The Butchart Gardens - The Dining Room
Superb, unique food and thoughtful service
Music a bit too loud.
As always it was a wonderful experience with 3 generations of Mitchell's who I might add are very fussy eaters and the food was enjoyed by all. It was a lovely treat to finish off the Christmas season.
The Dining Room has a terrific ambience. The staff are very attentive and friendly, but not too much. The food is good. Portions are average. Overall, it was a very enjoyable experience, especially being located at Butchart Gardens.
Always one of my favourite places. Seating was perfect for family visit. Music was canned and a little loud in our seating area. I prefer to be near the piano at Christmas. Will make sure I mention that next time.
The Butchart Gardens High Tea is in the most beautiful setting. In early January, we had high tea at 3:00 pm, which meant that we got to enjoy tea while watching the holiday lights come on as twilight approached. So relaxing, yet energizing. Highly recommend it!
We’ve been to this restaurant several times and it is lovely place to visit when hosting guests from out of town. Service is prompt and friendly and it feels like a treat. The food was just a bit too salty this time though, although presented well. Also, the prices seemed a bit higher than normal.
Really enjoyed the ambiance of the dining room. Even with a large group at the next table we were able to enjoy our dinner. Each of us had a different entire and no one was disappointed. Wonderful meal and atmosphere. Server was knowledgeable about the food. Good selection of wines. Will definitely go again
Excellent meal, so beautifully presented. Our server was very friendly, however, she was a little scarce later in the meal for additional coffee service. Gorgeous setting with all the festive lighting and view outside the conservatory. The only negative was the noise from cutlery being dropped on the ceramic floor 4 separate times by a bus person... everyone stopped at the noise. Perhaps more training on how to deal with heavy handled knives when clearing tables? This is our 18th year of dinner as friends at the Dining Room at Christmas and we will be back next year for sure.
The ambiance was lovely, it was quite cozy and comfortable despite the rain outside. Our server was knowledgeable but we felt the food was overpriced especially considering you had to pay to get in which we didn’t realize. Because the rain was so bad when we went (January 2/2020), we thought w just might have dinner but found out at the entrance booth that we still had to pay for two adults even to access the restaurant.
We found the menu innovative for the Christmas season but flavours were a bit strong in some of the dishes (wagyu beef w strong salty anchovy, and Ling cod broth spicy peppery).
Additionally the road to such a well travelled place is not the best, especially trying to turn left against ferry traffic onto Keating cross road is quite tough.
Excellent, lovely for an annual birthday treat
Always end our festive season with this visit, as our bdays are 1st week in January good place to celebrate 🎉 🎉
Really nice supper, good food, good waiter. Really nice setting.
Great view of the Christmas lights and wonderful food.
For New Year's Eve...it was absolutely incredible, the live piano music and the meal was exceptional, flavorful, service was on point, a perfect evening! Thank you!!!!!!
Excellent treat for New Years Eve after the gorgeous Gardens!
Skip the after dinner esspresso, everything else I would order again!
The restaurant and, of course, the gardens are beautiful
Service was outstanding
Food presentation and selection was great
Bread was excellent
Very expensive for what you get. With the cost of the park entrance and then the pricey choices, it ends up being a very expensive meal.
Food was mediocre. We had the lingcod, lamb, Caesar salad and creme brûlée. Lingcod was over salted and I think there was a bad mussel as I was sick for the next 24 hours. Lamb was ok, but a very small serving for the price. Creme brûlée honestly tasted like packaged vanilla pudding.
Had the prices been more reasonable, I would not have been as critical of the food.
I will never eat here again as I would rather spend money on an exceptional meal outside the park and just eat a sandwich while at the gardens. Had such high hopes as this restaurant was highly recommended by a friend.
We booked for 4 pm new year eve dinner only to be told dinner did not start until 5pm. Thankfully they had a table at 5. No where did it say that only tea was served from 1-4 pm.
The best gluten free high tea I’ve ever had. Other places give you a chocolate peanut butter ball and a gluten free cookie from a box (not that I’m not grateful for that, too!). BG actually duplicated all of the items in the regular tea, including pastry items like mini quiches and sausage rolls. The house is beautiful and cozy, especially at Christmastime. The tea itself didn’t quite match up to that I had at the Empress (though I paid a surcharge there), but overall everything was so lovely.
Both the food and service were impeccable! This was our first time to have tea at Butchart Gardens, even though we only live 2 blocks away. We bought a seasons pass on our way out of the Gardens so that we can now go back on a monthly basis!!
Family Holiday Memories
A fabulous high tea in a beautiful setting! Price is decent too. Would definitely got back soon.
