The Black Forest Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Our food was good, the ambiance was good. My husband and I are both earthing ketogenic so we were careful with our orders. When dinner came we bit into the purple cabbage and it tasted sweet. When I asked to waiter if there was sugar in the cabbage he replied yes. I told him I couldn't eat sugar. He just said, "Oh." And walked away. I was really disappointed in that; both the sugar and the waiter not really addressing it.
This was a good place - glad we went. There is a lot of meat, so it's a bit heavy if you aren't paying attention. Good beer because the Krombacher dark to start and the pilsner with schnitzel. We both agreed the fare would be better in the winter vs the summer, but we'd definitely go back next time in Harrison for a couple of nights.
I love this place and will keep coming back. But our waitress was not nice, sort of slammed dishes down, reached across people to set stuff down. Just was very disappointing because service in the past has been very pleasant.
The bratwurst and schnitzel dishes were flavorful and abundant. Escargot, excellent and was the children's menu. Female server was friendly and knowledgeable. Cocktails on the high side, but was expected for where the restaurant was located. My family will definitely dine again and we would recommend this establishment to others.
We enjoyed a Birthday dinner here last Sat. night. Our meal choices were varied, bratwurst, schnitzel and pork hocks. All the food was excellent. Staff was very friendly and efficient. The only complainet we have is there was also a very large party there and it was very noisy. I would definately recommend the Black Forest to others.
Have been dining here for over 15 years, whenever we visit Harrison. While the food is always great - our last visit really surprised with how little care is taken any where else. Carpets are old, although even a vacuum would help - and the bathroom was pretty appalling. Staff poked in their head and said everything okay in here - I quickly said no and they just short of shrugged - we saw no one go to tend plugged toilets or downed cloth rollers on the hands dryer. While there is charm in the decor indeed, many things now seem to have become downright ratty. The service was definitely so rushed it was rude - and it’s tough to pay nearly four bucks a soda at a place with no free refills and a 500ml glass that is still mostly ice.
Some things really aren’t what they used to be :(
Were in town celebrating our anniversary during a snow storm late Dec 2017. Had a reservation showed up early , was seated right away anyway which was impressive. Place was packed with all sorts of groups, couples etc. Staff was super friendly made us feel welcome. Both ordered the schnitzel (it is available a dozen or more ways) arrived quickly was delicious and healthy portion. The wine was wonderful and fairly priced.
A really nice efficiently run operation. I would definitely recommend dining here and will again when next in town.
I would highly recommend people NOT go to this restaurant. My husband and I went for our 6 year wedding anniversary. The hostess who seated us was cold and actually ignored me when I said hello, as well as when I said thank you to her for seating us. Not one word to us. Not even a smile. Like wise with out waitress, she too was unfriendly and non cordial. Cold and inefficient. Now the food? Had the house salad to start. There was next to no dressing on it. It was actually mostly bare lettuce that I choked down. Literally a few drops on top parts of the lettuce leaf. My schnitzel was the gypsy vegetarian one, which was tolerable. My husband had the chicken breast tofino. The German pasta that came with it was quite possibly the most tasteless thing I have ever tasted. Literally. Like flour and water in a lump in my mouth. My husband is the least picky person I know with regards to food, and he was appalled and actually could not even eat it. And I mean I have never in the 10 years I’ve know him heard him voice such shock and amazement at the terrible taste of something he was attempting to eat. I had a soda water and lime, which The waitress never refilled, or asked if we wanted anything else to drink. The restaurant temperature was cold, I never even took my jacket off or unzipped it, and it was too noisy. One of these things alone could have been tolerable, but between the poor hostess and waitress, the terrible food, and the unwelcoming atmosphere, we will never go back to this restaurant. Ever.
They just need to be more considerate when they seat people, they restaurant was pretty much empty by the time we arrived, neither of us are really petite people and they tried to squish us in the upper table that seats two people and there were already another two people in that space, the waitress saw how uncomfortable we were and offered us a more spacious space which was much more comfortable for us, maybe the hosting staff needs to assess people a bit first and make some adjusments...I can understand if the establishment was full but kudos to our waitress.....
As always the food is amazing...great German cuisine. The only complaint we had this time was our main course came out before we had a chance to finish our salads and appies. We felt rushed and wished we had another 10 or 15 minutes between courses. Otherwise...one of our favorite restaurants.
My family of 9 (3 adult couples, 3 pre school aged kids) loved our meal. They do traditional German food with really nice gravies and sauces. Schnitzel and Rouladin were a hit. Didn’t have much room for desert but the strudel was delicious! Service was really great - friendly and attentive. Great place to eat in Harrison!
