Very nice dinner with a great client.
The crab cakes are delicious - fresh, generously-portioned, and delicious with very little filler. The atmosphere of the restaurant is relaxed, peaceful. We especially eating on the patio when the weather is warm.
Slow to get food on table. A little inattentive
Thanksgiving menu and prices not listed online, hard time getting someone to call me back. Made reservation online but they acted like they weren’t expecting us. Pulled out my confirmation. Ridiculous because the place was empty. Food was awful but waitress was good. A big disappointment.
I would recommend The Bench to a friend for brunch when business functions are less likely to be going on. We went on a weeknight and there were several large parties (30+) which quickly filled this relatively small restaurant in the hotel lobby. In the summer, I'm sure the extended patio seating is very nice.
We enjoyed a flatbread appetizer and shared a couple of the sandwiches/hamburgers all of which were tasty.

I love this place. The staff is friendly and efficient. The entire hotel staff are so welcoming. Nice "lake" view out the back.
Entrée selection unappealing, pilaf remained on the plate.
Because of the pilaf, chef David Johnson provided us with excellent desserts, free of charge.
Had high expectations from the reviews and I'm a marriot rewards member so even more so. but it was very underwhelming to say the least. in addition, it was very very loud! and we sat and waited for a server to come over and at least take a drink order or offer water for 15minutes. after than time, no one showed up, so we left. on the way out the door, the hostess who just sat us just said good bye. it was very very unimpressive and would not recommend it to anyone, or go again.

Waitress wonderful. However, I made reservation based on the special buy one crab cake full price get another half price.
Waitress and upper mgt were not aware of offer. I lost the advertisement but I showed proof I was a Bench VIP. I received a hamburger at half price after purchase of crab cake.

This is my new go-to lunch spot. It is minutes from my office. Small menu with good choices.

This is a hotel restaurant with a fairly limited menu though there are choices both for entrees & sandwiches. Parking is pretty easy.
We decided on the Bench for Christmas Dinner after a home dinner didn't work out, based on reasonable recommendations and few other options. This was a major mistake. First the humus appetizer came with inedible brick hard pita bread, which we had to return. THEN, worst we were told all 3 of the entrees that we were interested in ordering were UNAVAILABLE, and of the 6 entrees on the menu there were only 3 options left, and there was only 1 serving left of one of them (glad we got there when we did, at 5:30). So we quickly ordered the last chicken and 2 orders of crabcakes, while they were still there; there weren't many other diners at the time. Server, who was pleasant, apologized. Unbelievable. Would never go back.
Both Bartenders were really friendly! We enjoyed that, but food wasn't special, just ok!
We were celebrating our anniversary. The service, the ambiance, and food was great. Our server was kind and attentive. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted. I explain that we were early for our reservations and we were properly seated without hesitation by the hostess. The appetizer and our entrees were great.
We eat at this restaurant a couple of times a year. We usually share the restaurant with only a handful of people. This visit the restaurant was full and, not surprisingly, much noisier than is our preference. They also had a new menu with some new and appetizing choices. The food was quite good. Inspite of the noise (2 weddings & many young adult soccer players watching a soccer tournament on numerous TV screens) we found our dinner a pleasant surprise.
Poor service, only ordered a starter and 2 drinks before we decided to leave.
I decided that instead of cooking Christmas dinner, I would take my family out and be able to relax and enjoy the time with them. It was a good choice!
Great view out over the lake. Good food and service. Really really dog friendly. We sat outside with our puppy who was provided with treats and a dog bowl to drink from.
Ate out on the patio overlooking the lake - a great spot to relax and catch up with friends. Service was very friendly and efficient. Good sandwiches. Will definitely go again- want to try Happy Hour too.

Most enjoyable - fine service - delicious steak entree
My date and I decided to try a local restaurant that we had previously walked past many times. I'm speaking of "The Bench" in the Gaithersburg Marriott Washingtonian Hotel located next to the lake in the Washingtonian Center. My date and I had strolled past the outdoor cafe of "The Bench" many times on the path around the lake. We decided to have dinner there the other night and were blown away. The restaurant's interior is elegant and up to the Marriott standards I've grown to expect. Our server was extremely welcoming, friendly, and knowledgeable about the menu. Our food was delivered promptly and timed perfectly between courses. The dishes we ordered had a great presentation, were hot, and, most importantly, were copious in quantity and quality! We definitely will tell our friends and family of our new found dining gem!
The layout, menu, and service all hearken to the typical hotel restaurant format, but there just that touch better and in a significantly better location than you would expect. The food was good, the service was friendly, and overall I thought it was a rather unexpectedly good experience. That said,this is all relative to the typical hotel restaurant experience. This isn't a full-blown restaurants fit for foodies or the like. It is an unexpectedly good hotel restaurant if you're staying there or even if you work in the area and are looking for a lunch spot.

Hotel restaurant feels like it is in the middle of the hotel lobby. Too loud, poor service, slow service, out of certain items listed on the menu, overpriced.
We've gone to The Bench before and enjoyed everything about it. This time the service was laughable. There were 3 restaurant employees with 3 tables in the entire restaurant and we had to ask for everything. They sat us outdoors on an August afternoon with temps at 85 degrees. They didn't even offer a glass of water. No one came back to refill the water glasses and we only saw them smile when they came to collect a tip. Our salads were tasty and we definitely enjoyed them. Desserts were good as well but we had to prompt them to ask if we even wanted dessert.
The only reason we visited this place this was the only restaurant in Rio with no wait time. It was Friday night and all the good places around the lake were booked with 1hr + waiting list. What I can tell. The only good thing about this place is location, if you seat outside you look at the lake. Food was not great and overpriced, the same goes for drinks. The food came out after about an hour waiting. Highly not recommended!
It was slightly busier than the last time I came here. The service was slower than usual. The alcoholic beverage was stronger than last time. The food was not as good as the last time. I ordered Mini Sliders and the meat was not medium but well done. It wasn't juicy like the first time I had it. My friend ordered sea salt chips with onion dip which was delicious but slightly overpriced.
The restaurant is about what you would expect from a hotel restaurant: Good but not great food, good but not great service, good but not great ambience, and slightly overpriced. If you are staying at the hotel and didn't feel like driving to another restaurant, it is not a bad place to eat. If your are used to eating at restaurants in Bethesda/Chevy Chase, then you will likely be disappointed. The Bench is more upscale then you will find in the chain restaurants surrounding it. However, it is not upscale dining. The server was kind, but the kitchen was slow even though they were only half-seated on a Friday at 8 pm. Other reviewer's raved about the devilled eggs--I would have to disagree. The crab cakes were decent with an excellent sauce.
Good location for business lunch - service friendly, food well prepared and quick. Good value for the money and professional atmosphere away from the hubbub.
My wife and i made a last minute call to go there for dinner after seeing ok reviews on open table. I'm not sure where they came from since our experience seemed really sub-par. From the start they didn't have our reservation listed even though i had my open table reservation confirmation. That's just the start and here are another list of items that didn't go well either.
1. Food Service was really slow
2. Server was unexperienced and needed more training
3. Table wasn't cleared before serving the next round
4. Chips that were served were stale
5. Asked for fresh chips and never got them.
6. Had to grab a straw from the bar myself since service was slow and inexperienced.
