Great food and service! Only reason not a 5 was the ambiance. Not bad but could be a little cozier. However, the staff mentioned the coming renovations and we look forward to our future visit!
Just the right place to find delicious food--nice variety on the menu--and a quiet enough atmosphere to hear your friends speak!
Mediocre food - terrible service - unapologetic. Would avoid.
New Year’s Eve dining with what we were told was a fixed menu, all though others ordered off the regular menu after us. The pairing of courses and choices were not appealing (shots between courses, maybe consider sorbet). The filet was very good. All other courses were odd, unappealing, and tasted bad! All with $158 price tag not including tip. Won’t go back, not worth it. Suggest that they taste the food before serving. Manager new we were unhappy with meal, never approached to try and accommodate.
My husband and I have gone here for Christmas dinner for the past four years. Our food and service has been consistently wonderful. My husband can't stop raving about how awesome the fish and chips were. The beer was cold and our server was wonderful.
Best filet I have had in 20 yrs. Awesome pork belly. Excellent appetizers. Fabulous waiter. Will now be a regular.
We had a lovely lunch and the service was great ! The waiting staff was extremely nice ! The food was delicious !
New menu food was excellent, prices seemed to have increased.
The Thanksgiving buffet left a lot to be desired. Our server was fabulous, but had too many tables to keep up. The buffet was often out of an item, and people would stand their waiting for it to be noticed and then replenished causing traffic jams, etc. The food was okay for a buffet, nothing stellar. The pies were "store bought" and ran out frequently resulting in really long dessert lines.
Thanksgiving dinner was excellent. The delicious turkey and prime rib were served at carving stations, and I enjoyed the vegetables, salads, and desserts too. I plan to go back for Thanksgiving and on some other occasions too.
Overcooked Food, had to change my order three times before they had something in the kitchen arrived dry adn nearly not edible for 34 dollars. Will never return.
Good food and great service in this boutique hotel restaurant. Full bar and quiet at 8pm.
Had to move from outside table to inside due flies getting into our food, there were flies bothering inside as well. The chicken salad sandwich was very good. The green salad with grilled chicken was very disappointing: the salad was meager and uninteresting, and greens limp. Chicken was good. We asked for a side of bread and got three slices of stale bread with no butter.
Excellent in every way! The mussels were the best I have ever had! Great place to go before or after a play at MSMT. We have eaten in the courtyard in the past and loved it!
Very nice setting great food. A bit pricey for salad and crab cakes but enjoyed it
This was our first time at The Brunswick Tavern and we will not be back. The restaurant was extremely loud, service was forgetful and slow, and the food was bad. My wife ordered the duck which came out COLD, not even warm it was cold. She sent it back to the kitchen and it was returned on a warmer plate but the entree was still barely room temperature. Her whole entree was disappointing, not only was it cold but also lacking flavor. Save yourself the hassle and expense; go somewhere else.
We had a delicious meal before heading over to the music theater which is right across the street.
Food was cold or over cooked. One portion of the haddock was two bite at most. It’s a shame as it’s a nice venue and great location. Managment needs to get on it.
It seemed a tad overpriced for the quality of the meal. There were too few items on the menu.
We had our wedding reception here in 2015 and came back to celebrate our 3rd Anniversary! This place never disappoints!! Our server was extra attentive and even stepped in to play photographer and wished us a Happy Anniversary. All of other dining experiences here have been just as stellar!!
Very quaint and pleasant
Food took forever, waitress couldn’t be bothered to explain the full specials menu, and portion sizes were laughable for the salmon and caesar salad. For the cost, this was in no way worth the money. Lots of potential in the cozy, convenient spot, but you just keep missing the mark.
We reserved for 6pm pre theater dinner. Arrived on time and immediately seated.New menu main course selections very limited, e.g. Crab Cakes full meal now relegated to Appetizer ( 3 miniature). No daily specials. We were served at 6:45. Waitress apologized saying kitchen overwhelmed. Some 30+ walk ins in addition to 29 reservations. We had to depart at 7pm to walk to theater, thus no time for desert. Very disappointing dinner!
Have dined there pre-theater past month and for several summers. Pleased with new chef, until he recently changed the menu
Service is disorganized and slow. Food can be good.
Special occasion for a child in our group, as noted on the reservation, but the restaurant did nothing to make it special. Table right next to the door...lots of noise and traffic nearby.
Food was good enough. Steak on Caesar salad was over done and cold, but still tasty. Children’s pasta dish was sticky and chewy. Salmon on mixed salad was good. Children’s chicken fingers good. Had to ask for kids menus.
Didn’t see the specials until dessert...they’re on the same board.
The Tavern finally has an excellent chef who is using locally sourced meats, produce, and seafood to serve up interesting meals. As a hotel dining room it continues to provide standard offerings ( fish and chips, a good clam chowder, sandwiches and burgers, and Caesar salads with steak, salmon, and shrimp add ons) but the other night I opted for Moule Frites with Boursin Aoli ( sic ) and a white wine sauce with pork lardons and tomatoes. Very tasty! The flabby lardons would benefit from crisping instead of being submerged in the broth but on the whole an excellent dish.
