The Black Horse
Food is our passion and we will never compromise on quality. We are proud of our seasonally changing menus, simple, yet exciting using the finest ingredients and locally sourced produce. Certain dishes have become specialities such as our sticky ribs and homemade 8oz burgers. Our beef has been aged for a minimum of 35 days and the roast beef served on Sundays is unrivalled. Crispy beer battered fish and specials such as sea bass, turbot and whole lobster, is caught in the morning and delivered fresh to us on the same day.
Breaded Wholetail Scampi
Baby Gem, Crispy Bacon, Marie Rose Sauce
I have been here so many times and loved it but today1) services was slow 2) had to send my drinks back 3 times, 3) had to chase up parts of the main order 4) food which is not cheap is usual worth the price but not today
Very average pub food and service all over the place.
Enjoyed another evening at the Black Horse.
Everyone lovely … I would say that service was a little sporadic given that it was quite quiet. Definitely would have consumed more drinks had waiters been more attentive but all in all it was an enjoyable evening and I do love the Black Horse and it’s setting x
Lovely setting, great ambience, service very good but
Lovely setting well worth a visit. Good service with a nice choice of food available on the menu x
Went for lunch, was great service, good food.. lovely atmosphere. It was a Monday so was fairly quiet
We’ve always enjoyed the black horse but we were very disappointed this weekend- both the service and food were lacking! To be told ‘just one minute’ abruptly when trying to order 30 minutes after taking our seats was infuriating! The staff looked in disarray frankly.
Lovely spacious outdoor seating, very well laid out with a variety of seating options and a play area for the little ones too.
Food was delicious and staff were friendly and polite.
There is plenty of parking available and also a delightful Farm Shop.
One of the best pubs I've been to for sure!
Very good food. Beautiful outdoor seating area. Staff took a long time to take our order though.
I came back with a friend having been away during COVID
New management I believe who have done their very best to make the dining experience as good as ever
Loved the garden and Bubbles and the Farm Shop which was a very welcome surprise
I will be back
2 people for quick lunch - 2 main courses, shared starter and 3 drinks was £80 and is not good value for sitting on a bench. A Nicoise salad without the tuna was £14 and then £8 to add tuna.
I like the pub a lot, the quality is good but the value for money for this reasonable quality is poor, given the competition.
Beautiful pub, very clean and tidy. The food is over priced by a fair bit and the portion sizes are very small, we both had Matinated Chicken skewers which was lovely BUT it was 2 small skewers with a bit of lettuce and a piece of flat bread! We Expected much more for the price but never the less it was lovely however you would need to eat again later as this isn’t enough for an evening meal.
Great food - and lovely service.
A really fabulous spot for lunch.
Good food, good service - nothing to complain about !
Absolutely loved this place, great setting, lovely staff and food was superb! Can’t wait to go back!
Lovely outdoor setting with lovely staff and a very nice menu. Thoroughly enjoyed our meal there (and visit to the Farm shop) and we will be back.
Nice place to visit , great atmosphere, food was ok ,value for money not so sure about . Very expensive for what you get, very much mayfair prices in my opinion
Nice Sunday lunch
The Bacardi and Coke I ordered was drowned in a sweet sickly imitation of Coke/Pepsi and consequently I could not taste the Bacardi. The meze starter for two was very disappointing as three of the dishes were obviously the ones you can buy in jars from supermarkets and the hummus was tasteless. Both the fillet steaks we ordered were not cooked as requested. The single shallot on each of our plates was cooked in its outer skin and the only edible soft part was tiny. The overall service was poor. We waited fifteen minutes for the dessert menu we requested, then finally gave up and asked for the bill. The food was overpriced for what we received. A disappointing anniversary meal which has put us off visiting again which is a pity as we have visited The Black Horse a few times prior to the first lockdown and always found the food and service to be of a good standard.
We have been going to the Black Horse for several years. The food is always good and we have no complain. However, since the beginning, the service was never very good and recently before the lockdown got even worse. Yesterday we wanted to try it again, as usual the food was good but regrettably the service remained as bad and erratic as ever. All the waiters and waitresses are very polite and pleasant and no complaint about this. However it seems that they have not been given the proper training in order to offer a professional and adequate service to the customers. This obviously reflects badly on the management and owners and not on the waiting staff.
Unless the management makes an effort to train their waiting staff, I am afraid The Black Horse will start losing some of their loyal customers including us.
