The Broad Chare
Upstairs in the Dining Room, it’s all reassuringly simple with solid wood tables, sturdy schoolroom chairs and shiny brass coat-hooks.

Excellent service and very friendly staff. The food was fresh, very tasty and well-presented.
Booked here for Saturday night get together with 6 friends. Fantastic food, great vibe and all in excellent evening. Good value for money too. Friends loved the liver & onions & vegetarian choices. Fab night! 😊
Quality of food was amazingly good and service was wonderful. Quite a unique pub in the heart of Newcastle.
It was great, as usual. Couldn't fault it. Thanks!
Delicious food. Great service. Good value for us as Newcastle Dining Week but could otherwise be a little pricey
Excellent food and service as always from one of my favourite Newcastle restaurants. Thanks Broad Chare!
We go to this restaurant a lot and the food is amazing as always. The improvements that could be made are : shorten the waiting time between starters and mains - had to wait quite a long time. We have been coming here for a good 5 years and unfortunately over the past year the service has deteriorated:- waitresses bumping into your chair as you’re eating and not asking if you would like a dessert, we had to initiate this. All said and done we will still be returning but thought you needed to be aware of small improvements that could be made.
Chose to visit on Newcastle Resaurant Week and ate from the specially selected menu. Food was good and great value for money. The atmosphere is vibrant and the decor rustic and in keeping with the ‘quayside’ location.
Amazing food. Pigs head and black pudding croquettes followed by hake. Great service. Great atmosphere and food value.
The best roast dinner I’ve had in many years. Beef cooked to perfection, great vegetable sides and fantastic service.
Such a let down , I waste ally looking forward to eating here but everything about it was very underwhelming
Celebrated our anniversary at the Broad Chare. Perfectly cooked steak, loved the haggis on toast and the bar snacks were as great as always.
Fantastic wine list and amazing service meant a perfect night!
Had friend visiting from London - they were very impressed with restaurant, food and service
My son and I agree, best Sunday lunch for a long time
Have eaten at The Broad Chare before and as we were down in Newcastle with friends for the weekend decided to hook again. We arrived early for our booking on a Saturday night but after ordering drinks at the bar we were told that our table was ready. We all ordered the rib eye steak which was delicious and perfectly cooked for everyone. Good food, nice wine, great service, overall a lovely experience. Will definitely be back again.
Fish soup not very fishy. Skate wing dishes far too salty - almost inedible. Brill overcooked.
Service fine but food disappointing.
Great food, great beer, great price!! Highly recommended
Fabulous lobster & chips! Great service from very friendly waitress. Would highly recommend The Broad Chare.
Good food and great service although perhaps a little too quick. However the noise from other diners was deafening making it hard to speak to my wife which made for a less than relaxing evening
A relatively simple menu, in which everything we picked was very enjoyable. Traditional dishes and setting with a modern organisation, we really liked the result.
Only hiccups were an uncomfortably high temperature that the open windows could not overcome (but we were there in an exceptionally warm evening for Newcastle), and very high noise level. The latter is a more structural issue, related to density and fitout design/materials.
Overall, a nice experience.
As always, really enjoyed our food and everything else... except the too high noise levels! I've been there at the tables for two on occasions and even thence've both struggled to hear each other... much worse with four or more. Shame as everything else is so good. Decor looks great but does it really need to be so acoustically bad? All hard surfaces, no soft furnishings doesn't help. Sorry
we had a range of small plates to share, the mushrooms on toast, fishcake and the carnivore in our group had a steak.
fishcake and mushrooms were very tasty as were the cod cheeks and croquettes.
The steak was perfectly cooked rare as requested.
We all shared the chips that came with the steak as the portion was very generous.
Went on Friday with certainty to get fish and chips special. None left at 8.30 pm!!!? Surely that’s what you have loads of, the special? Waitresses reason, it was busy"..................
Very disappointed with Broad Chare for first time.
Lovely service and food. Building is beautiful.
Busy and noisy but a brilliant atmosphere to match the excellent food. The daily special ( I had the Tuesday oxtail) is great value at £12.50, alongside lots of other dishes on the short but temping menu. Oh, the staff were great, by the way.
Really nice food at a great price. Restaurant was quite noisy (we were upstairs) and it was difficult to hear sometimes.
Staff welcoming and friendly. Varied menu. Time between courses just right for us
Best quality and tasting sunday dinner ive had in a long time. Try the beef
Loved everything, can’t wait to go back
Great food great staffs don’t the wine wasn’t bad either
Attentive staff. Amazing food
Great place to eat. Very attentive staff and a wonderful menu/chef. One of our party proclaimed it was the best starter she had ever had (Sea Trout).
This time shared the rump steak with the hubby. Cooked as requested. Full of flavour and great sides.
No room for pud this time.
This place never disappoints.
The food was really good quality ingredients and cooked well. Also accommodated me when I asked for greens rather than mash potato.
Service was good but young lady that served her should be educated by chef about the food before servibg. She didn't know what a devilled sauce was when asked but did go and ask. She was also quite unsure about whether my colleague could have chips rather than potatoes.
I have no hesitation in recommending this place.
3 of the meals were nice, the liver and onions were far to seasoned the portion was small, not good value for money and not enjoyable, the other 3 meals were enjoyable.
Service was excellent, food for most of the party was great. I just made bad decisions when it came to my own but overall everyone enjoyed the occasion which was a birthday , would go back and try again
Excellent food, very tasty and well presented. Service was great
Brilliant food and great service. High quality restaurant food in a relaxed environment.
Service was slow and waitress didnt have a clue about anything.
There was ketchup on the burger which wasnt stated and my boyfriend hates ketchup with a passion, this may sound picky however another dish stated there was HP sauce on so we wouln’t assume a burger included ketchup if it didnt say so he had to scoop half the burger bun out and scrape the burger. There was more food left on the plate than was eaten. The woman didnt even offer to take it back. Over priced food and drinks, bang average food and bog standard service. A discreasionary 10% tip was added and no discount was offered for the burger dish. Cost £50 for 2 drinks, a burger and a rump steak (flat and fatty) with chips. Overall a disappointing first visit and there won’t be a second. Would not reccommend.
Food excellent and the staff were very helpful and attentive
Lovely food, well cooked and tasty from a menu that was varied but small enough to be easy to choose from. Fast, polite service, good ambience and reasonably priced.
