The downstairs patio area was closed in by plastic sheets, which made the room loud and too warm. I asked if they could raise the sheet, but the server told me that someone, who was not sitting by the window and sheet, thus not as directly affected by it as we were, had asked earlier that it not be raised. Our table was in the corner, against the sheet and in the sun, which made for a less than comfortable and peaceful Sunday brunch experience for us, which is a shame since I've been having brunch at The Cannery for more than 35+ years, and I wanted my daughter to have a great experience celebrating her 21st birthday there.
The service was great and the ambiance was wonderful but in our group of 6 people, not one enjoyed their meal. Would definitely not go again and would not recommend.
The menu was not very interesting. The food was OK, the service was excellent. But the prices were outrageous. It did my heart good to see that the restaurant was only about half filled on a Friday night. It may be located in an upscale area, but no one likes to feel gouged. There are too many other good restaurants that give good price value. Even the pasta item on the menu was in the mid $30's. This used to be a great restaurant, food, service, and value. Not any longer. They have seen the last of us.
The shrimp cocktail was impeccable. I ordered the shrimp tacos. I just had too much of the creamy sauce. I like to taste my fish whenever I ate fish either way. Less lost you guys. Otherwise everything was great.
We had a great dinner as always! Staff is always amazing and food is great!
We've been going to the Cannery for years, it never disappoints us. Always delicious and very lovely waitstaff who are knowledgable and accommodating.
Great brunch on the patio, with a dozen oysters, frittata, and Benedict. New menu today, missing a couple items we liked, but no big deal. Benedict was great, frittata was just okay. Nothing to write home about. Love the ambiance, and the service is always great!
Sushi is half the size it used to be. What happened? We loved the Cannery sushi
Seafood salad was tasteless.
This was the first time I left The Cannery disappointed due to our server. He had an arrogant attitude, demeaning tone, and actually argued that a specific dish we came for had not been on the menu for years. I find that odd because I had that specific dish multiple times within the last 2 years. I understand that the menu changes however, there is a more professional and cordial way of speaking to customers. I also made my reservation and noted that we were celebrating a special occasion which was not acknowledged.
We considered getting a table, we decided on the bar. We had an awesome bartender, Trevor. Will come back again!
Patio dining lacks ambience at night. Very noisy. Too close. Halibut was tough and chewy. Seafood pot pie was great. Of the five of us, no one raved about the food (pot pie excepted). Waiter (Cory) was entertaining and prompt. Prices are very high considering atmosphere (patio). Valet is good. Greeters were courteous and friendly. Bar is complete and reasonable. Have been to the Cannery many times in the past. This experience was below par. Lends itself to the old Berraism (Yogi Berra), "nobody goes there anymore, it's too crowded". It is crowd specific. Will probably go again but not for a while.
It was fine. Food was good, nothing exceptional but the view was great and it was a nice lunch. Waitress friendly but busy. Never came back once to ask for another drink order. There was a lot of conversation going on, so I didn’t notice, but as the hostess, I was embarrassed that I hadn’t monitored my guest’s drinks better, they were too polite to order one themselves and the waitress never asked! I’m not sure why I added more to the gratuity that was already added into my bill because it wasn’t really earned.
Great food. Great service. Great night out
Brad was our waiter and was great as always. I would recommend The Cannery to anyone who asked.
The ambiance was wonderful. Great decor inside the restaurant and on the patio where we sat. There was a gorgeous view of the harbor and boats. All of us had the lobster rolls and were impressed by the taste and presentation. I will add the Cannery to my special occassion rotation!
Had Sunday brunch. Great location, very nice ambiance,—both inside and on the deck overlooking the canal. Seafood salad was excellent as was the eggs Benedict. Bloody Mary was a tad light on the vodka. Mimosas were made with a cheap Cava which they called “champagne “. Could do better there Prices are what you would expect for the area and quality—high.
We've alway enjoyed The Cannery and have been many times over the years and often on special occasions. This time, however, we were disappointed by a new menu since our last visit that reduced the number of choices, increased the prices and generally was not very appealing. I'm hoping that management there will get the word that these changes are not going to encourage repeat customers. I can spend $200.00+ at a lot of restaurants in Newport Beach but I want to get my monies worth when the prices are in this range. This didn't happen this past Saturday night.
Was wonderful! Went for valentines dinner. Only downside was I didn’t know that the salad I was asked to add to my entree was at full price. When I was asked it made me feel that the salad came with my meal. I guess I should’ve known everything was à la carte. Besides that it was wonderful and the food was fantastic!!