By the way, yesterday when we were there, we heard a couple of ladies at the next table also complaining about the service
The food was delicious as always but the service left a lot to be desired. Took over an hour for our food order to be taken. Drinks orders were slow. Had to keep trying to get the attention of a waitress throughout.
2 desserts didn’t come. We asked a member of the team to find out where they were and she just shrugged and went off. Still no desserts. Bill came with all the desserts on so we asked for the two to be removed as they never arrived. No apology just bill taken away. It came back with a 12% service charge on which I argued was very high for the service we received. The answer I got was that it was stated on the menu. I don’t mind paying a service charge but when the service has been terrible I prefer to have the option.
The Black Horse has been our go to as the children love the play area but the service seems to be slowly slipping. We will go elsewhere next time unfortunately.
I did email directly with my experience and ask for a reply which I never received. Again not the service I would expect.
I would have to say the service was bad!!
The staff there are young, not particularly interested in the service and don’t really have any knowledge of how to talk to customers.
The food is good but ruined by the overall experience of the service.
We arrived just before 2pm. By the time we had been given and eaten our starters it was 3.15pm which was far too long to wait. We did complain about the service and when presented with the bill we were given money off. The poor service ruined the meal to be honest. It felt that there were not enough staff to manage the influx of customers on a Saturday afternoon and that organisation between the front line staff and the kitchen was inconsistent as others who arrived after us were served the main course after starters before us.
The service contrasted with an earlier visit in the middle of May where the service and food were excellent.
The Black Horse in Fulmer is such a lovely setting. Unfortunately we experienced very slow service for our visit - I had to find a waiter to take our order and starters arrived 45 minutes later. The food was pretty good but I won’t be back any time soon because of the slightly dodgy service. I think there were too few serving staff for the number of people dining. Sadly, not a great experience for us.
Michelin star prices which is fine but definitely not Michelin star service - 10mins for 2 drinks to arrive at our table after ordering. Had to ask twice for the bill. Basic things they need to do much better on
We all enjoyed our meal. Service could have been a bit sharper.
The service was appallingly slow and it was very expensive for mediocre food.
Staff were friendly, food was ample and tasty.
Excellent outdoor seating with lots of space.
Excellent food and service.
Fantastic old pub.
Always come back here.
Saturday lunch at 1:30 and good to see well stocked kitchen with nothing having run out, which in other places is common as kitchens get back to normal. Food is very good here but it is one of the most expensive pub menus in the area so you expect to pay more but thankfully you also get a high standard! Excellent range of drinks, and enough staff to deliver attentive and friendly service! Great to see this Fulmer landmark back up and running. The lockdown farm shop which is going to be a permanent feature is also a great way to finish the visit. There is a cafe in there too which we will be back soon to try! All good !
Met with a friend for lunch on a really awful wet day so we ate inside on table 16 - a really good table to chose looking outside
The food as usual was good and enjoyable
A good way to spend a wet day
Birthday lunch for my daughter on a beautiful sunny day. Outdoor seating was perfect. We all enjoyed our food....mezzo to share, followed by chicken skewers, katsu curry & scampi - all dishes well presented and beautifully cooked. Could not fault our waitress service which was well timed and polite.
The only small improvement would have been some recognition for the birthday girl...perhaps a pretty individual cake & candle? (I had noted on the reservation, when asked, that the occasion was a birthday). Just would have been a nice finishing touch.
Definitely look forward to eating here again & would recommend.
Lovely food and atmosphere and great service. A great experience!
A place I would not to return to.
Poor Service, food and ambience
Nice venue & garden, slow service abd over priced drinks. £9 for a small house wine.
No condiments or cutlery & had to wait 20 mins to be served.
Fantastic pub, good food, but awful service. Waited 25 minutes for the wine menu !
Loved the outside area. Really smart. Our mains were great. The chocolate brownie was poor. All our young waiting staff were helpful and eager to please but the service was exceptionally slow. We waited half an hour for dessert. Overall the meal was expensive. I may visit again but would skip pudding and go at a quieter time.
Outdoor seating ergonomically poor.
Food good but small portions particularly for the cost. Poor value.
Staff very pleasant
We sat outside on the bench seats. They are quite low and the seats are a little distant from the table area so not very comfortable especially if one is tall. Service although enthusiastic is unfortunately inexperienced. Presumably as a result of current difficulties finding knowledgeable waiting staff. I hope standards will improve as otherwise the setting is great.
