pieces of clam shell in his food.He had the Fruit du Mare, which had plenty of seafood in a marinara sauce but the pieces of shell were annoying .You couldn't see them until they were in your mouth.Other than that very good and I would go back anytime.
You must have had a server call out. The cook burned the bread according to server. Had to wait. He had too many tables to cover. I think he was tending bar also. He said you were out of Bacardi Gold for my drink. Worst experience I've had of all my dining with you. I think you were short staffed. Will give you the benefit of this.
