The Broad Chare
Upstairs in the Dining Room, it’s all reassuringly simple with solid wood tables, sturdy schoolroom chairs and shiny brass coat-hooks.

Lovely meal. Great service.
Very much enjoyed good quality food and great atmosphere for a more than reasonable price. Ideal gastro pub setting.
One of our group of 6 got held up in bank holiday traffic and consequently 30mins late. However the sharp manner of one of the staff when he said hurry up and order, or order on behalf of the latecomer because the chef was due to finish, was pretty disappointing. The table was booked for 2:30 on Easter Sat afternoon. If this is too late for the Chef, don't offer the table!
Lunch on good Friday afternoon was fantastic. Drinks before hand in the traditional bar which had a lovely friendly atmosphere followed by a 3 course lunch with traditional but very well cooked and presented food washed down with a couple of bottles of red wine. A little more expensive than other venues but you get what you pay for. Recommend the daily specials and is a must try if you haven't been before.
Beautiful food although a little pricey for Sunday lumch
Not the first time here and never been disappointed. The food excellent and a little different and the service excellent. Will definitely be going back.
Excellent as always. Apéritifs, wine and beers were all of a high quality and the starters, mains and puds were delicious. Would recommend.
Table was ready when most of us arrived early so we were served drinks at the table. Very welcoming staff and helpful menu advice. Food and ambience superb. We spent over two hours over lunch - our choice: the service was efficient. No hurry to boot us out!
Went specifically for Sunday Lunch, not the first time that we have been, on the last occasion I had the Pork and Lisa had the Lamb, the pork was delicious but Lisa has raved about the Lamb ever since, therefore we both had lamb this time and left totally satisfied, a beautiful lunch that’s as good as anything else on offer in Newcastle city centre. Highly recommend the Broad Chare for your Sunday lunch, it’s always busy which speaks volume about the quality of the experience.
Food was absolutely gorgeous
Wrong choice of wine was made but staff and company were great.
Excellent food as usual with great service. The selection of food in innovative with some classic dishes with a twist.
Great visit to the Broad Chare - first time for my wife though I’ve been before. Starters and mains were excellent - clearly fresh and locally made. Service was spot on and the dining area itself is lovely - nice compliment to the traditional bar downstairs.
My only small issue is the application of 10% gratuity to every bill. I generally tip much higher than this but prefer this to be my choice as a recognition of good service, rather than a given. I’d suggest limiting the application as a standard to groups of 6 or more for instance.
So glad we found this fabulous gastropub on Tripadvisor. Outstanding food and friendly service. My seatrout was perfect and thank you for introducing me to Alexanders - I now plan to go foraging for them !
Lovely meal in a lovely setting. Waitress was outstanding. Steak was not a great cut and it was taken off the bill with no quarrel. Would highly recommend eating here.
High quality food with friendly service in a relaxed setting
My second visit in as many weeks - this time for Mothering Sunday. Again the food was fabulous. Thank you for the surprise of the afternoon tea voucher for my Mam as it made her day.
Really excellent food and service
Great night had by all we had the steak
My husband was raving about the calf’s liver
Loved it beautifully crafted dinner
The welcome was friendly, a good selection of drinks and an appetising menu. Service was prompt (we had a train to catch and staff were accommodating) and the food lived up to its billing. We will definitely go back the next time we are in Newcastle.
Really impressed. Excellent food, reasonably priced, friendly and professional staff. And no screaming babies!
Food was excellent. However adding a discretionary service charge when it’s not really discretionary was a bit annoying.
Always high quality food and service. Helpful staff running a well organised restaurant. Relaxed bar area with a good choice of real ales and wine reasonably priced. The Broad Chare is a regular place for our Sunday lunch and certainly the place to beat in Newcastle.
Great food and friendly service. Well priced. Would highly recommend.
A group of friends visiting from Norway, sightseeing in Newcastle. Enjoyed a very good meal at The Broad Share!
Fabulous food, lovely wine, helpful, friendly staff.
Excelent quality and service. To repeat at any time.
Had the 1 Kg rump steak to share between two, which was outstanding and more than we could finish. Would highly recommend
I have visited the Broad Chare a few times in the past and always found the food and service very good
This time was underwhelming though.
My colleague chose the burger option and it was not worth the asking price.
The burger was small, poorly garnished with only some limp lettuce and cheese and the chips resembled cheap oven chips
I had the plaice and although good I felt it was lacking in accompaniaments.
Service was very good though I felt that the mandatory 10% service charge struck the wrong note. I was prepared anyway to tip for the service we received, but should not have been forced into it.
I think this will be the last time I visit
Beautifully cooked food, great service - made my wife's birthday, which was the objective!
Always great food and great service when I visit! Definitely recommend.
Sunday lunch was very enjoyable, despite inattentive service. Food was good, although the variety of veg served with the meal left a little to be desired (essentially carrots and potatoes to add to the potatoes and carrot mash served with the meal). It needed a reminder to get our water at the start of the meal; and after eating our main course were left wondering whether anyone would ever ask us if we wanted desert. Wine was excellent, though top could have been unscrewed at the table and poured (rather than having two glasses and an open bottle simply put on the table). So high marks for quality of food and portion size, but let down by mediocre service, almost to the point of withholding the discretionary 10% service charge.
We had Sunday lunch, very good food, great service, definitely going back.
Fantastic place, food was superb, great menu, nice selection of drinks and a well informed staff, all in all we really enjoyed and are already planning a trip back
Lovely evening great food. Restaurant very busy but lively atmosphere and excellent service
Fabulous in every way. Had the steak and kidney pudding which was amazing! Great friendly service
Very relaxed feel to this pub. I took an American friend as she wanted something with a olde English feel and this ticked all of the boxes. The mince and dumplings were a triumph.
Really enjoyed our meal at the Broad Chare. Great attentive service and freshly cooked food.
High level of noise from the road works outside but this can’t be helped and I am sure will only be temporary.
Our second visit to The Broad Chare was as enjoyable as the first and left us wishing we lived nearer! The atmosphere is friendly, not too noisy with a buzz of folk enjoying the delicious food,! We chose the Saturday night pie which was delicious and loved the starters of crackling with Apple sauce and cauliflower fritters with curried mayonnaise. Wish we could work our way through the weeks menus but live in Hampshire! Great service and good prices.
Firstly, the ambience and authenticity of this building is something that is very charming. I felt very comfortable during my visit. The food was delicious and plentiful. The service we received was efficient, friendly and informative. Overall, I had a great time and I'm looking forward to coming back. As a final point, the food is more diverse than I originally anticipated, which ultimately is a good thing as it prompted me to be more adventurous than I otherwise would be! 10/10
