The Broad Chare
Upstairs in the Dining Room, it’s all reassuringly simple with solid wood tables, sturdy schoolroom chairs and shiny brass coat-hooks.

Staff welcoming and friendly. Good choices on menu. Wide variation of drinks available. Food served in reasonable time after ordering. Presentation good and food tasty to eat. Wait staff attentive but not intrusive.
Good range of fresh seafood dishes. Portions are a decent size. Waiting staff are friendly and informative about the menu.
What a wonderful find!! From start to finish we were looked after so well by the staff. Such a good choice of food, we loved the mackerel pate, everything was perfect. Big thanks to all.
Amazing food. Service was bad. Took 15 mins to get anyones attention for the bill and then 10 mins to pay. 1st course took 50 mins. Waiting staff need to up their game.
Food was good rather than outstanding. One starter served without its sauce so not a great start. Otherwise all ok
Great meal again. Lovely staff who couldn’t be more attentive. Best place in Newcastle for Sunday lunch and at any other time of the day.
Great food, great service
Had a wonderful night. Steak was cooked to perfection, well done that chef!
I would just like to thank all the staff for our visit to the restaurant yesterday. It was my Mothers 70th birthday and I could not fault the service and attention shown to us throughout our meal. I had asked the restaurant to make a cake (carrot being her favourite), they did not disappoint an absolutely outstanding end to what was already a memorable meal.
You have made her weekend!
As always it is my first choice when on the Quayside and always highly recommend you to family and friends!
Didn’t order a starter as we all were having main course and dessert. Waited a long time for food to arrive. This has happened before in Cafe 21 which is owned by the same owner. Then we were told it was because we didn’t order a starter! Doesn’t make sense. Anyway the food was delicious and enjoyed by all. Chicken pie with either chips and vegetables and cod. Staff very good. Have never had a poor meal here. 10%service charge always added to your bill here.
Overall a pretty good meal. I came here with my parents and we were all happy with the food but the service could have been better. First of all, the jug that the iced water was served in was hot which made the water room temperature. Secondly, we ordered a bottle of New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc but received the Chilian wine instead even though the New Zealand wine was recommended to us in the first place. There was also a slight wait for food, this was due to the fact the waiter forgot to put our food through the till. I work in hospitality myself so I understand everyone makes mistakes, however an indication to how long our food was going to be would have been ideal. We did receive a check back on our food, however, it was before we even started eating! About 30 seconds after serving us our food is when we were asked if our meals were okay. Obviously at this point we hadn’t even tried our meal so we couldn’t give an answer. I’m not sure if the waiter was new or not? He just looked a bit flustered and unsure of what he was doing. We did also wait 10/15 minutes for our plates to be taken away after each course. It would have also been nice if the waiters and waitresses were overall a bit ‘nicer’ and smiled more. It wasn’t at all awful service but it definitely wasn’t 5* to say this is a Michelin Guide recommended pub. Nevertheless, the chefs did a great job - the food was lovely.
Interesting menu. Great appetisers. Main courses were really good apart from my fish cakes pretty uninteresting and dry but the others chose well and the food was delicious. Wine came unchilled so had to change. Overall good value.
Visited many times, always enjoyable and always great service.
Always a very enjoyable evening with tasty, inventive, locally sourced food and a relaxed ambiance. Perfect for a pre- Live Theatre meal
Always superb can't fault food or service and if ever there is something you aren't happy with the staff will do their utmost to rectify the issue
Six of us went there on Tuesday for a well earned catch up. This was second time there as last time was so good.
The food was exceptional. We decided on six different starters to try them out. They were all brilliant. Haggis was exceptional. Main courses we all agreed were top class. Sea food we agreed was best choice but I had the black pudding...amazing
Many thanks for a great day.
Really good food, we had the Roast beef and the Cod topped with crushed hazelnuts, both were cooked wonderfully
Was in Newcastle area and wanted a Sunday roast for me and my partner. The Broad Chare had good online reviews. We booked online and our experience was great. Staff were friendly, attentive but never pushy. Beer, food, décor was perfect for us and reasonably priced. Venue became busier whilst we were there, so atmosphere was a good mixture of couples, families, friends etc. We would definitely go back and have no hesitation to recommend.
12 of us had a great lunch to celebrate a dear friend’s birthday. Fab starters, especially the haggis on toast, and the bar snacks are great. The Monday special of mince and dumplings was excellent. Staff friendly as always. Works really well with the bar downstairs.
My favourite restaurant in Newcastle - especially when I want to impress visitors to the city. I always go for one of the fish specials and it's always delicious. Very tasty dessert too and a good choice of wines.
Excelent environment. Food was perfect and the service also excelent.
I have been here a few times now and I am never disappointed. The food is lovely and the atmosphere in the restaurant is really good. Would definitely recommend a visit. Not the cheapest of menus but worth it for a special occasion.
The atmosphere here is pleasant and relaxed. The food is always good quality and tasty. If I had one slight criticism it's that there isn't a great deal of choice for vegetarians or vegans. It would be good to see a bit more thought going into that. The beers are first class and the choice is eye-popping.
Great food, plentiful, well presented and served promptly. The Lindisfarne oysters were plump and delicious. We all chose the dish of the day, Chicken Pie - nothing was left on any plate!
By mistake I ordered the wrong beer, but this was rectified instantly.
You can always rely on this pub/restaurant.
I went with my wife for our anniversary lunch. We both really enjoyed the food and the ambience. The service was excellent, prompt and friendly. The beer was also superb.
Lovely meal, good selection on menu, like that there are small eats and starters that you can mix up.
However, disagree that any restaurant that insists on adding a service charge. Staff are paid a wage to do a service and likely get paid more than my office job!
Loved it - visiting son at university . Prefect ! Son and my husband had the steak to share they said it was the best steak they had ever had ! Really lovely buzzy pub type atmosphere - would definitely go back !
Lovely atmosphere with great food. Could have ordered everything off the menu. Staff were lovely, we'll definitely be returning.
I wanted a friendly pub that did amazing food - and this is exactly what I got. Unpretentious, reasonably priced, delicious... definitely worth a stop if you’re in Newcastle and want something that is going to fill you up and put a smile on your face.
Our first visit to the restaurant although we've been in the bar lots of times. Loved the food because we could choose small plates and share them. Having said that the main courses on offer were attractive. The room is pleasant as are the staff. I'd thoroughly recommend The Broad Chare.
As ever, great food and decent beers. Never disappointed at Broad Chare
Recommended by a friend for its beer selection and my wife had read that it was recommended for food by Nigella Lawson so I booked for a meal before we went to a gig at The Sage. The beer was excellent and so was the food. I would thoroughly recommend it for both.
Spotted it on instagram and as I'm not from Newcastle I was happy to take Nigella's recommendation. Great venue for lunch with the family whilst visiting my daughter at University. The food was excellent and the staff very friendly.
Food as always was excellent. Great atmosphere and excellent service
Excellent as always. We both had liver and onions! Delicious.
Excellent food, excellent service. Would recommend the shoulder of lamb which serves 5/6.
The usual good food and service for group of 14 , very prompt attention and good atmosphere
Great restaurant with lovely food and the staff were fasntasic all you could ask for.
Very noisy upstairs dining - wooden floor made it noisier. Disabled access impossible for upstairs dining.
