The Black Sheep
Overall great experience! Food was exquisite, great wine and great service. Truly great!
Great food, innovative seasonal specials, always healthy, but always great service aligned from staff to owner, clean, hip, youthful vibe.
Wonderful service, delicious food. Our group shared a bunch of plates, and each was fantastic. The service was outstanding and dog friendly (my friend brought her service dog). Love this restaurant!
Our dinner was exceptional! We had 5 different tapas, each of which were delicious. A great dinner.
Did not make our anniversary feel special.
Really good time; warm ambiance; very attentive staff
Food was adventuresome and tasty.
Staff did a great job accommodating my dietary restrictions.
We love the Black Sheep. It’s our favorite go to restaurant. All aspects are always consistent and it’s always a great dining experience.
Interesting fare. Ramen noodle soup was salty n poor value at $18. Phyllo thing was tasty. Food didn't agree with me and was sick next morning. $40 meal of 2 items, including split charge, no beverages, made for overall poor value. Service decent. This was our second try. Won't be back.
We loved the whole experience. I requested a window seating and got it. The service was fantastic, thanks Sam. The food was just fabulous. The courses was served in perfect timing. I had two friends with us that was there for the first time and they just loved it. Happy customers ♥️
I need to be more selective about giving five stars, so that restaurants like this will truly stand out. We had the tasting menu with a couple glasses of wine each. Every dish was delicious and exquisitely presented, beginning with the boquerones (one perfect anchovy on each bruschetta), through the chocolate mousse. Mostly local farmers’ market ingredients, which meant it felt very spring-like. The wine list was well priced with great, if a bit obscure, choices. Our server, Sam, was helpful and quite delightful, but stayed back when we did not need her. Even the decor, a bit edgy, was great. We were on a theater schedule, and everyone ensured that we kept to it, but I recommend at least two full hours, and more leisurely, two-and-a-half. We’ll be back to the Black Sheep, and be sure we’re very hungry when we do!
We were celebrating our anniversary and it was Cinco de Mayo. We were greeted with glasses of champagne and they served a special menu. All of the dishes were creative and wonderfully seasoned and prepared. We will definitely be back upon returning to Santa Barbara.
The tasting menu was fabulous! There were 5 people in our party and we were delighted to be able to try so many of the delicious menu items. Served family style, there was more than enough (almost too much) food to satisfy everyone. Chef Perez never disappoints, and Ruben has a passion for the guests and employees that shows in all aspects of the restaurant. Great food, great service and highly recommended!
Fantastic meal! We LOVE this place and were so excited that they decided to participate in the Vegan Challenge! The food was delicious, creative, beautiful, reasonably priced, and nutritious. What more could you ask?
I was provided a given a gift certificate to Black Sheep as a recommendation for a meal during our Santa Barbara vacation. Order basically every special and the food was mediocre. I must have a different palate then the reviews they had on yelp. Thoughts on our dishes: 1) Lamb was the most gamy tasting lamb I’ve hand in awhile 2) prawns tasted like frozen 3) risotto tasted like a bacon Mac and cheese ) scallops didn’t taste fresh.
Might have been a 1 off for the restaurant but the food did not live up to the reviews. Server was great but couldn’t really defend our tables observation on food. Even when we said lamb was gamy server said it was his fault for not informing us and they didn’t event take it off bill.
Most likely would not recommend this restaurant based on food but maybe ambiance.
We had a delicious dining experience at The Black Sheep. Staff were enthusiastic about the food and drinks, but in a low pressure way. The pork tacos on blue corn tortillas were a real treat.
My boyfriend and I walked in on Saturday for what I was expecting to be a special and expensive date night. But the happy hour was so affordable and SO delicious (!!!!) that we came back again the very next day. Casual, nice, and happy staff/ambiance, definitely a new favorite place in SB :)
Had a great time here! Dining room/bar is small with a couple private rooms for larger parties. They have a wine bar adjacent to the restaurant that is just fabulous - we sat here while waiting for our table to be ready. Our server came over to the wine bar to ask us which table option we would prefer and came back to fetch us when it was ready. The food was very flavorful and everything was cooked perfectly. They had some awesome vegan options as well! Wine was good, service was incredibly friendly, and food was delicious! Highly recommend.
Everyone was very accommodating and the food was spectacular! We did the feast tasting it was worth it to me! 9 course meal for $65 for delicious food!
