The Black Forest Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
They just need to be more considerate when they seat people, they restaurant was pretty much empty by the time we arrived, neither of us are really petite people and they tried to squish us in the upper table that seats two people and there were already another two people in that space, the waitress saw how uncomfortable we were and offered us a more spacious space which was much more comfortable for us, maybe the hosting staff needs to assess people a bit first and make some adjusments...I can understand if the establishment was full but kudos to our waitress.....
As always the food is amazing...great German cuisine. The only complaint we had this time was our main course came out before we had a chance to finish our salads and appies. We felt rushed and wished we had another 10 or 15 minutes between courses. Otherwise...one of our favorite restaurants.
My family of 9 (3 adult couples, 3 pre school aged kids) loved our meal. They do traditional German food with really nice gravies and sauces. Schnitzel and Rouladin were a hit. Didn’t have much room for desert but the strudel was delicious! Service was really great - friendly and attentive. Great place to eat in Harrison!
We were on a two day get away in Harrison Hot Springs. Three months previous I had been to The Black Forest Restaurant in Harrison's celebrating a special birthday with my girl friends and I really enjoy the schnitzel dinner. This time I was with my husband. We both ordered a specialty schnitzel and like the last time we thoroughly enjoyed the dinners. The portion side was large and the food was delicious. There was nothing left on our plates. We sat in the enclosed patio and our waitress was very pleasant and efficient. Next time we are in Harrison's I will definitely return for a schnitzel dinner.
We have visited this restaurant few times in the past 4 years. The main reason for choosing it for our anniversary dinner was German pan fried schnitzel. We drove 12 hours from Northern Alberta to be told that they do not have pan fried schnitzel although the menus list pan fried Vienna schnitzel. We were very disappointed to say least. My wife tried their deep fried schnitzel and was terrible. I tried meatloaf with some kind of souce which tasted like cough drop. Service was poor, our server brought wrong beer and wine. This was the last time we dine there and we do not recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for genuine German food. That was a terrible experience for us.
Black Forest is a regular date night destination for my wife and I. T he food is amazing and even the rare occasion of mediocre service doesn't detract from the overall experience. If Harrison Hot Springs had nothing else to offer we would very likely still make the trip out for dinner.
Our table was ready when we arrived and we were met with very friendly and helpful staff.
they had set up inside for us and we asked for an outside table. They were very happy to do the reset and this happened very quickly. the service was prompt and very professional. The food was excellent and came quite quickly. I am so looking forward to visiting the BLACK FOREST restaurant again soon.
We enjoyed our meal. Reminded us of my family's home cooking (German heritage). Good hearty eating, but as German food is....not a "wow" taste experience (i.e. Thai or East Indian cuisine). Our waiter was attentive and helpful.
We were a party of seven older adults who have travelled and spent time in the Alsac and in central and south Germany. The food was so-so. Several ordered the jäeger schnitzel and we all found the pork overdone and somewhat tougher than our expectations. While a bit overdone, we enjoyed the red cabbage. Service was friendly and fully satisfactory.
Excellent waterfront location.
Operating in a small tourist dependent village, the restaurant has its challenges. We have no complaints.
This place looks great, the food came
Out fast and was good and if it wasn't for the terrible service it would've made for an overall fun 30th birthday dinner for my wife.
The service started off bad with a 'go ahead and seat yourself' to a girl with zero personality shoving some menus into the plates on the table and mumbling something while walking away and then the waiter was just never around. It took him a very long time just to bring out four tiny slices of bread and we waited for quite some time after our meal until he happened to be walking past and we managed to flag him down for a desert menu. He did not return at this point and we finally just walked down to the entrance to pay.
Aside from that just small things like no authentic huge beer steins, no käse spätzle, no cranberry sauce.. not the end of the world but if you've ever been to any half decent German restaurant, never mind to one in Germany, you may be disappointed.. but as said before the food was good and the location is nice.
Our experience on August 2nd, 2017 was beyond great! Our server, Scott was extremely professional and wonderfully friendly. Very attentive without hovering or pestering. All of his tables seemed very happy. He helped make the experience wonderful. We were on our first ever family vacation and I wanted to share one of my favorite restaurants from my childhood memories with my family and it was perfect. I have a very dangerous mushroom allergy. With all the dishes that had mushrooms as a main ingredient, including 2 that my husband ordered, plus the dish I ordered originally came with mushroom sauce, I had no reaction from cross contamination at all. This goes to prove how clean their kitchen is kept! Awesome! (Unlike a 5 star restaurant, that had previous knowledge of and a direct reminder to the hostess and server. It almost ruined our vacation the very first night!) I'd like to Thank The Black Forest Restaurant and Scott for exceeding my expectations! We will return very soon!
The food here is authentic German fair, cooked to perfection. The service is friendly and the atmosphere transports you. I highly recommend the Vienna Schnitzel. It came with pan fried potatoes and perfectly cooked vegetables. The children's menu was a hit with the kids too.
Even though the restaurant is in beautiful Harrison Hot Springs, you don't go there for the scenery. You go for the food, i.e., the schnitzel. Reserving via Open Table was easy and our table was ready and waiting for our 7pm arrival. Our waitress Amie was a gem. Her efforts to keep all 13 of us happy didn't go unnoticed. No question she earned the 20% tip the fellas put down.
