The food here was delicious. Get the prime rib mac and cheese, and be prepared to wish you had ordered two. I got the seafood bake as my entree and found it really tasty and very filling. I did not need the side I ordered. Someone else in my party got the burger (with brie and bacon...yum) and someone else got a steak which they loved. All meat was cooked exactly to how we ordered it, which is nice too. Would definitely return!

Overall we really enjoyed our time at the Black horse. God was good and our waiter was nice. Also the value was pretty good too

Very attentive staff, excellent food. Prime rib was perfect. Do not leave without having a slice of chocolate mousse cake!

For as long as I can remember, the Black Horse Tavern has been avoided by most Mendham residents--even those who are willing to wait on line for a seat in the Pub next door. Hardly anyone had a good word to say about it. Then recently I noticed some positive reviews and decided to give it a try on a Saturday night. The interior has been completely re-done, so it feels much more contemporary eatery and less dusty hunting lodge. The wait staff were very cordial. And that's about it for positive comments. We (four slim-to-normal sized adults) were seated in a booth in the bar. It was so cramped that we had to give our coats to our waitress for stowage elsewhere--not a deal breaker, but worth noting if you are a plus-size diner. The chopped salad, which three of us ordered as an appetizer, was inedible--the "house white balsamic vinaigrette" is so acidic it made my nose run. The other two diners choked down more of it than I did, but all agreed it was awful. When the waitress noticed that much of the salad remained on our plates when she cleared the course, she offered to give us a different salad to-go, which was nice, but beside the point. My husband had the Inn Seafood Bake, which he did enjoy. I had the Boneless Short-rib Stew, which was unremarkable. The meat was tender, but it was under-seasoned. The most exciting best part of the evening was retrieving our coats: "Go up the stairs and turn left." Those directions led us to a small room that was the room equivalent of your kitchen junk drawer. Along one wall was a rack of coats. The rest of the room was occupied by a pile of (broken?) furniture, a vacuum cleaner, and I don't remember what else. One of our coats was found crumpled in a corner on the floor. A poor coat-"check" experience is obviously not a reason to pan a restaurant, but it is does support my contention that the Black Horse Tavern is still not ready for prime time, which is too bad. I really wanted to like it.

The ambience is always lovely at the BH Tavern. I rated service poorly due to our waitress. Either she was new or just not a good server. 1 of our meals came out wrong, so 1 in our party had to wait for a redo - she barely apologized for the wait. Service in general took a very long time for our table compared to other tables in the restaurant that evening. And the restaurant was pretty quiet. Our waitress then spilled a boiling cup of hot water all over my lap when attempting to serve me tea by reaching across my husband for some reason to try to serve me. The rest of the staff were lovely about it. Hostess / manager came over to bring me ice, extra napkins, etc. Those 2 ladies were very attentive. But I did think it was rather pathetic, that they only took our 2 kids desserts (and the tea) off the bill as an apology. Staff did call my husband the following day to see if I was okay, which I was. No lasting effects from the spill. But spending the rest of the evening in soaking wet pants surely was not enjoyable way to end our night out at the Tavern.

Wonderful Thanksgiving day dinner. Great, attentive service. Friendly staff. Very nice atmosphere. Glad we chose to spend out Thanksgiving there.

We enjoyed a lovely Thanksgiving dinner. The service was friendly and impeccable, the food portions generous and tasty and the overall ambiance was cozy. We weren't rushed and that was so nice. We plan on coming back for Christmas to try the pub and have added the Tavern to our list of favorite dining!
