About The Blue Pig Tavern
The Blue Pig Tavern serves American cuisine-nostalgic, simple and fresh. Executive Chef Jeremy Einhorn has implemented a delicious farm-to-table menu featuring fresh produce, herbs and eggs from our very own Beach Plum Farm, located less than 2 miles from the restaurant!
In the warmer months, dine on our wonderful, secluded patio. In the cooler months, cozy up to our magnificent dining room fireplace. The Blue Pig Tavern drives its name from a gambling parlor sited at Congress Hall in the mid 1800's. Earlier still, in the 1700s, Elias Hughes operated a tavern for whalers on this site. It was the first tavern in Cape May.

The Blue Pig Tavern Ratings and Reviews
I assume this place is living off of its reputation, because it was average at best and not worth the inflated price. Appetizers were not bad but entrees very disappointing. Steak ordered medium rare came out well done. Crab cakes bland and dry. Unimpressed.
It was hard to find, directions should state it is in Congress Hall. If you are dining outside you face a parking lot and the exhaust of cars starting. There is an indoor dining room, we were seated on a glass enclosed porch. It was extremely noisy with the clatter of dishes and large groups shouting. I could hardly hear our server. Food and drink were excellent. While our server was attentive , drinks were given to the wrong people and she asked who ordered what dish rather than referring to notes . It was inappropriate. Menu was varied and they had some vegetarian dishes too.
We've been to The Blue Pig Tavern a few times over the past few years, mostly because our kids like the restaurant. It is the restaurant for the renovated Congress Hall and the decor is very nice and historic. There is a generous outdoor seating area and the location is ideal, part of the hotel at the end of Washington Street mall. There is a bar downstairs.
The wine and beer list are average. There are a few good selections, but the choices are limited.
The food and service are unremarkable. It has the feel of a chain restaurant, even though it isn't part of a chain as far as I can tell. My kids love the bread and the chicken strips with fries and prefer them to many options in the area, which explains why we have eaten here more than once, considering all of the other great dining options in Cape May.
The food is average. I had the swordfish special served on polenta with some mixed vegetables. The cucumber was the most flavorful thing in my dish to give you an idea of how bland everything was. My wife had a bolognese pasta dish that was actually very good, and I would recommend that if you eat here. The pasta was fresh and the sauce was very good.
The Sangiovese wine option is a nice pick for the price. I wouldn't spend more than that for the options they offer.
We chose not to have dessert here because of the multiple option available across the street in the Washington St. Mall.
The service was ok. About average for a restaurant, nothing remarkable and nothing bad.
I would give this a "meh" recommendation if you were meeting someone at the mall or if you have kids. It's not the best restaurant in town but not the worst.
We will undoubtably be back for the reasons I mentioned above.
We celebrated our 20th anniversary here and it was a great experience. We had Hannah as a waitress and she was outstanding. She was pleasant, attentive, and knowledgeable. Plus, the food was amazing and the ambiance was romantic. My wife and I loved sitting out on the patio under the lights. Great job to all!
My parents have been to this restaurant before a couple of times. We decided to dine here as a party of 8 on Sun AUG. 2 for brunch at 10:30 am. We arrived at 10:15 and were seated promptly. Our waiter came to the table to get our drinks, he seemed less than enthusiastic to be there. Coffee was really good. There was a special tomato menu placed on the table so I decided I was going to get a Caprese sandwich with the local Jersey tomatoes. I was told I couldn't order it because it is listed under "lunch" although there were no hours applied to the lunch portion of this special menu like the sandwich section on the regular menu. Personally, if we are there for Sunday brunch, the literal meaning of brunch is breakfast and lunch, meaning both items should be available to order. Everyone else ordered and I asked to see the manager as I really wanted to try the sandwich. After a what seemed to be a while and really not convinced our waiter even went to "ask" the kitchen if they would do it, the manager appeared to tell me that is was a lunch menu. I insisted she ask the kitchen if they would make it since it was only 30 minutes from said "lunch" time at 11. Finally she returned and said they would make it. Now for the most disappointing part: WE WAITED AT LEAST 45 MINUTES for our breakfast to come out after several comments to the waiter and manager regarding the wait time. The waiter NEVER ONCE came to the table in the 45 min wait to see how we were doing an apologize for the delay. Finally, close to 50 minutes later after ordering, with no one else in the room we were dining, the food was delivered by a food runner who was very apologetic and we assured him it was not his fault. NO ATTEMPT was made to check on us or even bother to be aware we were VERY DISAPPOINTED! The only reason we did not get up and leave was because we had 3 very hungry teenagers with us and we new we would have to wait somewhere else if we left. WE WILL NOT BE DINING HER AGAIN!
