The food was of good quality and ther was a fine selection of real ales for me and a varied selection of Scottish gin for my wife. The only criticism is that it was quite expensive, but as it was for a special occasion I didn’t mind.

First visit in quite a while to the Sample Room, a very pleasant evening was had ,staff very friendly and helpful ,beer more than decent ,starters and mains excellent ,dessert generic and overpriced. On another slightly critical note could have been a couple of degrees warmer.

This is my third visit. Unfortunately I was not too impressed this time - service was good but they where between menus so very limited choice. We started off going for the steak deal but were then told that this had finished. The steak pie I had was very disappointing and l did not finish it, the two dishes my dinning companions had were okay but not up to the usual standard. Having said all this on previous visits the food has been extremely good and once the new menus are in place I'm sure the standard will resume so I would certainly not let this put me off eating here again.

Good location with great ambiance. However service was not the best, long waits, unavailability of specials (we were there at 7.30), half the red wines on the "per glass" menu were unavailable and service personnel who didn't know their oven menu.

Had the breakfast here. No salmon available, which is a shame as we were the second table in the place to order. Otherwise quite pleasant and did not suffer from the dreadful sticky table syndrome so often found in pubs. Food was cooked well and portion sizes were generous. Enjoyable visit. Would be good to have a decaf tea option.

I was pleased with the service, and the food was tasty. The atmosphere was 'lively' and everyone seemed to be having a good time.

Very disappointed with food, drink and service from a venue that used to be great but appeared hopelessly unprepared for a busy night between Christmas and New Year. I booked a table for some food, pre-football, and was given a booth that seated 4 - for a party of 5. Mentioned to staff that this was too small but was told promptly that this was sufficient. I think, cynically, if I hadn’t mentioned that I was coming in pre-football we’d have been at a table, not a small booth (a booth made smaller by boxed-in pipes). I tried to order Stowford press draught cider, was told the barrel was being changed - fair enough but this took 10-15 minutes. We ordered food which arrived in decent time but the burgers were thin and the fish fillet tiny. Each dish served with about 10 chips in a basket. Very mean & meagre portions for pub grub at around £12 each. The fish looked like it had come out a Findus packet. All of us expected far better than was served. We ordered more drinks when the food arrived. After 10 minute delay the waitress returned and advised the Cider was being changed. Again? Given it was changed 20 minutes earlier we questioned that. The waitress checked and now returned with 1 pint instead of 2 requested! ‘We managed to get 1 pint’ - what?! She offered a bottled cider instead; the Aspall sounded nice... sorry, she said, there’s none left! Later I went to the bar to get a pint of lager for a friend. After another long wait, I found that the bar was out of Hophouse 13, out of Innis & Gunn and when I asked for Estrella, was told that was out too and a glass popped on the tap to go with the others (pictured). I know it was busy before the football but the management need to have more staff on to cope, or have someone on the door to limit numbers (would also be sensible to remove some tables in the main bar on nights like this) To run out of so many beers is embarrassing cellar management. That the food was below-par made a disappointing experience worse.
