The Broad Chare
Upstairs in the Dining Room, it’s all reassuringly simple with solid wood tables, sturdy schoolroom chairs and shiny brass coat-hooks.

Super steaks as always.
Delicious food and friendly staff every visit. I've never had a bad meal here.
When my family visit from Yorkshire this is our favourite place for lunch.
The food was amazing with a great variety of reworked favourites. The writers block pale ale was excellent. The staff couldn't of been more attentive and friendly. Excellent
Excellent food in good surroundings. Only reappointment was when we asked for detail on one of the starters the waiting staff did not know and had to check with the kitchen.
We shared a variety of dishes. As usual the scotch egg was perfect. We would thoroughly recommend the potted shrimps. Staff lovely so no negative comments at all.
Absolutely lovely, excellent food, good service with friendly staff and a relaxed atmosphere.
I took some visitors from the US who really enjoyed their visit as well as the food which was as usual top rate. The only let down was the speed of service. The restaurant was not busy but it took longer than we have experienced in the past for the food to arrive. Once we had finished our main course, we were ignored, despite there being only one other table occupied. In the end we skipped coffees and desert and asked for the bill. In my experience this was not the norm and will not put me off going there again.
Staff amazingly attentive he’s very welcoming, friendly & helpful. Truly fabulous place!
Food was first class, vet tastey. Staff were pleasant would definitely return although as a vegetarian there is limited choice.
Great ambiance, great vibe and superb food. A table of very loud women near us made it a little difficult to talk easily, but not too bad. Easily overcome by the flavours of the food - soft, delicate trout with various beets in a salad were fabulous, and then beautifully cooked lamb and excellent vegetables, lovely wine, lovely puds, great service - friendly and efficient. Altogether, a really great experience.
Fab evening with family.
Staff are very welcoming .
Food super the menu is quite querky in parts but dont
be put off by this.
One of us ordered pigs head and it was
beautifully presented and delicious.
We all had a taste!
We all had a delicious meal.
Empty plates all round. We will definitely go back!
Great beers, good food and lovely staff. Handy for parking and city centre.
The serving staff were superb, the food and ambience were amazing as ever,we were made to feel special by everybody and we will be back again very soon
All agree it’s a great place to eat. Staff attentive but not overwhelming, good combination. Food, beer spot on.
Lovely family Sunday lunch 🍴 very accommodating staff lovely beef and lamb yummy .
Great food, great service, great beer. What more do you need for Sunday lunch?
Superb as always
High quality, utterly consistent, always delicious, no nonsense food. Simply the best restaurant I know, bang for buck.
really good service, had a fantastic Megrim (Cornish sole) off the specials, & delicious puddings
I have been to the Broad Chare on a number of occasions and I am never disappointed with the quality of the food on offer. Although they have the daily main courses which do not change, the specials are varied and make it worth coming back. On this occasion I had a Mangra fish which was superb and I have never had this before, but will definitely keep an eye out for it if it was cooked as well as this. The service was friendly and the food arrived promptly so we were not waiting too long between courses. It's always good to wash this down with a pint of the Writer's Block!
Good start to having lunch out, the restaurant staff are confident about the restaurant and the quality of the food. Whilst the food was good in parts I found the roast potatoes disappointing compared to previous visits and the veg some what boring. They have also increased the cost of the lunch.
The service was perfect, the food was very rich but portions not too heavy, a decent balance. Can't fault the service or the ambiance.
I do however take exception to the "discretionary" service charge added to bill. Normally we would tip over 10% however because this was automatically added to bill we chose not to.
This is the only fault really i/we had with the overall experience.
Excellent food matched by excellent service from all staff members.
The Broad Chare never disappoints. This is now my sixth visit and the food has always been outstanding, the service attentive but never intrusive. I will always make a dinner reservation at the Broad Chare if I am in Newcastle. With easy multi-storey parking nearby, on some visits we have been lucky enough to get a space in the road outside. The specials are always worth a look and I heartily recommend the Autumn Salad, there's nothing on the menu that will not delight your tastebuds, local dishes especially. Steak comes exactly as you order it, salads are crisp and tasty.
Modern day style menu mostly not to my taste but the Ribeye Steak I had was cooked as requested and very good. Service good but the waitress could not tell me what the 2 ingredients were that I had not heard of. Split my wine and it was guickly cleaned up and my glass was refilled f.o.c. 10% service charge auomatically added to bill which I happily paid.
One of the best burgers I’ve had in Newcastle. The broad Chare never fails to disappoint - always an exciting and innovative menu and great atmosphere. Although, slightly too loud for my liking. However, the good food makes up for it.
I have never been disappointed by an evening meal here - this most recent visit was no exception. Thank you.
Took partner for a birthday lunch. Food was great. Location and ambience just right.
This dinner was for a special occasion and did not disappoint. The service was lovely, the food was very tasty and fresh and the beer and wine list was outstanding. I haven't been there for a long time and I must admit, the first time I went, I was underwhelmed with the food, however, this time it was so much improved and I would definitely return (actually tonight for some beer!)
As always The Broad Chare doesn’t fail to impress. Great food and attentive staff who always have a smile on their faces. The wine list is good, and it still hasn’t lost its traditional feel.
Another great meal with attentive and friendly service. Roast cod was excellent.
Fab Sunday lunch, we brought friends for the first time and they were really pleased with our recommendation
Table booked for 17.45 and we were allowed to sit there a bit earlier which was nice of them. The atmosphere and service was very pleasant and food very good except a bowl of greens as an extra side dish was very small and just curly cabbage! By the time we had finished at 7.30 it was full and so noisy we couldn't carry on our conversation so were glad to be leaving.
Great food and choice. Well looked after by Staff. Great ambience and real buzz around the restaurant. Never disappointed - will be back again. Car parking at the local multi storey is free at night so added bonus. Would highly recommend this restaurant.
Lovely location down near the Quayside. Food was delicious, we had steak and shared a dessert. Staff were attentive and happy to recommend dishes to us. Good atmosphere without being noisy.
Great place... great staff
Lovely tasty food again. Not quite sure what vegetables were included with some dishes. Pleasant staff and atmosphere during a fairly quiet lunch time catch up with old friends.
mackerel dish from the specials was particularly tasty.
We have eaten at several of Mr Layburns restaurants and whilst they have always been good , I have noticed the food and service has recently dropped from its usual very high quality.
The exception being Saltwater Fish which is always exceptional
Excellent, good, honest British food
Best in Newcastle
A perfectly acceptable gastro pub which is in a great location on The Quayside
