The Blue Pig Tavern
In the warmer months, dine on our wonderful, secluded patio. In the cooler months, cozy up to our magnificent dining room fireplace. The Blue Pig Tavern drives its name from a gambling parlor sited at Congress Hall in the mid 1800's. Earlier still, in the 1700s, Elias Hughes operated a tavern for whalers on this site. It was the first tavern in Cape May.
Congress Hall never disappoints. Blue Pig tonight was wonderful. Seated directly at the fire place. Cocktails after at Brown Room. Food and staff are professional and courteous. As usual any food in Cape May is fresh Farm or sea to table
The Blue Pig is always great! We took advantage of the Blue Plate Special and the food was amazing! I would highly recommend the Blue Pig to anyone!
Had a wonderful dinner seated by the fireplace. Server Maria was wonderful. Just wish they would expand their menu a little bit and bring back the hummus as an appetizer!
Great lunch! Hummus plate appetizer was yummy but not enough to dip~ had leftover hummus
The food was okay but the service was extremely slow considering it wasn't that busy.
We had a reservation at 6:15 and didn’t sit to our table until 7:15. We had 3 kids and 4 adults. Half the party had to leave in advance to dinner. Dinner still took over 2 hours. The food when it came out was in very small portions and the kids food was covered with oil/butter. My son complained that his plain pasta was actually disgusting. I checked his food and it was covered in oil/butter. I really wanted this place to be great but it was a very bad experience and ruined our family’s night. Nice place but terrible planning and service. We wish it would be great because the building and atmosphere is awesome. Unfortunately the food and service doesn’t match the history.
Weekend away at the beach. We didn’t realize it was restaurant week but we were very happy with the menu and took advantage of the special. The drinks from the bar are always great, the pan a cotta for dessert was wonderful!
A good experience. Good & service were excellent. The staff made you feel welcome.
They couldn’t find the bottle of wine we ordered, so we waited a long time for our drinks. Then the brought our salads and entrees all at the same time... we sent the entrees back so they wouldn’t be cold. Good food, but odd service experience.
We were a party of 4 on Halloween night. It was also restaurant week in Cape May. I ordered the baked macaroni with crab. It was off the regular menu and I added the crab as an extra. It was absolutely delicious. The other 3 did the special menu fried oysters appetizers , scallop pot pie, and various desserts, for $35. Everyone had a fun time.
Charming. Even fire going in the fireplace- great on that blustery day. Lovely menu.
We went during a very quiet time...on a Tuesday evening during the off season. First we visited the Brown Room, which is really nice to have a drink and listen to some live music. Such a cool space and very enjoyable. Then we went to the Blue Pig (in the next room) for dinner. Was a really great evening for us.
Food was ok, menu selection limited. The chairs were so uncomfortable and wobbly . We were given a table that was literally in a walk way for servers. I was knocked into 3 times by a waitress who kept apologizing, it wasn’t her fault just poorly thought out place for a table. Wouldn’t return.
We have dined here before and had good experiences; this time our server seemed disinterested in taking good care of us. Food was ok, but our experience was not the best. Felt like our server was not giving us his best attention. We went to the Brown Room, the bar in Congress Hall, for drinks after dinner in the same building, and service there was much better.
We dine here frequently and always enjoy the ambience (especially in the cooler months when there is a fire in the big fireplace). Food was good but service was a bit slow, as is sometimes the case here. As long as you are not in a hurry it’s a great place to be :)
We loved this restaurant! The service was outstanding and the value was very good for the price! Looking forward to going back again on our next visit to Cape May!!
Good was good, only problem we had is we ordered soup and it was served cold, we sent it back to be warmed up and t was returned only warm.
Brunch was good. Eggs Benedict very good. But, home fries only average. Service good as well.
A Cape May must. Excellent food. Cinnamon buns....mighty good. Coffee was also excellent. Very nice dining experience. Recommended!!!
We had wonderful time. My only concern was the noise level. Historic room with lots of wood makes for challenging conversations.
Last summer I went and it was an excellent experience. However this time I was very disappointed. I ordered the French toast and it tasted like a dirty sponge. I sent it back to only get the same order and it smelled and tasted still like a wet dirty sponge even worse. On top of that I ordered bacon and never received it. My coffee was cold and I never was asked for a refill. Sadly, I won’t be going back. It’s a shame because it is such a cute place.
We got down this weekend to cape may Friday and decided to hit the Blue Pig tavern for lunch before checking in. We split a burger and the kale salad. The food was good, no question. The service was just somewhat slow. You had to ask for a water refill waiter didn’t come to check on the water...but this is something I noticed at some of these Cape May restaurants. Then getting the check was slow as well.
