the food was fantastic! I had the lobster tacos, clam chowder and calimari. Everything was amazing! Probably one of the best meals I've had in a long time. Worth the 30 mile drive. Service was excellent. Bar area was noisy but the dining room was quieter. Reservations highly recommended.
I just love the Blue Ox! My friend had told me the food was great so I finally checked it out. Our waitress was so friendly and nice! She checked on us to make sure we were happy and taken care of. The food sounded good on the menu and it was even better in person. I can’t give this place enough props. Love it!
First time @ this restaurant as we don't live in the area but we were going to a concert in Lynn. Food was very good, we both had a burger which was delicious. I don't know where they get the pickles from but they were so good. Fries were a little salty but had a good flavor. Only down side was the service. It was a busy Fri night and we waited over 10 minutes for our 1st drink and when we asked the waiter he said they probably lost our drink order and did get them to us shortly after that. Waited a while for the food too. Over all was a good experience, just a little slow on the service.
I had been looking forward to going to Blue Ox. My friend and I made a reservation (strongly suggested) before a show at the nearby Lynn Auditorium. The decor was very pleasant, very clean with a lively atmosphere. The staff was excellent! Very friendly and welcoming. I am a "foodie" and don't mind paying for great food and a nice experience. However, I thought the food was just "average". I ordered one of the specials that night (linguine with mussels and kale) and my friend had the Cod entree'. I didn't think that either dish was worth the price we paid ($30 and $28). I am not cheap but I really didn't think the cost matched the quality.
Love the Blue Ox. Always a great dining experience from super service and fabulous food. The hanger steak is a favorite. You can't go wrong with any selections, but some of my favorite appetizers are: the baked brie--great for sharing, the tuna tartare with homemade potato chips, lobster tacos.
There are several reasons it is always a hopping spot!
Handcrafted cocktail at the bar started things off nicely, but I found the hostesses to be non-responsive: your job as a hostess is to greet people and make them feel welcome. These young ladies did neither. Starters were lobster tacos - didn’t knock my socks off. But it was served with a nice salad with a very tasty dressing (not drenched!) - I’d heard the bartender recommend the chowder; I wouldn’t. I was expecting a creamy comfort food and what I got, although flavorful, was too spicy.
The filet mignon: perfection.
PEI Mussels were Just ok, Broth was a little weak on flavor. Desserts were terrific. Vanilla ice cream was creamy perfection, sticky toffee pudding was spot on and the creme brûlée was tasty and nicely garnished with fresh berries. Would I go back, absolutely. I’ll just ask more specific questions about the menu options.
Parking was easy, we found a space right outside the door. Unfortunately, there was no handicap automatic door. That made getting in and out of the restaurant somewhat challenging. We waited about ten minutes before we were seated, but to be fair we arrived early for our reservation.
I ordered the Sin City burger and it was fantastic. He should have beat Bobby Flay! My guest ordered the tuna tartare. She discribed it as fine, but not having a lot of taste.
We sat on the bar side which was fairly loud. But the area we were in was pleasant enough and allowed us to have a conversation.
The server was knowledgeable about the menu; however, once our food was received, we next saw her when we were finished. If there was a problem, I am not sure we would have been able to have it addressed.
Overall, it was an enjoyable evening and I will likely return.
We come back often, a local favorite, this time bringing friends. Each diner was very happy with their choices. My husband and I had a mussel special, my friend got the Salmon, which is one of my favorites. Our other friend got the pumpkin raviolis!!! Amazing as always. We sat in the back dining room which is a good place to have nice conversation and not as lively as the bar area. Always happy, always looking forward to our next trip back!!
A bustling Saturday night at the Ox never disappoints. Chef Matt takes incredible care to ensure each meal arrives as if it was the only dinner he was plating that evening. Consistency of product and excellent service complimented by outstanding drinks. The Oxperience gets better every time
This is our "go to" restaurant. Every single bite is a amazing. If you eat with your eyes, you won't be disappointed ... the food looks as good as it tastes. You are greeted with crusty bread and homemade maple butter - need I say more? My favorites are the Baked Brie appetizer and the Sin Burger (Pasta Bolognese is a close second). Save room for the Sticky Pudding - a MUST with cinnamon ice cream (share if you have to, but don't leave without trying this)! What are you waiting for? GO NOW!!!
have been to the Blue Ox in the past, and it was very good. Last Saturday, we had 8 pm reservations, and they were out of hamburgers which was the only thing my husband eats on the menu. He ordered the crabcake which was too spicy for him and was not happy.
The service was also slow and took almost an hour to get our food. Two of us had the cod which was very good, and one had the pork chop. It was also extremely noisy.
I doubt we will ever go back.
We ventured a little farther afield from our usual Cambridge and Somerville haunts to go to Lynn for Blue Ox. We were so nicely surprised with a wonderful waiter and great food. I was disappointed with our seats since they sat us at the front portion of the restaurant, near a very boisterous bar scene. The food was great and I recommend the drive.
Sometimes good food doesn’t make up for horrible service.
Lately, it seems to be that it just not worth coming when the service is just so awful.
Our table wasn’t ready and when it was we were seated in front of the exit door, which I can’t imagine is safe in case of an emergency. Our waitress was lackluster and by 8p they were already out of pear salad and burgers. The food (lobster tacos and tuna tartare, spicy calamari) were good, the rib-eye (a special) was only fair.
A meal that should have been pretty straightforward was just painful, it took so long. We waited for her to come back after finishing our meals and order dessert. When she did stop by it was to place menus saying “if you want something” and left before we could say anything else. We were still sitting there by 920p waiting to order when we just got annoyed and left. We managed to get a different waiter to help get the check for us.
For as much as I love the tacos and tuna tartare, it might not be worth putting up with the terrible service we’ve encountered the last couple of times we’ve been here.
