The Bazaar by José Andrés South Beach Ratings and Reviews
We've found ourselves following Chef José Andrés like religious disciples since being blown away by his Seafood Paella at Jaleo in Vegas a year ago. We searched and discovered his recipe for it which we've tried to re-create at home with only passable results.
So when we realized that Bazaar in the SLS Hotel in South Beach was by the same chef (I know...we're a little slow...we don't have José Andrés restaurants in Canada), we of course signed up.
The decor was stunning say the least, highlighted by a giant faux-coral encrusted chandelier and tan and white earth tones throughout the vaulted ceilinged room.
We were once again stunned into reverent awe by the sublime combination of ingredients that elevated dishes such as the Dragon Fruit Tuna Ceviche with Hibiscus "air" (an ethereally light scented foam) and the so succulent Secreto Ibérico to ecclesiastic heights. Or the ridiculously simple but entirely symbiotic Kyushu Oysters with a dollop of Osietra caviar, finished to visually stunning perfection with a wisp of gold foil. (I actually broke my own rule and took a picture of it!}
We couldn't help but overeat and taps after tapas, we cooed like doves and purred like kittens.
The grand finale was a dramatic presentation of a Caipirinha Sorbetto created tableside in a large silver bowl with liquid nitrogen that elicited oos and ahs from our neighbours. It was so refreshing and palette cleansing that we did it again!
Also most noteworthy is the offering of top shelf wines by the glass thanks to an argon-replacement injector called a Coravin. Outstanding and memorable in every way, we are already planning our return.
My wife and I were expecting more from Chef Jose and his team, the food was good, in special the Taco and Clos Siete. The assistant sommelier was great, until our server Mr. Haroon took out our plates without asking if we will continue eating and he just dropped the dessert menu. We felt like we were inviting to leave, really disappointed for a fine dining service.
Besides this situation, the different servers that bring us our dishes were explaining the dishes so fast, that you cant understand and have the proper culinary experience. More training is needed! Overall from 0 to 10, The Bazaar score 4!
The food was inventive and imaginative as all Jose Andres restaurants. The staff was professional and friendly. The underlying tone from the kitchen was hurried. Instead enjoying each dish ( there are several because of tapas style) , many times each dish would arrive before finishing the first. Seems trivial but at this price point you want to enjoy the meal and experience instead feeling that they need your seat
Perfect meal! We did the tasting menu and it was amazing! Absolutely loved every course. Very much a spiritual successor to El Bulli. Chef Andres even does a version of the liquid olive (which is totally delicious and worth getting), which I've always wanted to try! Great cocktails, great service and great experience overall!
One of the worst overall dining experiences - we will probably not go back. We arrive early at 5:50pm. Looking forward another great meal - Bazaar is the total experience. The parking attendant told us $14 - pay later. Dinner was great, service was superb - Johnny. Then the experience that left a bad taste. The attendant said $25 + a good tip if you want your car. I inquired about what happened to $14...you were never told that - you are just an old fool and laughed..then laugh more. My wife was extremely upset when he laugh and mouth off to her. We will get around to your car....40 minutes later. Dining is the total experience. It is unfortunate that one person sours a great experience.
Absolutely fantastic food. We've eaten at many of Jose Andres' restaurants and his name is a mark of quality for us. The Bazaar is no exception. The ambiance is great overall but a bit weird with people passing through the lobby on their way out to the back of the hotel. You're better off requesting a seat away from the doors.
I can not say enough for this dining experience! The food was absolutely different, amazing and delicious. When my son said to try the pb and j foie gras I said no! But we did and it was the best little bite I had of anything. Go here with an open mind and be surprised. It's so worth it!
My husband advised the waiter of a nut allergy, the waiter took notes. While there were none of the nuts he is allergic to were in the meal, there must have been cross contamination in the kitchen. My husband and I ended up walking out of dinner and going straight to the emergency room where he was immediately put on iv’s to counteract the reaction. Please be aware if you have food allergies when eating at this restaurant.
I ordered 7 dishes of food knowing that its tapas style. I assume a few dishes would come at once not 1 dish every 10 minutes. To top it on that, it was literally 1-2 bite of food at a time. How you suppose to eat when your date has nothing to eat. It was pathetic, I was sharing a 1 oz sip of soup with my date when we both each order a soup. I watched a family of 4 looking hysterical because how can you have 1 dish every 10 minutes to share with 4 people when its literally 1-2 bite for $20-$30? The food did not fancy me, it did not taste spectacular for whats it worth. There are better places, with better quality and quantity. I know its a tapas restaurant but this 1-2 bite, 1-dish-at-a-time-thing they having coming out every 10 minutes is stupid for anyone to eat together. It was not enjoyable and there was nothing amazing about the food. I think it taste good but I felt I could cook it and that is a problem to me...
Unexpected flavors come together in a way that is hard to describe. Even a “simple” tapa of bread and ham will surprise you by the freshness of the bread and lightness of the ham. Try the Cuban coffee and foie gras, surprising and hard to forget.
Service is very friendly!
From the moment we walked in my family and friends were greeted by the pleasant smiles of two hostesses. Neither one fit the frazzled and elitist persona of the quintessential Miami “Gate Keeper.” One of the young women even wished my mother a happy birthday, obviously having had read the notes that I included in the reservation. The tone was set for the evening. Johnnie and his team were attentive, helpful, and a fount of knowledge. Our glasses were always full and our questions were always answered. The Manager stopped by the table not only once, but twice to offer more information regarding our tasting menu selections. The tasting menu was simply delightful, from the two caviar dishes, to the pork belly. Everything was unique and unlike anything any of us have ever had. The only downside was the ambience, or lack there of. Unfortunately the restaurant is juxtaposed right smack dab in the middle of the walk way of all the “Day Party” goers who were for the most part stumbling inside and past the tables of a more sober and sophisticated dining crowd.