This place is just lovely in every way. It's got a quirky feel that is reflected in the extra-sociable staff (and owners); the creative cuisine and drinks; and the casual yet attractive decor. As a vegan, I'm somewhat limited in what I can eat at Black Sheep, but they will make something on request, and they participated enthusiastically in Santa Barbara's Vegan Chef Challenge with a delicious three course prix fixe plant-based menu. It's a great place to hang out, eat and drink well, and feel welcome.
We went to the Black Sheep for happy hour which made the value of the food, drinks and bill work. The food was delicious. Love the Bone Marrow on the crostini dish and the tacos were delicious. Drinks were pretty good and the service was EXCELLENT! My friend even got a free birthday "mousse" dessert!
Great vibe. The service was spot on. The food was fantastic, with the rabbit dish being notable.
Great risotto, friendly servers, nice vibe.
We had the fixed 7 course "sampler" meal with wine pairing. It was one of the best meals we have ever had. (Perhaps 2nd only to La Colombina, a Michelin 1 star in Venice Italy)
Some of our favorites
The 3rd course Scallops Crudo with peruvian quinoa and more AND Salmon ceviche with avocado puree on a blue corn tortilla.
5th course Bone marrow bruschetta with an orange port sauce, Oxtail ragout It did not sound that good but it was fantastic
6th course was Rabbit a la flammade in a cognac /beer sauce. absolutely rich and phenomenal
7th course my favourite was the profiterole with chantilly cream
The wines were well paired and the service excellent. There were 4 of us for this meal it would have been better on a bigger table
Overall the meal was a real "tour de force"
To the restaurant ... Thank you for this meal
Excellent food in a laid back environment. As good as any food you will find in Santa Barbara. This family operation creates the best high end prepared food but the atmosphere is low key and pleasant. No pretense here, just good food and wine. The tasing menu is fun and diverse.
Food was underwhelming. Very small portions. Multiple dishes came out incorrectly ordered or under/overcooked. Puzzled by yelp reviews.
All seven of us LOVED it and the food !! Great restaurant, service fantastic and so nice !! We are spreading the word !
My new favorite restaurant in SB! The tasting menu was unbelievable and covered a wide range of tastes and flavors. The service was also very personable and involved the whole staff, including the chef greeting us table side. Their craft cocktails are also worth a visit. I highly recommend this place to any foodie wanting great food just off the main drag in an intimate, weird-fun setting.
We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. The staff couldn’t have been more accommodating. They personalized the tasting menu to our likes and made sure that we enjoyed each dish. They really seemed to care that we had a great meal, and we did!
Interesting menu. Reading the menu it was a bit hard to mentally assemble what the dish would taste like. However, all four dishes we ordered were really good! We ordered the Ramen, the brussel sprouts, the bruchetta, and one other dish that I cannot recall. Then, we ordered a almond cake type of dessert and it was great.
Arrived to a bustling crowd on a Tuesday. We ordered two courses - the brussel sprouts and cauliflower then mains. Three of us ordered Ramon bowls and our daughter ordered sliders. Oddly our mains arrived with no mention of our appetizers. But thankfully our waitress got it quickly straightened out, took the mains away and quickly served us the appetizers. The brussel sprouts and Ramon would bring us back again.
Best in downtown Santa Barbara. Hands down
The food was delicious and service was great. The overall space felt very open and uncomfortable and the random artwork everywhere was not pleasant to look at.
sat next to a couple with an intoxicated abusive man... should have been asked to leave...
one of our entree orders was not taken therefore we waited for them to make it... asked if we wanted our entire dinner remade / served at once...
manager provided a round of drinks to make up for the issues...
$45 - 6 oz. new york striploin
service was nothing special...
Not the best night due to a private party for 50 that needed more attention than our party of 4. Too bad.
Great meal. The Asian fusion choices were interesting without being bizarre, which is a fear of mine at fusion places. Enjoyed the pork belly ramen, brussel sprouts, and their tartufo - chocolate bombe dessert. Attentive service by all the staff. Would definitely go back.
We sampled many menu items and nearly every cocktail on the list. Everything was inventive, with influences from Asia, Italy, France, and Hawaii.
The food was great, but let me tell you about the cocktails. The cocktails are made with shochu/soju and universally delighted by our four cocktail snobs. The first to arrive was the Margarita. It was "the best Margarita I've ever had" so it made its way around the table and was well received by all. The Manhattan was bright, fully aromatic, and did have the essential alcohol bite required for a good Manhattan - I ordered two. The cocktails were so good that we think we enjoyed three rounds.
This was our fourth evening at Black Sheep in our annual travels to Santa Barbara. It has become one of the required stops for us.
Love this place - a staple of mine. Ruben, the owner, is always do enthusiastic and passionate in his presentation of the specials. Always so good!!