To make your 12 Days of Christmas tour perfect, end it at the Butchart Gardens Dining Room. The menu is perfect, the food superb, the ambiance relaxing (loved the piano), and the service is professional and friendly.
Excellent atmosphere, food and service. Wonderful experience!
Pretty good food overall, a bit pricey. The gardens were beautiful so the ambiance was nice.
12 days of Christmas event and we decided a Afternoon Tea
I was not happy with the tea. This is the 5th time I have brought people for tea but it was not as good this time.
I would highly recommend tea at Butchart! Everything was fabulous from start to finish,we couldn’t have been more pleased! In fact, if I lived on the island, I would get the yearly pass- can’t beat the value or the full experience- simply a beautiful place with great staff!!
Great experience for an 80th birthday. Thanks to the gardens for such a thoughtful service for Victoria's senior residents. Definitely the best value in town.
My wife and I took our daughter and son-in-law for dinner and we were all extremely impressed with both the service, the presentation, and the quality of the food. While not inexpensive, we enjoyed all the courses from the starters through to the desserts. Menu and drink selections were ample. Staff appeared well trained and knowledgeable. It is truly an excellent place to go for that special occasion.
Imaginative cuisine in a lovely environment. Our server was friendly and gracious, the hostess was polite and accommodating, and the food was superb. Just make sure to order the salmon medium-rare, as they typically prepare it a bit overdone at medium (probably for food safety reasons).
Elegant setting. Very nice presentation. Good service. Great tea. Sandwiches and scones were excellent. Sweets were a overwhelmingly rich and sweet. Would have liked a few lighter desserts. We left many. Everything else was excellent.
One of our most favorite places to have dinner in the Victoria area no matter the season. True fine dining. Lovely views of the gardens, elegant dining room, live piano playing softly in the background, some outdoor tables weather permitting. Quite romantic. Great place for foodies! Lots of creative and fresh dishes using local and seasonal ingredients. We enjoy wine and honestly have a hard time finding even decent wine in Canada. (Sorry.) Surprisingly, they offer do a few good local wine options! And on this most recent visit we discovered a super unique, not-too-sweet honey liqueur in their dessert menu! Staff is warm, knowledgeable and professional. Note: This isn’t the place for young children, or loud/poorly behaved children of any age, or electronics, or phones. This is not meant to be inexpensive. No giant plates of food offered. From downtown Victoria, the best plan would be to hire a taxi, a private driver, or take the tour bus. The tour bus isn’t so bad, and the last departure back to Victoria leaves at 9pm. Important: never drink and drive in BC! Plan ahead and make reservations for a wonderful day and evening at the Butchart Gardens!! We always love it!
We enjoyed a delightful dinner celebrating our 47th anniversary with dinner at the Butchart Gardens dining room. The service, ambience and food were excellent. We were quite well pleased.
Our meal in the dining room was the best either of us had ever had in Victoria, where we have lived for over 10 years.
We attended our annual visit to Butchart Gardens to see the Xmas lights and enjoy a birthday dinner in the dining room. Missed the lights due to traffic wait but that was due to us not checking website and allocating more time. Easy fix was buying our annual passes and will come back to see them. Dinner was outstanding as usual and will be back within month for “Dine around Victoria “ experience
Lovely all round experience. No single aspect was outstanding but the experience is hard to match. Service is nice and efficient, not personable, a little rushed. It is nice to see the gardens but not all seats allow this. Plenty of food and variety but less food made with more attention to flavor and variety would elevate the experience. More reasonable price than Empress tea, and a bit less noisy.
The food was great, in Spring it was superb! Some of the other diners were in the family restaurant mode which spoilt the overall experience of an elegant restaurant.
A few quiet phots is a lovely souvenir but getting up and about and crowding around other tables for umpteen shots was a little much.
Our waiter was wonderful.
There is never a time I do not tell someone visiting Victoria that the Garden Tea is the best! We look forward every a Christmas to our visit to Victoria and the Garden Tea. Thank you all for making our Holidays the very best. Rosemary
The Dining Room at Butchart Gardens was a wonderful experience for our visit. The service was wonderful, the setting was beautiful, and the food was good. The menu is seasonal so the food changes. Our crimini mushroom veloute soup was delicious, as was the beet and burrata salad. The Cowichan chicken dish was fine, but the walnut gruyere bread pudding was like a dry brick and not to my taste. My husband had the pork loin chop- it was a little tough but he liked it. The beef tenderloin and lamb were excellent. Overall a good dining experience.
Definitely a good recommendation for anyone wanting a great meal with superior service and details to the food and drinks.
A cut above your "Casual" restaurant but worth the money.