We sat outside. The food was delicious! Both me and my boyfriend really enjoyed it. The staff is really cool because they are from all over the world! Our waitress was a little dry, but did the job, and I have nothing to complain about with her. The only thing I would say is either more shade somehow if you can, or fans or something! The tall brush is great around it for privacy, but there's no breeze that can come through. So it gets a little hot when the sun is on you. But I would go again in a heart beat!
Had the shrimp ceviche and a cocktail while waiting for the table. That was the highlight. At the table, ordered the fried calamari, which was very greasy. Had to pull off the batter just to eat it. Ordered the steak and cake for the main course. Definitely have had better steak. The service was good, although I won't be going back. For the money was not worth it..
Waited too long after having reservations. Finally seated and the food took a very long time to come out from the kitchen. The waitress was very good and apologetic.
The food was good when it arrived but the wait killed the moment. Also, it was very dark on the restaurant.
I wanted this to be a restaurant that I could go back to but probably not.
We have always enjoyed dining at the Blue Pig, especially when we have toddlers with us. The staff is very kid friendly. On Monday night when we were there it began to rain and the staff dragged over umbrellas to cover us. Enjoyable evening. I had the seafood sampler from the raw bar and it was excellent.
Fantastic food ,atmosphere and service - My wife and I loved this Tavern. Very friendly and attentive wait staff. The Dining atmosphere weather dining inside or on the outside patio is very relaxful ,clean and pleasant. The food was prepared perfectly - Fantastic meal. Looking forward to our next trip to Cape May so we can enjoy another fine meal at the BLUE PIG TAVERN
A couple of foodies, its maybe not mind-blowing on the food end, but its always good, and they have recently updated their menu to be a bit more locally minded.
But in terms of atmosphere, you can't get much better than The Blue Pig. Inside of the beautiful Congress Hall, the decor is spot on and while its a pretty large restaurant, inside and out, it still can feel intimate. The outside patio is beautiful with cafe lights and gas lanterns and good people watching. We also love this spot because after dinner on a Fri or Sat night, you can walk inside into the Brown Room for a drink an live jazz/guitar or downstairs to the Boiler Room for some more drinking/dancing/live music - either one is a great after dinner stay over
We usually love dining here & the food is always delicious. Our server was awful, not pleasant in anyway. It seemed as though we were a bother to him just being there. Unfortunately he dropped someone 's wine on our chair, that just topped off the bad service we received the entire evening. I did complain to the manager, I think that it may have been heard & passed over without a thought.
It was our first time in cape may. We started off really good because we had told them we were celebrating our one year anniversary and they offered us champagne- which was such a nice touch. They even congratulated us a few times. The service was a bit slow. I know they were busy and I totally get it. We ordered cocktails after we got our champagne and they came out late, almost with our main courses.
By the way, out of all the seats that were available inside, we got sat next to a group with KIDs!!! It's our anniversary!! No kids!!!
Our waiter was really nice though.
Overall the food was okay. But the place was cool.
Staff super friendly. This place is really busy. Reservations are a must. Food is fantastic. Porch seating is best. If request outside dinning which is not enclosed be prepared to sit there during sudden rain and electric storms. They overbook and have hard time moving you inside. Very disheartening.
