About The Beauty Shop
Chef/ Restaurateur- Karen B. Carrier famed for -The Mollie Fontaine Lounge, Do Sushi, Another Roadside Attraction Catering opened Beauty Shop Restaurant in what was once said to be Priscilla Presley's curl-and-dye spot. It's a camp wonderland where the facade is Jetsons-era Vitrolite, a bar replaces the wash sinks, and choice seating is offered beneath hooded Belvedere hair dryers. Carrier is a mad genius of sorts. The restaurant's motto is "Look Good, Eat Good," and while the place makes you want to look good, you will eat good at The Beauty Shop. The menu is widely varied ~ a down -home American stance with world-beat tints and edges. The Beauty Shop is about the coolest, hippest restaurant around. It screams "Memphis", yet does so with ingenuity and originality; it plays a wacky theme to the limit but doesn't stream beyond the pale- It makes you feel good to be there, part of the fun; part of the animated crowd and leaves you well-fed to boot. What could be cooler that that?

The Beauty Shop Ratings and Reviews
One of Memphis’ hidden gems in Cooper Young, The Beauty Shop really was at one time a hair salon. Priscilla Presley is reported to have been a patron!
A salon no longer, the Beauty Shop is not a presumptuous or large place. You can dress up or dress down. If you have group of 5 ask for one of the more secluded booths. It tends to get crowded at the front door at peak times, so either come early or late or make a reservation (strongly recommended).
The mixologist can whip up a special or your favorite. My Grey Goose Cosmo was perfectly blended and chilled. A great start to the first course - a Thai style dumpling with mint that was plenty to share.
The restaurant specializes in seasonal plates and the pumpkin starter my companion had was delicious. We skipped the salad and each ordered favorites - a great coffee-rubbed steak with terrific fried baked potato bites (think a loaded baked potato that looks like a French fry with a delicate Panko crust) and a melt in your mouth pork shoulder with Napa cabbage slaw and some lovely sauces all around plus a slightly sweet Johnnycake to offset the savory. The perfect bite - pork, slaw, sauce, cake — heavenly...
Dessert was a slightly dry lemon pound cake with Fresh strawberries, homemade ice cream and Chantilly cream. This was a new dessert for us. I strongly recommend their gelato and the cannelloni if you come.
We had a lovely Valentines dinner with very friendly, smiling service. The staff was dressed for the evening and made everything feel special.
If you’re looking for a cool place, great menu, eclectic decor where you can really feel the Memphis vibe, check out The Beauty Shop. You won’t be disappointed.
We were celebrating my daughter’s 30th birthday. The Beauty Shop never disappoints. The food was fabulous. From the usual offerings to the specials of the night, everyone was pleased and satisfied. We love this restaurants for everything from a quick lunch to celebrating a special event.
Went for sunday brunch, and they were out of half the menu, they missed putting in half our order (but did comp it so not that big of a deal), and the food we did get was not really that great. The atmosphere was very noisy and crowded, tables on top of one another. On the up side we were seated immediately so their reservation system works well and our server was really nice. The food was overpriced in my opinion, but it is the cooper young district, so it's to be expected.
If you want a great brunch, complete with conversation instead of screaming, I would look elsewhere.
We had a great girls lunch at the Beauty Shop yesterday! The hostess was friendly and we enjoyed the old washing sinks and hairdryers incorporated into the decor. The neighborhood and restaurant were cute and hip. The food and drinks were excellent. We enjoyed the drinks, tacos, fries, burgers, and salad. The only thing I would change was the demeanor of the wait staff. They were not as friendly as the hostess and mixed up our side dishes. Because we were passing through town and needed to get on the road, we did not fuss about it. I would go back again and refer it to a friend. The two waitresses could have just been having an off day.
Hostess was so sweet. We had reservations but the prior occupants were still at table. She multi tasked all her other duties, plus a ful house, while also checking in with us eveey few minutes with a status.. and a smile and kindness each time. It set the tone for what could have been a frustrating situation. Grapefruit mimosa was great, as was the quiche, lemon ricotta pancakes, breakfast sausage, and hashrbowns.
Two of us dined on a Saturday night. It was very busy but we were seated at our reservation time. I got one of the beauty salon chairs with the hair dryer attached and it was a very uncomfortable seat to be in, and the hair dryer hovering over my head was awkward. My dining partner switched seats with me but the chair was along the main aisle where I was continuously bumped by other patrons headed to their seats and the wait staff. We found a nice bottle of wine from the wine list. It seemed most patrons were having cocktails and they did indeed look great. My barramundi entree was delicious, especially the succotash. My dining partner had a four cheese ravioli entree and he enjoyed it very much. We split a chocolate crepe for dessert and it was very good also. We liked the food and drink very much, as well as the overall atmosphere, but found the noise level and seating uncomfortable.
Both waitressses with an attitude!
The waiter I got on my last visit before this one was really nice and polite. Food was great as usual but poor service . Plus in 18 degree freezing weather their heating on our side of the restaurant had conked out so we had to wear our coats throughout the dinner.
This was my family's absolute favorite restaurant that we visited on our recent (and first) trip to Memphis - and we had a lot of great meals! The decor was so cute, the service was very friendly and attentive, and best of all the food was amazing. The menu was quite interesting, and the reasonably sized portions allowed us to save room for delicious desserts (with the coconut cake, peppermint and coconut gelato, and banana nutella crepes being the favorites). Our daughter wants to move to Memphis just to come here more often. We'll definitely be back if we ever are back in town.
An actual beauty shop back the day, apparently. They make great use of the existing styling and drying spaces, creatively providing booth and table seating in the back room. The extensive dessert menu was written on one of the mirrors.
Great comfort foods with a modern twist. Excellent service from knowledgeable and attentive servers. It was a great night out for my girlfriend and myself.
We were only in Memphis for one night and a friend recommended the Beauty Shop to us. We were very impressed overall. The creative menu made it difficult to choose and we ended up having the same thing - the shrimp and scallops. It was fantastic! Such fresh ingredients and unusual flavors that blended perfectly - I would definitely order the dish again. I also loved the atmosphere. I was seated under a working hair dryer. The crowd was lively and our server was very attentive. I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
We've been traveling in Tennessee for a week and this is the best food by far we have had. I had the Japanese eggplant for starters, and talk about a flavor explosion! Hubby had the Beet Clementine Salad and it was wonderful. For entree, I had the Barramunda, and it was EXCELLENT! Highly recommend-- quirky interesting space as well.
We had picked a late reservation, but they were both able and grateful to seat us early (last res on Christmas Eve). The place was packed, so it took a while for our server to get around to us to take our orders, but our drinks and food came out quickly. Everything we ate was amazing, especially the Shrimp a la Plancha and the pan roasted fish. I'm just in town visiting, but if I'm ever back in Memphis I'm going back to The Beauty Shop. It is definitely the best meal I've had here!
The Beauty Shop never fails to satisfy, even after years of occasional visits. It's that rare eatery that doesn't grow old. This small, remarkable restaurant delights the appetite & soothes the soul. Staff & fellow patrons alike create a warm atmosphere, making it hard to leave. Brunch is outstanding & dinner offers creative options that can raise a 'regular meal out' to a new level and make a special occasion memorable. Every corner of this small restaurant offers something to smile about.
