The Blue Ox Ratings and Reviews
The food was fantasic. Very interesting combinations and preparations without doubt. BUT the manager and assistant managers are TERRIFIC as well. Really made us feel welcome and everything was outstanding. Wish it were more convenient to home BUT we will go back for sure. Don't miss it.
Once again, a great dining experience. This occasion has become annual, and staff was very accommodating in revising our original reservation when additional guests were expected to join our party. Everything was excellent. A busy night didn't impact the level of service. Thank you to our charming, professional, and competent tableperson, Ryan, who helped make our evening perfect.
Food was awesome. We got the B &E chicken and the other couple got the maple glazed tenderloin. The only thing that went wrong was the music was very loud and you could not talk to other people in your party. We requested three times to lower the music and gave up when they didn't do it.
This was hands down one of the best meals we've had since moving to Boston. We'd been hearing about how good this place was and finally had the opportunity to go. To be honest, I was concerned that all the hype would make me disappointed. To the contrary, our experience was better than expected. The filet special was amazing, with a great smoky flavor. The hangar steak, cod and salmon dishes were all also outstanding. Sticky toffee dessert was out of this world. The chicken wings are awesome (incredible sauce) The most pleasant surprise was how outstanding the staff were. Every server, bus person, etc were personable and outstanding. Our server, Ryan, was top notch. Looking forward to returning.
There were four of us for a 5pm reservation which is when they open so place was not full. We all shared the baked brie and it was phenomenal. Two of us had the shrimp with linguine which had a pesto sauce and cherry tomatoes. We both finished our meals and thought the food was fantastic. The third person had the 8oz filet mignon special and requested that she get a cut that hadn't been cold smoked and also requested mashed sweet potatoes instead of the mashed potatoes. Both requests were easily granted by our waiter. The filet was cooked perfectly and the person loved her meal. Two others tried it and also thought it was delicious. The fourth person had the pork tenderloin and liked it. We all had a cocktail and they were brought out in a timely manner; we all enjoyed what we ordered.
The place tends to be on the loud side. We sat in the back room, but our table was near the front room where the bar is located and it was louder than we thought it would be.
I've been to Blue Ox before and have never had a bad meal. Food and service have always been very good. Very happy they are on Open Table now.
Mid-summer Saturday evening reservation at the Blue Ox for four, and it was hopping when we got there for our 7:30 reservation about 30 minutes early. They had a table ready for us in the noisier part (front room where bar is located), but we knew conversation would be difficult, asked for a table in the back room where it was quieter, and voila when 7:30 came around and our friends showed up, they had moved us. As usual, service was prompt, attentive, and everything was timed perfectly. Food was also spot-on, with fresh , very well shucked and well presented oysters (you know how some places shuck and chuck without paying attention to keeping the product free from shell bits and such), perfect tuna tartare, etc etc. Try the barrel aged Manhattan for a sublime cocktail experience, fyi. A reliable spot in an unlikely place...
My wife and I came here for our 5-year anniversary. The restaurant management team impressed me with the delivery of complimentary champagne in order to make the occasion special. I appreciate the gesture and would certainly recommend this restaurant to others. Thank you!
Delicious selection of entrees for a picky vegetarian who was eating out with carnivores. The carnivores were delighted and the vegetarian was as well. Perfectly cooked gnocchi, just the right amount and beautifully presented. The marscapone cheese cake was superb.
Everything (except the noise level) was excellent, but per the request we were seated in the alcove by the window in the bar... kept the noise to a manageable level.
Dawn, our server, was attentive, without being intrusive, and very helpful with meal and wine choices.
Have always consider this place an excellent evening out, and it didn't disappoint.
Brought my Dad for his birthday, since we were seeing a show at Lynn Memorial Auditorium. My 2nd time at Blue Ox, his 1st. We both had the Sin Burger and the Bacon n Legs bourbon drink. We both left saying that may have been the best burger and best bourbon drink I've ever had. No need for appetizer, as the meal is plenty filling for two hungry guys. Waiter was very busy, may have been only person working the floor at the time, but still did great job. I don't often find myself in Lynn, but when I do, I wouldn't eat anywhere else.
The food was fantastic and the service was outstanding. Our waiter was so pleasant and solicitous without being intrusive. We shared the clam chowder which is now in our top 5/phenomenal, as well a salad which included lettuce, walnuts, cranberries and goat cheese . The salad and soup were split up for us. My companion had the shrimp over linguini in a scampi sauce and I had a burger. If you don't know it yet, this restaurant cannot compete in the best burger competition any longer because it always comes out first! I'm going to end this review by rating the bread, which I rarely eat in restaurants. It is well worth a visit to just sample that bread. I can't even begin to guess how they make it taste like manna from heaven. Yes, we will definitely be returning to this dining gem.
He have been so happy to have a quality restaurant nearby which has been so successful year on year. The chef/owner and family are key, and we welcome the familiarity of the menu over time, with all choices excellent. Island Creek family oysters are great, early there are bar specials on them summers, although I missed them and couldn't find out t e hours in making my reservation. Steak options are often presented as specials; I prefer the rib-eye with demiglace and only after the fact discovered the sauce could be ordered as a side. All told, this restaurant is a gem, management and quality stable, with comfort for all.
Heard a lot about the Blue Ox from friends who frequent the place and I am glad that we made the decision to drive out of Boston for a bite here. First off, our server, Effie, was excellent...very friendly, accommodating, and made great menu recommendations. Food was excellent (sin burger is a must for first timers), and parking in the area is a breeze. Will return to explore more of the menu!
We were there on a week night; the restaurant was not crowded, but service was slow. Although this restaurant is labeled on Open Table with two dollar signs ("$$"), it should really be three. Prices were high. All the dinner specials were in the $30 to $35 range. I love caesar salads and generally always get one wherever I go. It's a simple dish that can demonstrate how much care and attention is being taken in the kitchen. Unfortunately, here the caesar salad was a big disappointment: soggy, wilted and brown. Generally, the food was good, but given the overall price of the meal and the inattentive service, we felt we didn't get our money's worth.
