We very much enjoyed our evening at the Taj Café. It was our anniversary and we wanted someplace with beautiful ambiance, comfortable seating, excellent service and a quiet environment and oh yes, EXCELLENT food. The Taj Café hit every mark. We ordered from the Indian fare menu and it was outstanding!
Attentive and friendly service - best part of the dining experience. Food was tasty but not outstanding. VERY small portions. Did not live up to expectations - - expected something special given the price.
Very disappointed. We loved the restaurant last year for Christmas dinner. This year was very different. Poor service with an arrogant server. Very slow. Food was mediocre. Will go somewhere else next year.
Everything was fine except for the service. Omg, we practically had to get down on our knees to beg for a water refill. Finally the people at the next table (in a different waitstaff zone) told their water-pourer that we needed some too, since they noticed we had been trying unsuccessfully to catch our waitstaff's attention for around 15 minutes. Note to self: next time come prepared with our own water bottles! (p.s. I checked off "good for romantic dinner" because you certainly don't have to worry about overly solicitous waitstaff interrupting anything!)
The service and food were excellent. Our server Michael was outstanding!
Amazing food and exceptional customer service experience!! I dine here frequently and I am never disappointed!
Our guest wanted a burger, which was not on the menu, but it was not a problem. It was also delicious. My husband and I like to go there because I can enjoy the Indian food while he has traditional favorites such as the clam chowder. It's a warm and pleasant environment, and it's easy to have a conversation as the noise level is low.
Service level has dropped here over the years. The waitstaff looks ancient, inattentive, and lazy. Food is always good, but mix the high prices with the poor service, and it does not seem worth it anymore.
Best eggs Benedict in town.
Lovely s always
The food was incredibly good, even though the service was not. The tikka masala and the biryani were both amazing.
So utterly disappointing! The decor is very dilapidated and had nothing magnificent at all about it. I ordered the Lucknow Murgh Biryani and for a staggering $28 I got a half-plateful of very average fare. I have had better food in hole-in-the-wall places in Dallas and Chicago. No pickle, no proper relish or accessory items. Not even a lassi or salty drink to escort the measly entree. Bah!
Our waiter mostly ignored us, didn't take our food order, left the wine bottle on our table for so long that finally I asked the maitre d' for the check and said this must just be a bad night, at which point he took over as our waiter and things got better (not great but better). Good vegetarian Indian dishes, and some very nice wines, though!
I miss the cobalt blue water goblets on the table! It warmed the room!
Great food, great service, great location with a view of Newbury Street. Thank you!
As a long time Taj customer, I once again found my dinner experience (and stay) excellent AND consistent. The change in ownership does not seem to have affected the customer experience in either direction- kudos!!
Cobb salad and naan were delicious -- service was excellent.
Probably the worst Indian food in town though it’s billed as an Indian restaurant.
This does NOT live up to the Taj Group’s reputation. Vastly overpriced too.
Excellent service from not just our waiter, but the assistant and the maitre'd as well. Besides the standard contemporary American items, the restaurant has a selection of Indian dishes -- we had the chicken tikka masala and seafood curry, which were excellent. Very good wine list and cocktails as well.
Most of the customers appeared to be hotel guests -- this restaurant should be better known among locals.
Had a craving for Indian food. Great service. Delicious food. Elegant and peaceful environment, Thank you Mr. GEBREHIWOT for the attentive service and continuous smile.
We went on the weekend to Boston with my family and choose Taj Cafe for what we read in open table. Food was good we had the watermelon gazpacho and salmon (was really good) and Burguer for kids
But the service was not good. Waitresses seem to be tired (I can understand) but when we asked for an additional seat they just throug one set of knife and fork and that was it, then we asked for a proper seat (that something unacceptable in one plane like this) however we said don't worry. Then our waitress was pushing a lot, trying to make us order something we did not want. At the end he was insisting with a dessert that we said no but at the end he brought two ice cream for the kids (I told him please no because they are sick) but he did not care and brought them any way, when I told him please take them away he insisted and left them on the table and made us understand that it was a courtesy so we ended up eating them but he charged us
we did not like that pushing service when we are dining and specially someone that don't listen. It is not that he charged us but is not good don't listen and trying to do what they wanted and no what customer order and pay for
Have been to Taj many times. This time we sat at our table for 15 minutes before any menus were brought to us. Service was slow and orders were not brought out at the same time. We also had a small child with us and needed a high chair and it was brought out to us and was dirty so asked for another one. Food it usually good but I felt the wait staff was not very attentive had to ask for coffee refills
The cafe is still intimate and pleasant..michael the server was great and steered us to a great dinner and Jason the maitre d came to make sure we were happy..food was great!
Great as always! One of my favorite places for breakfast in the city.
The food had one note.. thats butter. Its pricey for the quality and service offered.
As usual, a lovely place to take friends from out of town: excellent and professional service, decent portions, interesting Indo-Bostonian menu, plenty of room between tables, quiet. And having the Public Garden across the street gives the opportunity for a pre- or post-lunch stroll.
We have had a delicious Indian meal at the Taj Cafe on four different evenings, sometimes early, sometimes later. The noise level is very reasonable, so conversation is easy. The service is excellent, as one would expect in the Taj hotel. We have never tried the Western items on the menu, but all of the Indian dishes are delicious. Given the location, prices for food are reasonable, although the wine is as over-priced as it is in other Back Bay restaurants.
Food was great! Service was awesome as well especially with Michael who was such a lovely professional waiter to have. Our wedding anniversary was beautifully spent at Taj Café.
We informed the restaurant that we were celebrating a special occasion and they did not disappoint. A beautiful dessert was delivered complete with birthday candles and without the embarrassing birthday song. We had a window table to afford some people watching and the service was just perfect--quick, efficient and unintrusvve.
This was a last minute decision, and what a treat in all aspects. The host is so warm and accommodating.
Our server was very attentive to the vegan at the table. After ordering, the chef informed him that there was butter in the entree selected.
Our server came right out and offered alternatives.
Our meal was creative and very tasty!
Loved the entire experience!
Not what you expect from a Taj... maybe a Denny's, but you get better service at a Denny's.
It was hot. They had fans to cool people scattered around but not very effective. One sun drape was not working.
It was our family dinner, we enjoyed food ,atmosphere was great ,love to come again
Charlie is our favorite waiter, he always treats us like VIP's!
The cafe used to be the place to go for good Indian food when this hotel was owned by Tata group, now its a privately owned and the food quality has dropped significantly. We have been regular at this place for past 4 years but this time India food was really bad. Wont be going here again!!
Charlie is the best! We look be him! - Kevin and Karin
worst experience ever, service is bad, my cousin has an allergy to nuts and we made sure that the waiter know and specifically ask for orders that doesn't contain nuts , and he recommended some , but still she got an allergic reaction !! I ran with her to the pharmacy to get her an epinephrine pen and instead of apologizing to the rest of the party , they acted like nothing happened , they even made us pay the full amount of the bill !
never ever think of going there again
We visited the Cafe frequently when it was part of the Ritz. Our dining pattern changed and this was the first visit to the Cafe at the Taj. It was an outstanding experience: the ambiance was perfect, the service was impeccable (thank you, Robin) and the food was delightful. We are looking forward to our next visit. The Cafe at the Taj has to be the optimum place for pre/post theater or concert dining.
We love Charlie and the staff at the TAJ! The Best!
