The Black Forest Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
We were on a two day get away in Harrison Hot Springs. Three months previous I had been to The Black Forest Restaurant in Harrison's celebrating a special birthday with my girl friends and I really enjoy the schnitzel dinner. This time I was with my husband. We both ordered a specialty schnitzel and like the last time we thoroughly enjoyed the dinners. The portion side was large and the food was delicious. There was nothing left on our plates. We sat in the enclosed patio and our waitress was very pleasant and efficient. Next time we are in Harrison's I will definitely return for a schnitzel dinner.
We have visited this restaurant few times in the past 4 years. The main reason for choosing it for our anniversary dinner was German pan fried schnitzel. We drove 12 hours from Northern Alberta to be told that they do not have pan fried schnitzel although the menus list pan fried Vienna schnitzel. We were very disappointed to say least. My wife tried their deep fried schnitzel and was terrible. I tried meatloaf with some kind of souce which tasted like cough drop. Service was poor, our server brought wrong beer and wine. This was the last time we dine there and we do not recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for genuine German food. That was a terrible experience for us.
Black Forest is a regular date night destination for my wife and I. T he food is amazing and even the rare occasion of mediocre service doesn't detract from the overall experience. If Harrison Hot Springs had nothing else to offer we would very likely still make the trip out for dinner.
Our table was ready when we arrived and we were met with very friendly and helpful staff.
they had set up inside for us and we asked for an outside table. They were very happy to do the reset and this happened very quickly. the service was prompt and very professional. The food was excellent and came quite quickly. I am so looking forward to visiting the BLACK FOREST restaurant again soon.
We enjoyed our meal. Reminded us of my family's home cooking (German heritage). Good hearty eating, but as German food is....not a "wow" taste experience (i.e. Thai or East Indian cuisine). Our waiter was attentive and helpful.
We were a party of seven older adults who have travelled and spent time in the Alsac and in central and south Germany. The food was so-so. Several ordered the jäeger schnitzel and we all found the pork overdone and somewhat tougher than our expectations. While a bit overdone, we enjoyed the red cabbage. Service was friendly and fully satisfactory.
Excellent waterfront location.
Operating in a small tourist dependent village, the restaurant has its challenges. We have no complaints.
This place looks great, the food came
Out fast and was good and if it wasn't for the terrible service it would've made for an overall fun 30th birthday dinner for my wife.
The service started off bad with a 'go ahead and seat yourself' to a girl with zero personality shoving some menus into the plates on the table and mumbling something while walking away and then the waiter was just never around. It took him a very long time just to bring out four tiny slices of bread and we waited for quite some time after our meal until he happened to be walking past and we managed to flag him down for a desert menu. He did not return at this point and we finally just walked down to the entrance to pay.
Aside from that just small things like no authentic huge beer steins, no käse spätzle, no cranberry sauce.. not the end of the world but if you've ever been to any half decent German restaurant, never mind to one in Germany, you may be disappointed.. but as said before the food was good and the location is nice.
Our experience on August 2nd, 2017 was beyond great! Our server, Scott was extremely professional and wonderfully friendly. Very attentive without hovering or pestering. All of his tables seemed very happy. He helped make the experience wonderful. We were on our first ever family vacation and I wanted to share one of my favorite restaurants from my childhood memories with my family and it was perfect. I have a very dangerous mushroom allergy. With all the dishes that had mushrooms as a main ingredient, including 2 that my husband ordered, plus the dish I ordered originally came with mushroom sauce, I had no reaction from cross contamination at all. This goes to prove how clean their kitchen is kept! Awesome! (Unlike a 5 star restaurant, that had previous knowledge of and a direct reminder to the hostess and server. It almost ruined our vacation the very first night!) I'd like to Thank The Black Forest Restaurant and Scott for exceeding my expectations! We will return very soon!
The food here is authentic German fair, cooked to perfection. The service is friendly and the atmosphere transports you. I highly recommend the Vienna Schnitzel. It came with pan fried potatoes and perfectly cooked vegetables. The children's menu was a hit with the kids too.
Even though the restaurant is in beautiful Harrison Hot Springs, you don't go there for the scenery. You go for the food, i.e., the schnitzel. Reserving via Open Table was easy and our table was ready and waiting for our 7pm arrival. Our waitress Amie was a gem. Her efforts to keep all 13 of us happy didn't go unnoticed. No question she earned the 20% tip the fellas put down.
The Black Forest Restaurant is a steak and schnitzel house and I am disappointedt o say that they did not seem to be able to cook either very well. I made the reservation here based on a number of extremely positive reviews on a number of online review sites. And I must say I am so unhappy with my decision.
Keeping with the European theme (I am European so I know what the theme is) they served lovely warm baguette bread which was a nice touch (a second helping does set you back a few dollars but you dont want to be filling up on bread anyway).
For starters we opted to share a portion of calamari. Portion size was ok, especially if it were for only one person, but the quality of the fish paired with the fact that it was overcooked made for a let down.
For mains- I ordered the bratwurst schnitzel. It came out and was a great size portion. And I can say that it was tasty. I enjoyed it. It wasn't amazing but it was good. But my boyfriend ordered the steak and schnitzel and this is where it took a total nose dive. This restaurant claims to be a steak and schnitzel house so when they serve up below par orders of both you know there is something wrong. First the portion of both meats on this option are TINY - half schnitzel and a very small steak, but my boyfriend ordered a medium rare steak which came out totally overcooked. Completely too well-done (even for me and I order my steak well done). When we alerted the waiter he was apologetic and removed the steak from the plate. But this left G having to eat the remainder of his meal until another steak was brought out. We went for a meal together to eat all of our meal together. The waiter offered a free pint to G for the inconvenience but really it should have been a free dinner because this wasn't worth paying for.
I would not recommend this place. An utter disappointment.
