The Blue Fish - Bayou is a great place to go before a ballet, opera, symphony or Alley Theatre show. The service is excellent and the fish always fresh.
Wait staff 'phoned it in'. Took our order and then never returned until bringing the check.
We had dinner before our show at the Wortham for the second Saturday in a row. Ronnie was our server both visits and she was fantastic! She even remembered our drink and dessert orders from the week before. We will definitely request her next time.
It took 20+ minutes to get our drinks. Waiter admitted bartender did not know how to make an old fashioned. Food came before the drinks. Waiter never came back to check on us. We had to ask for more drinks.
Great pre-concert meal. It's not inexpensive but the food was good and the service was great. It's become my pre-concert go to...
Met Cildhood Friend while he was in town. Love the food and drinks. Recommend the crab egg rolls and lobster pops. DELICIOUS!!!!
Overall, Blue Fish was a decent place. We were celebrating my friend's birthday with a group of people (total of 7) and they handled the split checks really well and the waiter asked ahead of time how we wanted to portion out the checks so when it came time to paying, it went super smoothly! The food was fresh and delicious, and the menu sports options other than sushi for those who weren't a fan. However, I didn't find any of their rolls mind blowing (although the waiter's suggestion for the Rainforest roll definitely panned out & it was the best out of the bunch!). Service was a little less attentive then I've experienced and food came out intermittently, with a few people having to remind our waiter about missing rolls. And one of the appetizers came out at the very end of our meal which should have been disclosed if it was going to take that long! Food was fast which would be a plus for attending the theater, but it was a slightly weird to be almost the only guests in the restaurant after 7:45. However, it meant we weren't disturbing any couples at nearby tables.
Also, the AC was blasting directly on our table and the restaurant was kept at a very chilly 65, so most of our party was wishing we had brought jackets!
Great sushi! Sat out on the patio and had a delicious meal.
The Blue Fish is our go to place pre-theater. We spend a lot of time in Houston and never tire of visiting The Blue Fish before or after our shows. Staff is always friendly and accommodating, takes our show time into consideration and even let us know the optimal time to leave so we can make our show in time.
Selected because it was close to Jones Hall. Excellent choice if you are going to the Symphony
Convenient location. Food were good but pricy.
My (adult) daughter and I met for dinner on a Friday afternoon before the Houston Symphony concert we were going to. It was VERY crowded, and I was VERY glad I made a reservation. We were seated at the windows near the bar. Although I was given the choice of in or outside, inside was the right choice on a humid Houston afternoon. Food was very good (Mollie's Lollipops especially), albeit somewhat slow as it was very crowded. We had a couple of appetizers, a couple of sushi rolls and a cocktail each, and would up with a $100 tab (including tip). I'd go again, just not if I was in a hurry!
We always enjoyed the dinner at the Blue Fish before going to the opera
The waiter knows exactly what to do to let us arrive at the opera on time.
The food is excellent and always very fresh
Nice innovative menu for sushi. Good beer selection too.
Overall experience was good. We order the same drink everytime we come, but we always have to tell the waiter how it is made (vodka and sake). We specifically said it should have nothing sweet added to it. When the drinks came they were sweet and had to be sent back. The second time they were made right.
I love the location of the restaurant. It's steps away from the Houston Symphony. Great environment to eat outside, with a nice view of wortham and downtown. Food was great and cheap. It's great to go with friends and choose a variety of sushi. I strongly recommend this place.
This time out we discovered that two drinks on the menu were unavailable. Service was not as good as we have had there before, but the food was still great. We will be going back.
Food was whatever. For the price it's not worth it at all. You get portions to fill up a young child. The only good thing was that the food came fairly fast.
We ate at the Blue Fish because it was across from the Alley Theater where we had tickets to see a show that night. We were concerned that we wouldn't be able to order, get our food, eat and pay our bill in time but that was not a problem. They are pros at this when it comes to getting the food out quickly for theater-goers. I had the salmon nigiri which was good, a California roll which was okay and kind of messy as it fell apart, and miso soup which was good. The sushi is not outstanding but it is definitely good and quick. Our waitress was fantastic. The atmosphere is noisy and very crowded before a show.
