About The Beauty Shop
Chef/ Restaurateur- Karen B. Carrier famed for -The Mollie Fontaine Lounge, Do Sushi, Another Roadside Attraction Catering opened Beauty Shop Restaurant in what was once said to be Priscilla Presley's curl-and-dye spot. It's a camp wonderland where the facade is Jetsons-era Vitrolite, a bar replaces the wash sinks, and choice seating is offered beneath hooded Belvedere hair dryers. Carrier is a mad genius of sorts. The restaurant's motto is "Look Good, Eat Good," and while the place makes you want to look good, you will eat good at The Beauty Shop. The menu is widely varied ~ a down -home American stance with world-beat tints and edges. The Beauty Shop is about the coolest, hippest restaurant around. It screams "Memphis", yet does so with ingenuity and originality; it plays a wacky theme to the limit but doesn't stream beyond the pale- It makes you feel good to be there, part of the fun; part of the animated crowd and leaves you well-fed to boot. What could be cooler that that?

The Beauty Shop Ratings and Reviews
I was in town for a conference, met a new friend and we came here for dinner. We came fairly late--8:30 pm on a Tuesday-- and the restaurant was pretty quiet. I'm sure it's hopping and much more lively at other times but we enjoyed the spacious booth and great atmosphere for a long chat. Our server was expert and gave us very good guidance on our choices. Our dishes were outstanding and the wine pairings were perfect. I am still thinking about those complex flavors and inventive ingredients. We were so glad we came here! Plus, it's a fun and unique setting.
This was a married date on our way to Ballet Memphis. The Panko oysters were outstanding, my wife loved the Lucky Pot. I had the finder special, amazing combination of flavors but the heat ( probably the curry) could have been taken down a notch, Our go to place in midtown! Jim and Cindy Moseley
The Beauty Shop was outstanding- just make sure you have a reservation or you will have a hard time getting in! First and foremost the decor is amazing. From the old washers, to the hand blown light fixtures to the different glasswear- it is all so intriguing. Our food was absolutely wonderful, although we noticed it sat at the kitchen window for a few minutes due to our waiter having a larger table. It still came out warm though! We enjoyed the Bloody Mary’s with bourbon- will definitely be ordering them this way from now on! Our waiter was busy but great with suggestions and very nice. Overall we loved this neighborhood gem!
There was some miscommunication regarding some of the order and refills on drinks, but the manager came out and personally apologized, then the server also voiced her apology to us. Mistakes can happen, so offering an apology and meal comp is always an incredible gesture - and ensures I will continue going back!
Made reservations on the OpenTable app for 2 for 10:15 on a Saturday. We made the reservation just 30 minutes prior after leaving an event in Downtown Memphis. We got there around 10:05 and found it extremely loud inside. What we took as the hostess came up and asked if we were there for dessert. Told her no, we made Dinner reservations for 2. She seemed confused and went to check her computer. We could tell she was not pleased and hastily came back and said she would seat us. I immediately said it was no big deal and we would leave, but she had us follow her to a table. As she was setting the table you could tell she was extremely agitated and was talking as she set the table. The problem was she was talking down to the table, not looking up at us. We had no idea what she was saying as it was so loud and against her voice was directed down to the table. When she was done she just walked away. We stood there in amazement at what just happen. Needless to say we went back upfront told her we apologized for coming in and were leaving. Why would any restaurant advertise availability if they were not open to serve, or past the time they stopped serving, etc? We heard good things about The Beauty Shop and thought it was a good opportunity to try it out. Unfortunately, we will never know, as we will never be going back after this experience. Stay away, too many other good places to eat in this area of town to deal with such bizarre/ rude behavior. I feel bad for whoever owns this place!
The Beauty Shop is among the best restaurants in Memphis right in my own neighborhood of Cooper-Young. Karen Carrier is a master at creative food and atmospheric dining. Expertly crafted cocktails and a small but thoughtful wine program make ordering a drink easy and fun. Food favorites include the Maitake mushrooms and practically everything on the Sunday brunch menu. The ribeye steak special sourced locally from area farms and prepared with varied accompaniments is among my favorite orders.
Sunday Brunch at the Beauty Shop was such an unexpected treat. The beignets were great as well as the Chiquiles. Hubby had chicken and waffles we strongly recommend. Service was great food awesome excellent for out of town visitors. I love the Cooper -Young food experience
Last Saturday, one of my teenage daughters and I had dinner at The Beauty Shop before attending the theater at Playhouse on the Square. As always, our dining experience was exceptional. Our meals were inventive, well prepared and presented, and tasty, and our waiter was attentive, well informed, friendly and timely. There is a consistency of excellence about The Beauty Shop that is so appealing and appreciated. Our family will return time and again.
We go here a lot. My husband and I go a couple times a month for Saturday brunch. It's also a favorite for girls' night. Sometimes I go by myself after work for the apple salad and eat at the bar, chatting with Stephanie and Molly and whoever else is working. The people are even better than the food.
Went for Sunday brunch at the last minute. Luckily I was able to make a reservation thru Open Table. The decor is pretty cool- eating in an old beauty salon. Our server was nice but we felt like she had had enough- it was close to closing time. She didn't tell us about the specials and she never checked on us til after we were done eating. The food quality was average, the creative items available was great! My Bloody Mary was very spicy and good, although missing the okra that's on the menu. Our sticky monkey was either stale or over cooked...didn't like it. The chicken and waffle was pretty good....the mix of flavors was tasty. The steak and egg had great flavor also. The noise level was so bad that we Gave up talking...two large parties ruined it for everyone else but the restaurant can't control that. Go early and enjoy a good breakfast.
The Young Adult Ministry at my church enjoyed the atmosphere of Beauty Shop . It's always crowded so I'm glad I made reservations , although we had to wait a little Erik to be seated. Our server was awesome very attentive . It was some of the members first time attending and they enjoyed everything about it
My trout was cooked to death. The food is expensive for what you get. That would be ok if it was cooked well. No one ever asked. We did not have time to wait for a new meal. The server was friendly but frazzled. We arrive early, so the place was mostly empty so it did not make sense. We were really looking forward to this, so it was a bit of a disappointment. The ambiance is cool but the food was mostly just ok and one meal was greatly overcooked.
I travel to Memphis for work and this is one of my favorite restaurants, that has now become a favorable recommendation. The concept of a previous beauty shop now restaurant is very unique and makes the experience, as you are being waited on - the 70's feel beauty shop is done as tastefully as the dishes. The brushetta was very good and the trout is very fresh.
The Beauty Shop brunch is great as long as you get there early. I really wanted the lemon ricotta pancakes but they had already run out. The Bloody Mary was fabulous and my back-up choice was good. I had indicated on my reservation that it was a special occasion but was never asked what it was and the hostess seating us never asked and didn't give me an opportunity to disclose it either. That was disappointing. I think if you're a regular there, there is a different "feel" than the occasional diner which we are. While engaging, conversations are stilted and rushed. My server was great and very attentive. We enjoy this place for brunch.
Disappointed after all the hype we've read. Food was overcooked and presentation was sloppy. Portions were below average. Po-boys are served on a hamburger bun-- what?? Bloody Mary and Mimosa $9 each with virtually no alcohol, and orange juice was bitter. Bartender had filthy nails. Hard to eat and enjoy when you're swatting away flies, yes, flies, plural. Felt very rushed. Won't be back
