The Boarding House Ratings and Reviews
Good food expertly prepared. Fried green tomatoes were the best ever and the halibut was just the way I like it. Service was very friendly but a but overly eaher to remove dishes before we were finished - even though it was not a busy night.
Hostess stand personnel very unprofessional. Bar staff were satisfactory. Waitress, short thin blonde, early 20's, was an unmitigated disaster. Appetizers and main entree served simultaneously. $42 pork chop inedible.......tough as shoe leather. No accommodation, no apology..........just took it off the bill. Waitress obstructed access to table as we were trying to be seated. Continued to carry on conversation with adjacent table, oblivious to the fact we were standing with the hostess, waiting for her. She never did move. We had to scoot around the table like a fifties soda shop to take our seats. Very rude. Extremely poor service. Instead of addressing head on and apologizing........she opted to hide her head in the sand and say nothing. Fourth of July week, so assume they can get away with such poor service. We will never patronize this restaurant again. Managers of this restaurant don't need to be in the business given the poor lack of instruction to staff. This is a "high end" restaurant in Nantucket. We have dined elsewhere on the island with excellent service and food. Unfortunately The Boarding House does not measure up. Don't waste your time and money. Many other very fine restaurants on the island.
Unfortunately we were trying to celebrate our thirtieth anniversary.
First visit this season was not a disappointment. The Spanish grilled octopus as a starter was delicious, very filling. the Misto fritte of vegetables that was sent to our table was very tasty. My husband thought his chicken was outstanding, very flavorful and artfully serverd My entrée of lobster with homemade pasta was very good although I ate most of it the next day as I was filled from the apps. Cocktails are always well done. I noted the new reservations policies and think that there was a lot of thought put into them and should think it will enhance the dining room experience.
We ate at many Nantucket restaurants while we were there for a week. This was by far the best restaurant we dined at. We had a 5:30 reservation, so we were the first ones there. We were seated in the corner down below in the "grotto". My only complaint may be that they brought in other diners and seated them right next to us instead of the opposite end of the room. This may be convenient for the servers but not conducive to table talk. But the food! That's where this restaurant shines. We shared lobster spaghetti and Caesar salad. The salad was flavorful and tasty, and the lobster spaghetti was the best dish we'd had all week. There was plenty of it and the two of us couldn't even eat it all. Service was excellent, not scarce but not hovering. Dine here and you'll be making another reservation before you leave.
The Boarding House never disappoints. We went to dinner with friends and had a wonderful meal. I had the Lobster tail (along with 2 others in our group), and it was outstanding. The fish options on the menu are especially good. The service was great, the ambiance is warm and inviting. During the summer it is especially crowded, and the bar can get very noisy so wouldn't sit close by.
We were seated promptly at a very nice corner table. The drink menu and wine selections were fabulous. The restaurant is beautiful, I felt like I was in a wine cellar. Even though it is small it felt cozy and intimate. Food choices were creative and prepared beautifully. Servers were friendly and very professional. Would definitely recommend it and plan on going again.
Overrated spot. Sort of the sister restaurant to The Pearl (which still puts out good food but needs an overhaul. Decor is tired!) BH is trying too hard. Best dish is still the half chicken. Falafel was small and dry. The Pita bread was a total miss. Took far too long to order and receive a cocktail. WTH is everyone so worried about the water choice. Seriously!
A small group of friends joined for a reunion in Nantucket and chose the Boarding House for our only dinner night out. Menu was interesting but not too many options for the entrees. The appetizers and first plates looked inviting so we started with those and decided to share 2 entrees. The plates were all very good, but pretty pricey, which is expected in Nantucket. What was disappointing were the 2 drinks we ordered. Both a vodka tonic and a rum and tonic were very light on the liquor for a hefty fee. Considering how many drinks you can get out of a bottle, this was not the place to short change a customer.
Final decision was that food was good, but we probably could have found a better option for the price.
I didn't give the restaurant full marks because the fries with our steak frites were very soggy and the food in general is not better than home cooking. It's good but not extraordinary. They have good drinks and it's always buzzing and reliable but for full marks they would have to be extraordinary.
Early in the season so the Boarding House so a little too cool to dine outdoors which we have done many times. Main part of restaurant in downstairs which is much quieter than in bar area that can be quite noisy. Full bar and full menu. Food was excellent and presentation also excellent. Service was very attentive and customer oriented. Friendly staff. Definitely a place to go again.
We had an 8:00 reservation, but the table they reserved was not finished with their dinner. We were offered another table which faced the kitchen which we denied. We waited about 20 minutes for our table. The waitress was lovely, but barely audible. The food was good and my husband enjoyed the offered restaurant menu. My salad was delicious, but the melon was only fair.
Nice menu with local and speciality features. Plenty of variety for most. Waitress was very pleasant and attentive. Atmosphere was very nice -- a blend between traditional 'Nantucket' yet trendy enough (in a good way) to appeal to the foodie in all of us. We will definitely return on our second trip to the island.
My husband and I dined here with some old friends whom we rarely see. Our waiter was adorable, friendly and very knowledgable about the food and wine. We enjoyed our dinners very much, everything was delicious!
The servings were very small and consequently my husband and I were both hungry when we finished! It was a beautiful evening so we dined outside, which was lovely. By Nantucket standards, the prices here are very standard.
Our first time on Nantucket and we are three couples in our mid 50s. The atmosphere is so quaint, the service was impeccable and the food was wonderful - fresh and unique. The desserts were different than anything I have heard of and just fabulous. Made our visit truly memorable. We will be back.
We LOVED our brunch! The Fresh Farm to Table food was Wonderful. The menu offers so many Amazing dishes. You will want to keep going back to try all the chef's DELICIOUS plates. If you love a Bloody Mary, You must get one there. Truly a Fabulous experience. Food, location, servers are all Fantastic.
The Boarding House is a must when on Nantucket!
The location is fabulous, just steps from Main Street.
We had a table on the terrace, which is very charming, romantic, and great people watching.
The wait staff was friendly and helpful with suggestions and wine choices.
The food was delicious, as usual. Gourmet, with a Nantucket flair. A home run!
We will be back next summer!
I loved my meal, which was chicken accompanied by cheddar and chive waffles covered in Sriracha honey. The bourbon glazed bacon and sausage were excellent too. We make sure to come here every summer, but this time they did not offer the corn bread skillet for brunch. Bring back the corn bread!
We discovered the Boarding House last year after a bad experience at Ventuno across the street, and had a wonderful meal, so we were sure to reserve here again this year, and we were glad that we did. Everyone in the group was pleased. The menu has plenty of selection, the food was excellent, the service was professional and attentive, but the atmosphere is relaxed. We will definitely return. This is also a great place for drinks.