Once again a delicious meal at the Blue Pig. However, this time we were seated in what we would call the family room, I stead of the main dining room. This room was filled with younger children and very noisy. We did have our teenage children with us and perhaps that's why we were seated there.. Next time I will request the main room to avoid the loudness.
We had lunch at the Tavern and I was a little disappointed. The clam chowder was bland and needed to be sent back to warm it up. The grilled Ruben was ok but my chicken BLT had no flavor. Our waitress was very nice but did not understand english very well so we had a hard time with communication. I have been here for breakfast in the past and that was very good, I was hoping the lunch was as good. We will give them another chance for lunch, it would be nice to get breakfast all day.
We have been coming to Cape May for years but had never eaten at this historic restaraunt. I would say we were missing out. The food was good, the outdoor seating was nice. We were right across the street from the mall, but the hedges keep you from feeling like you are in a crowded part of town.
My only complaint is the service didn't match the prices. It took a long time for a server to visit our table, it was clear that they had forgotten to assign if one. I how that this is a one time experience and that we don't get the same poor service when we visit again.
Decided to visit the Blue Pig Tavern after Trip Advisor recommended the place, like one of the places to dine in Cape May. Unfortunately, our experience was terrible. It was my birthday dinner but our waitress didn't pay attention to any detail. Our food took more than 40 minutes to arrive. The 2 table seating next to us received their meal in no time, but ours seems that it got lost in the kitchen. The waitress never refill my club soda, after asking in numerous occasions to do so. The tuna appetizer was without any taste. We ordered the steak and crab entree, the steak was chewy and the crab cake seems like it was fried with whatever other things they fried, since the taste was terrible. I had a salad and it seems that’s the only thing that turn out good from the whole meal. We were so frustrated with the whole experience and the long wait, that we decided to skip dessert (FYI My Birthday...hoping to at least blow a candle...) my husband just gave his credit card, to pay and leave since we anticipated there will be another 40 minutes for the check to arrive. What a disappointment!
We were seated in a corner to the left when you enter the dining area. It was very dark and we were unable to see the menu. We were using our cell phone light to be able to look at the menu when we were approached by another customer who claimed she could not see what she was eating with our light on. This kind of ruined the mood for our 28th wedding anniversary. The food was ok. We had difficulty hearing the waiter since the restaurant was so loud. Would have preferred an outdoor seat if it wasn't raining. Would try again but the outdoor venue next time. Really need to get better lighting to view their menus.
Julia our waitress couldn't do enough for us. First the front hostess accommodated our request to be seated on the beautiful porch. Once of our dining companions (we had 3 girls with my sister and I who were ages 7, 10, and 13) loves chicken soup and we asked Julia if she could sample it which she was happy to do and brought a condiment sized portion for testing which turned out great as our little diner liked it, but not enough to order a whole bowl. Kids menu for $10 couldn't be beat and all three girls ate their entire dinner and were actually raving. The drink and dessert which came with their meals (not just a scoop of ice cream) were a hit as well. My sister and I like to sample so we ordered 2 appetizers and 2 entrees to each have half of and they actually split them for us on separate plates which I LOVE and which most places won't do. We had the delightfully fresh salad with ingredients they were currently harvesting from their own farm as well as scrumptious steamed clams. Then it was the Mahi Mahi on a bed of turnip purree with excellent accompanyments and the scallops which were divine. Service was impeccable and we will definitely be back!
As guest at the hotel, this was a convenient dinner spot. The food was fresh and flavorful and the wines list was comprehensive.
We arrived a bit early for our reservation to check on our table, but ended up not being seated until approximately 15 minutes after our reservation time. We were lucky to be able to sit outside, but felt at times that added to the disconnect with the staff that we felt while waiting for our table.
A very nice restaurant in Congress Hall in Cape May. The ambiance is very low key and you don't have to worry about dress code. You can eat inside or outside. The servers were very friendly and efficient. They have some great juice drinks you should try. The best thing is the farm fresh egg dishes. Tried the Eggs Blackstone. Yum!
Very family/kid friendly. Will definitely return.