It was interesting to eat in the oldest tavern in Cape May. However, it is really hard to find in the hotel. I was actually worried about breaking the chair that I was sitting on. Room was overly warm on a cool October day. Staff was very average. Our waitress was much more interested in her friends that came in at another table than us. Food was uninspiring, but not terrible. Fish and chips were cooked, but very over-battered. Goat cheese and beet salad was fine. Tuna ceviche was poorly executed. Lobster linguini special had real lobster, all claw meat, but the cream sauce seemed off and was not helped by the tomatoes. Beer brought to table in cans. Staff seemed like all J1. Everything just tired and passionless, without care. Maybe we just caught them on an off-season night, but there must be better places to go than this. Try elsewhere if you are a foodie to any degree.
My wife and I went to the Blue Pig Tavern to celebrate her birthday. She chose the location. We had eaten there two times previously some years ago. The room is nicely dark and our waiter Eugene was attentive. We started with the New England chowder. She had the meat loaf and I had the crab cake. The food was just okay. Nothing special. Certainly nothing worth the $24 for the meat loaf and $34 for the crab cake. The chowder was tasty but thin. The meat loaf came with only mashed potatoes and a garnish. The crab cake was all lump crab, which is good, but it came with barely warm French fries and a very routine cole slaw. I would not rule out returning, but there are much better options in Cape May for a special dinner for two.
Nice atmosphere. Delicious food.
We love the Blue Pig and return there regularly. This past weekend there were major issues with a long line to check in with the hostess both days and there is no good place to even stand near the hostess area. Some of the slow down was people trying to make reservations with the hostess. This process needs to be streamlined so that the majority of patrons who have reservations are not left standing on line for 15 minutes just to arrive! Perhaps a different line for walk ins vs. reservations?
Food as always was excellent. Love the eggs! However our server may have forgotten to enter our order as took > 30 minutes to receive breakfast and others seated much later were served before us.
Incredible food at a fair price. Parking is tough to find on busy days.
We went for brunch and were not disappointed. The food was delicious! I highly recommend making reservations ahead of time. We were seated right away, but those that didn’t have reservations had to wait.
We showed up for our reservation on time and they didn't seat is for 15 minutes, which cut into the time we budgeted to be there before going to a scheduled event and then the service was slow. We only saw our actual server twice and it took her twenty minutes to all if we needed anything after the food was severed (we didn't even see her to flag her down) so we had to forgo ketchup for the sake of time and rush her for the bill at the end. The space is gorgeous and the food was delicious though.
Seated in the main dining area surrounded by loud children and guests. Server was mostly absent. Food meh. Order incorrect (just a cheeseburger w bacon???)
The noise level is horrible!
So cute quaint atmosphere. Perfect for a quick bite.
The wait staff all seemed inexperienced. I was served the wrong entree. It was corrected. Water glasses were not refilled. The waiter did not ask if we wanted dessert. The reservation was made through open table but No One could honor the use of my bonus points. They claimed the computers weren’t working. Eventually a manager straightened it out.
The good was average
For the first time ever, I was disappointed in my meal at the Blue Pig. The Roasted Beet salad had two tiny cubes of beet (usually there is lots), the Fish & Chips was appalling (batter was thick, pale mushy and tasteless). Since the fish was cod, after removing the batter, it was still tasteless. I have been to this restaurant a lot of times and always enjoyed it. Now, I would not recommend it.
Arrived on a Sunday in October for a late lunch, 1:30. We had a reservation. Restaurant was not too busy however Hostess was nice but tried to seat us at a tiny table for 2 when there were plenty of larger tables available. When asked to be seated at a larger table she obliged.
Server came over after 5 minutes. He took our beverage order and returned. Spicy bloody maria was fine, not great but fine. Tomato juice was very thin, no body and garnish was less then appealing. We ordered 2 chopped salads, that is it - took 35 minutes to be served. A bit ridiculous for 2 cold salads. Server did check to see if everything was fine after a few minutes but never returned again to see if we wanted another drink, more water, etc.. Finally found him and asked for the check.
I would recommend to a friend because I think we need to try one more time.
The food was ok but not to my expectations. After hearing so many rave reviews, I expected a lot more. It was good, not great.
Overall nice place to eat for a hotel restaurant. Good food. Everyone loved the Deviled Eggs. Fish and Chips were especially good as was the Bacon Wrapped Meatloaf. Cool historic atmosphere but the Ice cream parlor chairs were a bit uncomfortable.
So sad. We have been here multiple times and both the food and service are typically fabulous. I’m devastated to say that both were so terrible this evening. I tried to very quietly tell our server about our experience and it very clearly fell on deaf ears. She handed us our check and it was off to the next person. Incredibly disappointing.
Seated upon arrival. Service was nicely paced. Server was friendly. Food was delicious as always.
In Congress Hall. Good place to go for the scenery and experience - once.
