The Butchart Gardens - The Dining Room Ratings and Reviews
Excellent! This was one of our best dining experiences...and we eat out (upscale) quite a bit. Nearly everything on the menu is, or can be made, gluten free. I thought this would be a good meal to cheat on, and it was. The perogie pasta was perfect and the French onion soup was delicious. We split a salmon entree, and the salmon was done to perfection.. moist and tender. The veggies were also delicious. The gardens were lit for the holidays, and we were seated by a window to enjoy the view. Just two or three tables away was the fireplace with a modest fire, not too hot for anyone. Quiet conversation surrounding us, the service was impeccable, warm and caring. And the wine was very good too. Thank you Buchart Gardens, for a most enjoyable evening
The appetizers and main courses my friend and I had were wonderful. My Manhattan was unusual as it seems cinnamon was the spice of the day and put into the drink. Unfortunately I think the bartender believed cinnamon was wonderful in more than a Manhattan. My hot buttered rum also had cinnamon and a cinnamon stick in the drink. I realize the bar might not consider someone who ordered a Manhattan might also order hot buttered rum thus the cinnamon in both drinks. The rum drink was over seasoned with the spice making it unpleasant to drink. I ordered the eggnog tart for dessert. Unfortunately it too was not a hit. I could faintly tell eggnog was used more because of the subtle taste of nutmeg. The dessert was not tasty and I would not recommend ordering it.
Although the food was tasty, two of us felt our meals were not warm enough. Mine had a sauce for the meat, and it would definitely have tasted better hot rather than lukewarm. The waitress was very late coming back to check on us, so it was too late to send it back to get heated up.
We have been dining at Butchart Gardens at this time of the year for the past 15 years. We have never been disappointed with either the food, the service or the amazing views out over the holiday lighted gardens. Friday night was no exception. From the moment we stepped inside the original Butchart home foyer the mood was set with tasteful piano music and a blazing fireplace. We were seated at the windows facing the lawns, Italian and French gardens, all festive with lights and decorations. Our server was attentive, knowledgeable and obviously loved her work... she has been serving at the gardens for 15 years. Our meal was perfectly prepared and presented. Each of us had a different entree... salmon, beef tenderloin and the pork chop. While ordering our entrees, we were informed of a delicious apple tart dessert which takes an hour to prepare and bake which we ordered in time to enjoy with a generous serving of vanilla bean ice cream. A festive evening with 1st class dining, service, atmosphere and company. See you next year!! Merry Christmas!!
Three out of our party of five had the same entree -- beef tenderloin with gnocchi and butternut squash. Presentation was a messy pile of odd-looking stuff in a dark sauce that had an unpleasant taste, perhaps burnt garlic? Or maybe it was the "sherry cream" that made it unappealing. For two of us, the meat had tough, unchewable parts. None of us enjoyed the combination of flavours or the tough strips of some kind of dried vegetable that topped the mixed-up pile of food. The other two diners in our party had salmon and found it rather dry.
The soups we had as appetizers were excellent. This is a very pricey restaurant, and the food just does not meet expectations. They're trying to be too artsy instead of serving tasty food.
Whenever we visit Victoria, a visit to the Butchart Gardens dining room is a priority! We love the atmosphere and the beauty of the surroundings, both inside as well as outside. The service is wonderful and personal, and the food is outstanding. A definite 10 out of 10!
Excellent service. My husbands dinner was not hot. He didn’t want to send it back and wait. We reserved a month ahead and were seated on the porch area which wasn’t as nice as the interior rooms. I was disappointed and would ask for something different next time.
I brought my parents because my mom loves the idea of having tea like the English do and Butchart Gardens did not disappoint. The atmosphere, food, and service was perfect! Also, finding a restaurant that provides a complete menu for gluten intolerant people is not something found very often, but with the proper notice Butchart Gardens does just that and we were all thrilled!!
It is always a treat to have afternoon tea at the Butchart Gardens' Dining Room. The scones and savouries are really delicious, the sandwiches are real tea sandwiches, the desserts are pretty and quite tasty, and the selection of teas is interesting.
A delightful way to enjoy a meal while at Butchart Gardens. We did the high tea in October; high tea in the dining room is only available in the Fall and Winter, and made reservations. The dining room is very quaint and is in what used to be the Butchart residence. While there were a few men there, high tea is probably appreciated more by women. This was my first time to go in October, and while there were a lot of people roaming the gardens, it was nothing like the huge crowds during the summer. Lots of flowers were still out and the Fall colors were beautiful.
My friends and I really enjoyed the atmosphere and the high tea set but because the heater was broken (according the the very nice lady helped our table), the whole time spend in the dining room was uncomfortably warm and hot, which really effect our appetite........ had to wrap the foods up and finish at home. Otherwise would enjoyed better!
The tea is a good value and the ambiance is gracious, relaxed and elegant, an unusual combination to achieve. Situated in the heart of a world class garden, this is how you should complete your tour of the grounds. Some might say that having to pay the gardens entry fee and then the cost of the tea is too much but I would argue that, in combination, this tea is less expensive and is a MUCH better value than tea at the Empress when delivering that Vancouver Island experience.