The location is very convenient, but the service is slow. Food is brought out when every a plate is ready. This is not good with a group. The servers are overwhelmed and do not follow up much with their tables. The quality of the fish was average. The presentation of the food was below average
Dominique was a great waitress😀
Rhoda & Allen Clamen
Great for lunch downtown. The tuna tower is a must and all sushi/sashimi I've order has been user delicious. Take out option makes for an easy classier lunch if you're quick on the go.
Good service, above average sushi, nice outdoor patio.
As always, Blue Fish provides the very best sushi experiences, with service and personality to match. Have never had less than an all-around wonderful dining experience.
We told the server that we had tickets to the symphony. She was very attentive but the bar was veeery slooow with our drinks!
Excellent place for before show meals. Food was Great and downtown setting was very special.
Great sushi restaurant. We frequent it whenever we are in the area. Some of the best service and polite hosts and hostesses.
Good food, good service. Lousy initial table placement. Had reservations for 8. Seated at a 6 person table right outside the kitchen. Not sure why restaurants think patrons won't mind this
Switched to bigger outside table which was fine.
This was a great dinner place before going across the street to the Wortham Theatre! The food was (as always) delicious, the service was great, & we easily had dinner before our show.
This is the second time we dined at Blue Fish prior to attending a play at the Hobby. The first time was flawless, the food was good and the service was exceptional. This time the restaurant was extremely understaffed! We told our server we had to complete our meal and have our bill paid by 7:00 to make our show. We barely saw him after he took our order because they had him spread out all over the restaurant with way to many tables. The bar was ridiculously slow, it would take more than 20 minutes to get a drink. We finally had to cancel drink orders that had been in for more than 30 minutes because we had to leave. We also were never served food items we ordered. The first time we were there a server stormed out screaming profanities and throwing chairs over the railing because he had been treated unfairly. I hope they can get there staff issues worked out.
Great sushi! Lots of variety! Something for everyone even if you don't eat sushi!
The service was great! My family enjoys sushi, but I do not. I was very pleased that the menu included entrees besides sushi that I could enjoy as well. Everyone enjoyed their menu choices. I had the teriyaki chicken which was delicious!
Great place to eat. I recommend the Rainforest and the Shark Bait.
Excellent sushi and tempura at a moderate price. Convenient to the Theatre District.
Excellent service. We were eating prior to a Sunday matinee performance, and the waiter asked us whether we were attending an event and what time it would start. He wanted to be sure we were finished with lunch in time to get to our event. And - the food was excellent. We both ordered the Tropical Salmon Dinner. We had a lovely, leisurely lunch and made our matinee in plenty of time.
I like this restaurant and I go there just about every time I am scheduled for the theatre. My only complaint is that it's so noisy! Hard to talk to your companion. Also, I would have liked to have had one or two of the options listed in the lunch menu for my dinner. Too bad I couldn't get the Bento box. Both my date and I would have liked that. Instead we ordered some appetizers.
Wonderful Place for a Afternoon Business Meet. Really Enjoyed the Food and settings
always a great pre show meal, especially the sushi and rolls. Always prompt service even when crowded. Always high quality and great presentation.
I would have expected a location in the restaurant that is not right at the door given that I made a reservation more than 2 days in advance. I am also a regular customer, so would appreciate the attention when returning for special occasions. I suggest your reception staff asking for such details to ensure quality service.
Overall a great experience. The quality of the food was outstanding, with one exception. The mixture of imitation crab and mayo in dishes like the ahi tower and California roll for my date and myself, caused a decline in taste. The taste was equivalent to mayonnaise and canned tuna added to a decadent delight. Therefore, the next time I dine at Blue Fish, I will avoid any items on the menu which contain imitation crab stick and mayo.