Excellent food; nice, casual atmosphere; great service; and an excellent wine selection. A little pricy but expected for a special occasion. My favorite spot to dine in OC when visiting from the east coast. Highly recommended.
The attendant when we arrived spent a good three minutes on the phone ignoring us.
Other wait people walked up and also ignored us. Finally, he hung up and because we were two minutes early he told us he could not seat us and we would have to wait.
Waiter was fine.
Oysters were TINY. Especially for the price... Calamari was good.
Scallops were also minuscule. Scallop dish was disappointing.
Place is pretty. Clearly a tourist trap.
Far better places to go in the area to get better quality and quantity sea food for same or less money. Went because of a recent positive review in the Orange County Register. Won't rely on the paper in the future.
Fantastic valentines dinner. Food and service were excellent. We will be back again.
Would not go back. Too many better choices in Newport Beach. Menu only items. No fresh fish or items of the day. The server was friendly but not attentive at all and borderline sarcastic. The restaurant gets great reviews but on this night it was empty. This was our fourth time and definitely our last.
It had been years since we had been to the Cannery. We will be back. Our server Ryan did an excellent job. My wife had the sea bass and loved it. I had the shrimp pot pie. It was excellent. Very enjoyable evening.
Nice restaurant, great food and exceptional service.
Our waiter was great. We sat on the patio and even outside in February they had heaters and it was perfect.
We had to wait for our table and sat at the bar for a drink. Bartenders were busy but took great care of us. Then we sat at a table and staff was great. Service was impeccable. Food was delicious, we had grilled octopus and a salad to start with and the octopus was delicious. Very well cooked , tender and flavorful. The sauce was so flavorful and the salad was great as well. I had the loup de mere which was so tasty and my wife had the opa which was a dinner special. Both plates were clean! Great food and we will go back when we visit Newport.
Excellent food and exceptional service!
We had such a beautiful lunch on the patio. Weather food and service was amazing.
Delicious food, Loup de Mer and all at Water’s Edge
A mistake in order taking was as much our fault as the waiter’s.....
We will return...
Both my date and I had the seafood salad which was beautifully arranged and full of many different types of seafood- shrimp, crab, etc.
The Camry is always a favorite of ours and definitely a place where you can relax enjoy the scenery, great food and service. Their wine selection the second to none with good value. Highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t been there.
Loved it. Xcellent service. Very knowledgeable about the menu and wine. We sat outside. A beautiful night.
Everything we had was awesome
We’ve been there hundreds of times over the years, and it’s always great
Fresh fish was above average and our waiter was wonderful... even recommended a few things off the menu that we would not have tried.. but, he was right... Great service.. great food.
Excellent mixologist, great upstairs bar, the main dining room efficiently run, the servers were very attentive and courteous, and the food was terrific. My wife sends her compliments to the Chef. Her scallop dinner was the best she had ever eaten in her life.
It was nice and easy going. Nothing exceptional, but also no complaints whatsoever.
I go every year
We went to the Cannery to celebrate my wife’s birthday. We sat on the patio near the dock, which is her favorite place to be seated.
We ordered fire grilled Australian lobster tail for our main entree. This is not on the menu but if you ask them they usually can accommodate.
For dessert we shared chocolate molten cake with a birthday candle for her.
Jaime was our waiter. He added just the right amount of attentiveness to complete our quiet celebration.
Great food, great service, and special ambiance.
My wife always loves it at the Cannery.😍
How to describe the experience. Was anything horrible wrong. No. Would I ever go back or recommend. No. First for being seated outside on colder Newport night without even being asked when plenty of open tables inside and being told that if we got cold , they would give us blankets . However, when I asked for an inside seat, was given one with no hassle. They could have just asked and saved me having to walk all the way back to the hostess desk. Second , the atmosphere. The restaurant is tagged as upscale but for as many people dressed nicely is as many in t-shirts and jeans. Nothing like walking next to a guy on way to bathroom in a “Liquor is quicker” t-shirt. If you wanted to be a laid back seafood restaurant be it, but if you want to be upscale enforce your dress code considering you have that on a plaque by your front door. Third, the food . My sister loved her scallops. My tuna was good besides being ice cold . Not sure how you sear tuna and it stays that cold . The barley cream and shishito peppers were great and a nice twist on typical tuna dish. Overall, Cannery lacks a true identity and misses on the details. With so many great restaurants in the area , best to enjoy a night out elsewhere.