In the summer the Maine State Music Theater next door attracts pre- theater diners. To meet the evening rush the Tavern provides light, reasonably priced standards. However, if diners have the time the chef also provides a number of interesting alternatives focusing on duck ( sweet and sour, and a confit taco) a gravlax blini, and composed salads. The Tavern offers only one dedicated vegetarian main featuring radish, beet, and Swiss chard.
The Tavern features a variety of Maine craft beers as well as old faithfuls in the bottle. They also offer interesting cocktails.
The staff, as always, is professionally friendly and willing to suggest offerings that children may enjoy.
This was our fourth time here this summer and it's not going very well. I had the lobster roll which was good but suffered from a price tag of $29. For this one would expect claw, knuckle and tail meat; this one however had only claw meat. For this price this is not good.
My wife had the fish and chips and I believe the fish was frozen, then fried. Again, not really state of the art.
We have been dining fairly regularly since the tavern opened. During the summer at least every three weeks before attending the Maine State Music Theater. During the last three weeks, since the first performance at MSMT the menu changed. It is much more limited, and more pub fare than a dinner experience. Gone are the best, wonderful salad with greens, berries, cheese and toasted pecans. Gone are steak, fish of the day. Gone are the gelato flavors of the day from Gelato Fiasco. We shared the salad on the menu with no choice of dressing and a pitiful set of greens. We both settled for fish and chips, which seemed unchanged. The waitress warned us that the dessert selections were small now. She should have said they were mini. We both had the blueberry Creme brûlée, which was four bites served in a ramekin of possibly 2.5” and the brûlée itself was not more than 1:2” deep. Quite tasty but pathetic. We will not return. It is very obvious that management’s directive to the new chef, of three months, was cut cost. We believe this will result in far less diners. They have most certainly lost us and friends that we used to bring with us. Very disappointed, to say the least.
Everything was great at the Tavern!
Event:MSMT everything was great except food was not cooked to order but over cooked
Convenient location. Great outdoor seating and live entertainment.
Great atmosphere, food was just ok.
Great location for walk across street to MSMT show. Nice ambiance but we were seated in the bar next to kitchen and it was loud (including the staff). The food was mediocre at best. Wedge salad was not a wedge, most like a bitter pile of mixed greens with a few pecans and bleu cheese dressing. My boyfriend had the fish and chips which he enjoyed but said the breading was a little on the soggy side. The staff did well getting our food and check to us in time for the show.
The Brunswick Tavern did not disappoint. From start to finish, reservations, seating, service and food we're all right on. I must say that our waitress was one of the best I've had the good fortune to wait on us. She impressed me from start to finish, prompt, knew the menu thru and thru, answered our questions, had a good natured way about herself and a positive energetic attitude. I could tell she enjoyed working at The Tavern. This was not our first experience at the tavern but this young lady made it the most memorable
The restaurant has a new chef who is bringing a much needed fresh approach to the menu. The menu hasn't yet changed, but is due to change within the next few weeks. But he is doing much more with the existing menu, using much fresher ingredients, perfectly prepared, as well as adding a bit of creativity to a few of the dishes as well as the specials. Carla did her usual spectacular job as our server, and Johann and the rest of the crew made sure our multiple visits for food and drink were as enjoyable as possible. Highly recommended, and it will get better when the new menu rolls out and a planned renovation takes place.
I live in Brunswick and go here frequently. It can be both casual and upscale. I will say that the new menu seems a bit too eclectic for general dining, and the pricing is comparatively high for vegetarian dishes. I miss the risotto !!!!!
But overall, good location for friends and family!
the cheese plate appetizer was good, however, I've never seen such a huge amount of fried batter surrounding my piece of haddock - there was hardly any fish in there and was mostly batter which I was able to remove with some difficulty. Also, my friend had the crab cakes, which were just acceptable and the Manhattan cocktail I had seemed almost watered down -was very light colored. All in all, I will not plan to go there again unless I hear about some improvements. NIce atmosphere, but horrible food and drink. I would not recommend to our Brunswick friends.
We wanted to take my mom someplace special for Mother's Day. Unfortunately the Brunswick Tavern didn't deliver. The menu didn't make sense, the food in some of the chafers was dried out. The bacon was undercooked and sitting in grease. The pork was dry. There were no vegetables. The chocolate torte was served in a pile of pieces that looked like a jumble. Plates waited on the tables and were slow to be cleared. The bloody mary was weak--both in tomato, and spice. I couldn't tell about the vodka. And coffee was an upcharge. At brunch. This was not their finest hour. We've given this place a couple of chances and it's just not good. We won't go back.
Thank you for making Mother's Day a truly special occasion this year. Excellent service paired with wonderful food made it all perfect for our group.
We went for Mother's Day Brunch. I should have checked the brunch price before we went. I was surprised how expensive it was. It is a good value if you are a huge meat eater, but as vegetarians, the options were decent, but not worth the $40+ price tag per meal. The good was good, the atmosphere was pleasant and the server was attentive.
