The Barge Ratings and Reviews
My annual office party at the Barge was perfect - great food, lovely view, and great service with Audrey. We have dined at the Barge many times and always enjoy going there. The atmosphere is relaxed and homey and the food is fresh and tasty. Overall, a classic lunch venue with a spectacular view of Raritan Bay (especially pretty when it's snowing, as it was last week).
Service was great. Special requests were handled well. There is something for everyone when you're a larger group. Of the several times I've eaten here, this was the first time all my seafood was overcooked. The other members of my group didn't have any issues/
Another delicious meal with friends. It's the only place I'll order broiled scallops since I haven't found another restaurant to compete with the Barge's sizzling plate that keeps everything hot all through the meal. Love the french fries and onion rings also.
While the food was well prepared ( as always) and of good value, the service was quite poor. The Waitress was at first thrown off when we asked for separate checks (we were 2 couples, so only two checks needed). She seemed in a great rush to take our orders -even though the restaurant was only moderately crowded (we sat at a table for 4 in the bar area) and it was far from closing time. In fact, she was in such a rush to serve the salads, that parts of my arrived on my lap - with NO apology or acknowledgment. The main course was prepared as we'd asked but - again - it was served hurridly - almost thrown in from of us. So while we did enjoy the food - the service did make us uncomfortable and that was unnecessary. Despite this, we did leave a propper (15%) tip - but do feel the need to report this poor service .
The Barge never ceases to amaze me. It's so overlooked. Who would ever order escargot there, but I did. What an awesome surprise. Best escargot since 1950 at The Drake, in NY. Sweet, plump, select, delectable, and yet served the old fashioned way: in the shells! Best Manhattan clam chowder, too. I keep going back for more.
My wife ordered the crab cakes and was surprised that they were not crab cakes at all, but fishy tasting fish cakes filled with fish and cheap filler. In addition the meal was topped off by our waiter spilling an entire glass of water in the middle of the table. I don't think I will be back to the barge in my lifetime!
Went for our anniversary which we noted on the reservation. We were seated at a table in the bar area with the TVs blaring and we couldn’t hear each other instead of main dining room. I am allergic to mushrooms. After reviewing the menu and seeing mushrooms listed for some dishes I ordered the Chef Masterpiece, which did not have mushrooms listed. My dish came out covered in them. After telling the server that the menu didn’t list that and my allergy, I requested a new dish be made. 8 minutes later came back out and I start to eat and lo and behold, a mushroom. They just removed them and sent me the original dish. I couldn’t eat it at that point. Was still charged the full meal price but they gave me a piece of cheesecake on the house. Thankfully I didn’t become ill after this experience
I don't typically do this, but this restaurant had to have been one of the worst dining experiences I've had in a long time. I'm writing this review on behalf of my husband because he's a huge fan of Open Table and this is his account. Anyway, prior to dinner, I was away for a few months and had just returned home from a work assignment when my husband suggested we have a "date night". I was really looking forward to the meal because I love seafood and hadn't eaten anything fancy during my work trip. When we arrived, the waitress came to our table to drop off the menus and ask about drinks. She then took about ten minutes to eventually come back with waters and then take our orders. When our orders arrived, they were both drenched in butter and not very appetizing. I ordered the crab cake and my husband had the steak and lobster. Needless to say, my entire meal was soaked in butter and crab cake did not taste like crab AT ALL; not even imitation crab meat. Additionally, my husband's steak and lobster were extremely bland. I really wish we would have liked the food and had a better experience, but that's not the case.
We had dinner for 14 people and it is for our engagement dinner. The owner was very nice and friendly, our waiter was wonderful and really took a good care of us. Everyone was very happy and satisfied with the food. Great time, great place and great meal! Thanks.
Appetizers were very good. Dinner was a little bland and tasteless. I had the steak and shrimp scampi, and both were not very tasty, unless I added plenty of salt and pepper. The shrimp scampi over rice had very little scampi sauce, which made it very dry. That being said, as apps, we had raw clams, clams casino, fried calamari, potato skins - and they all were very good as was dessert.
Nice atmosphere with great views of the sailboats on the river.
Food here is always good so that isn't my complaint. We had a reservation, requesting an outdoor table...we so enjoy the music and trivia games that occur on .Friday and Saturday night. There were many people walking in ahead of us... all without reservations. They were seated in the dining room... we were relegated to the bar ! Very obnoxious patrons surrounded us. The greeter was non existent..... really disappointing evening rather than the pleasant one we anticipated.
Another excellent meal. This is the only restaurant where I order the broiled scallops. They are broiled and served on a sizzling hot plate and are absolutely delicious. Another in our party ordered the monk fish. I had never tasted monk before but after tasting hers, I would definitely recommend ordering it. The service was prompt and efficient. Can't wait to return.
My husband, my mother-in-law and I had another excellent meal at "The Barge".
What great value! The Greek Stuffed Flounder" entrée is delectable.
Their home made chowders are absolutely delicious. In addition, their
views of the Perth Amboy waterfront are a wonderful bonus.
Wonderful table by the window for views of the bay. Great service by Audrey! Our group of 5 shared the clams oreganata to start..yum! All dinners came with salads with homemade dressing choices. 2 shared the twin lobster special, then swordfish, crab Newburgh and stuffed sole...all good choices. Two tartuffos satisfied all our sweet teeth. Good cocktails and reasonably priced carafes of wine. Love this place!
It was not a good experience at all. We had a 6:00 reservation and didn't get seated until
6:45. It took them 20-30 minutes after we were seated to get bread. And the food was not good. We had both steaks and seafood and none of it was tasty. We had dined there years ago and really enjoyed the food. Was something going on that night that made it such a bad experience?
Mostly very good seafood at reasonable prices. The broiled scallops were cooked perfectly. The au gratin dishes were just OK. The baked clam appetizer was very good, but the lobster cocktail was over cooked & tough. This might just have been a slightly "off" night, because we loved every dish last time we were there. Overall, good value & good. Nice view of the water, too.
While hot and humid, there is nothing as much fun as dining in the patio Friday or Saturday evening..lenjoying the music, the trivia and the view! We started with clams oreganoto, tossed Sakai and coke skaw. Dinners were crab Newburgh and shrimp scampi. Both excellent. A carafe of wine for $22... great bargain as well!
Order taken 20 minutes after being seated, food served 40 minutes later. 3 diners but only 2 meals - I got a hot potato, nothing else despite the order having been confirmed and reconfirmed. Meal arrived 20 minutes later. Ordered a bottle of wine - got one glass.
Apart from that.........................
